Breakthrough: Ricoh more than triples depth of field in industrial cameras

In many cases, one RICOH Extended Depth of Field Camera can capture multiple subjects at different heights and depth in a single shot

MALVERN, Pa., Jan. 7, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Ricoh Americas Corporation today unveiled a breakthrough in machine vision with new digital video cameras that provide up to five times[1] the depth of field of traditional industrial cameras while maintaining brightness.

That means a single RICOH Extended Depth of Field Camera (EDoF) can capture images it typically would take multiple cameras to achieve - subjects in the foreground and background stay in focus without constant movement, refocusing, or shooting multiple images from different heights and depths. Ricoh has extended depth of field by using a specialized lens and a specialized camera with a built-in image processor and a new algorithm.

The innovative RICOH EDoF camera can clearly detect varying subjects in sharp focus - from tiny text to entire assemblies - as products of different sizes and heights glide by on an assembly line at varying distances from the camera. And with the RICOH EDoF camera, the depth of field is extended while maintaining image brightness. With a typical camera, extending depth of field often makes the image darker.

The RICOH EDoF camera is ideal for bottlers, printed circuit board makers, pharmaceutical manufacturers, shippers - any company that needs to inspect product and automatically alert managers to aberrations. The cameras are also ideal in certain low-light situations, such as gem inspections where glare can be a problem. The open aperture required for a dim room would constrict depth of field in a traditional camera.

"With this camera, you'll rarely need to adjust the focus of your industrial camera," said Matt Sakauchi, Vice President, Product Marketing, Ricoh Americas Corporation. "Just about everyone has assumed that depth of field - the range of in-focus distance in front of a lens - is as inviolable as the law of gravity. But our R&D teams discovered that, astonishingly, depth of field can actually be multiplied. Customers can save money, configuration time and the cost of complexity."

MSRP for the VGA monochrome RICOH Extended Depth of Field Camera (EV-G030B1) is $3,707.50; the 2M monochrome model (EV-G200B1) is $4,427.50; and the 2M color model (EV-G200C1) is $4,535.50. Frame rate ranges from 15 to 90 frames per second, and aperture from f/1.7 to f/8.6, depending on the model. The cameras are available with a choice of wide angle (8 mm), standard (12 mm) and telephoto (35 mm) lenses sold separately.
