NI System on Module Helps Engineers Develop Embedded Systems Faster, With Less Risk
The NI sbRIO-9651 System on Module (SOM) offers a complete middleware solution along with an intuitive approach to FPGA programming.
AUSTIN, Texas, July 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- NI (Nasdaq: NATI), the provider of solutions that enable engineers and scientists to solve the world's greatest engineering challenges, today announced the NI SOM. It combines the Xilinx Zynq All Programmable system on a chip (SoC) with supporting components such as memory on a small PCB and features a complete middleware solution and ready-to-go Linux-based real-time operating system (RTOS) already integrated. The NI SOM gives design teams the customizability of a SOM without the increased time and risk of developing custom software.
"We have evaluated several SOMs and embedded SBCs, and there is no comparison to the software integration offered by NI," said Sebastien Boria, R&D mechatronics technology leader at Airbus. "We estimate that our development costs with the NI SOM are a tenth of the costs of alternative approaches because of the productivity gains of NI's approach to system design, in particular to NI Linux Real-Time and LabVIEW FPGA."
The NI SOM enables design teams to deploy reliable, complex embedded systems faster because it is based on and has the same rigorous design standards as the LabVIEW reconfigurable I/O (RIO) architecture. This architecture has already been used in high-reliability applications such as unmanned aerial vehicles and cataract surgery machines.
"Today's embedded monitoring and control applications are more complex than ever before, and tighter deadlines and rising costs only increase stress for system designers," said Jamie Smith, director of embedded systems marketing at NI. "Studies show that design teams using the LabVIEW RIO architecture can solve complex embedded problems in half the time compared with traditional custom design approaches."
Key Benefits
-- Complete Middleware Solution: The NI SOM is shipped with a complete
middleware solution out of the box to remove the time and risk
associated with developing an embedded OS, custom software drivers and
other common software components.
-- LabVIEW FPGA Integration: LabVIEW FPGA eliminates a design team's need
for hardware description language expertise, making powerful FPGA
technology more accessible than ever before.
-- NI Linux Real-Time: The NI SOM offers a robust Linux-based RTOS, which
gives design teams access to an extensive community of applications and
IP.
-- Shorter Prototyping Phase With CompactRIO: Design teams can use
CompactRIO to quickly prototype their applications and then deploy them
with the same code used for prototyping, which saves significant time
and effort.

Jawbone Launches New Weight Management Features For UP
After Steps and Sleep, Jawbone's UP App Now Offers an Easier, Smarter Way to Track Food and Manage Weight
SAN FRANCISCO, July 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Jawbone® today unveiled new weight management features for UP®, the system that helps you manage your weight, sleep better and stay fit.
Jawbone's entirely new food-tracking interface for UP helps you simply log food and water, quickly assess the healthiness of foods, and easily track progress toward your target weight.
The UP Insight Engine(TM) provides intelligent guidance around your food choices, calorie consumption and weight goals, helping you understand how each of those is related to activity and sleep.
"UP and UP24 have inspired millions of people to get engaged in their own health - we've shown that living better really is a universally popular proposition," said Travis Bogard, vice president of product management and strategy at Jawbone. "For the nearly three out of four Americans that are overweight or obese*, living better often includes weight loss. Our new food and weight features for UP, combined with some exciting new food apps we've added to the platform, make UP the most complete solution for weight management and a healthy lifestyle."
Simplified Weight Management
Jawbone's new and intuitive food-tracking interface for UP delivers an easier, smarter way to track what you eat and manage your weight:
-- Personalized Food Library: Quickly see and select from the foods you eat
most frequently, right from the front and center of your food-logging
screen. More than a quarter of meals logged in UP include regularly
consumed items, making easy access to them a time-saving shortcut. UP
also surfaces foods that are commonly paired with the items you're
eating via Jawbone's intelligent food database. Enter eggs, and UP will
show you other items that may be included in your meal, like bacon,
toast, or potatoes.
-- Access to Restaurant Menus: With half of meals in the US eaten outside
of the home**, UP now lists dining establishments nearby based on your
location and lets you quickly log menu items from many restaurants you
visit. Quick access to menus lets you instantly select what you're
eating and automatically import calorie information when available. At
local restaurants where nutrition information may not be on hand, add
nutrition details and UP will save it in your library for future visits.
Jawbone's data science team will aggregate data entered from multiple
users, making it available to the entire UP community for a more
complete restaurant menu database.
-- Food Score: Use UP's food detail screen to quickly evaluate how healthy
a dish is at a glance. UP shows you the breakdown of healthy nutrients
to less healthy nutrients for any given item, along with a new Food
Score to help you quickly asses the overall healthiness of individual
items and full meals. You'll also see a rolling average of the score
throughout your entire day.
-- Weight Goal: Log your weight and set a personal goal in the app to see
your progress toward your target weight. UP will recommend a daily
calorie goal and balance calories burned versus calories consumed to
show you your remaining allowance for the day. And as you log new meals,
a convenient progress meter shows you the number of calories you've
already consumed - and how many you'll be adding with each new item.
-- Insights: A completely redesigned Insight Engine for UP makes its
intelligent guidance and useful health tips even more accessible and
intuitive. Complete with new food-specific insights and opt-in "Today I
Will" commitments, you'll be motivated to try original recipes,
reinforce your diet with fiber and protein, and start building new food
habits to keep you on track.
New Food Apps on the UP Platform
Jawbone teamed up with several meal planning and delivery services to take the UP system a step closer toward the promise of automatic logging and customized meal recommendations:
-- Order a fresh, chef-prepared meal from the daily menu of Munchery, now
in San Francisco and Seattle, and have it delivered that night. When you
connect your Munchery account with UP, each meal ordered will be
automatically entered for you in UP's food-logging system, including
detailed nutrition information.
-- Use HealthyOut to order healthy meals from nearby restaurants
nationwide, at any time.
-- Use the Prep Pad WiFi connected scale from The Orange Chef Co.(TM) to
create recipes that can be automatically logged in UP. Prep Pad can also
factor in your activity from UP to provide more personalized meal
recommendations.
-- Get meal plans and recipes from PlateJoy that are tailored to your
preferences and customized based on your activity and sleep from UP -
complete with ingredients delivered to your home.
-- And coming soon, you'll be able to choose recipe recommendations from
NuMi(TM) by Nutrisystem® that are personalized based on your calorie
goals, lifestyle preferences, and the time of day. UP will automatically
log the recipes you select, and NuMi will use your activity and calorie
information to make even smarter recommendations.
Backed by Industry-Leading Experts
Jawbone's new weight management system and food tracking tools have been backed by leading dietitian Ashley Koff, RD, an international nutrition expert and regular commentator on health and food issues.
"Food journaling is proven to be an effective method for weight management and weight loss, but writing everything you eat down with pen and paper isn't convenient for most people. What Jawbone has developed is a really simple solution to this challenge," said Koff. "While calorie counting is a key part of weight management, the balance of your nutrient intake is equally, if not more, important. It's great to see a simple Food Score - intelligently developed using several nutrient ratios - alongside calorie counts in the UP system to show you at a glance how well-balanced your food is."
Development of the new features has been led by Laura Borel, a product manager at Jawbone and founder and former CEO of Nutrivise, a consumer nutrition company acquired by Jawbone last year. Nutrivise delivered personalized and automated meal recommendations based on a user's unique biometrics and dietary preferences, and was voted "most promising health company" by Stanford Medicine X in 2012.
Available on July 16
UP by Jawbone(TM) 3.2 for iOS is available today as a free download from the App Store. The UP or UP24(TM) wristband is required for the app.

Key to this breakthrough is MediaTek's Response Time Enhancement Technology, which significantly decreases the display's response time and reduces motion blur experienced on 60Hz display by up to 50%, bringing everything on the screen to life with crisp and smooth motion. In addition to the Response Time Enhancement Technology, MediaTek ClearMotion⢠featured in the SoCs ensures full utilization of the 120Hz display with automatic frame rate conversion for content that is standard 24fps and 30fps videos and displays them in 120fps, putting the best and smoothest viewing experience in the hands of consumers around the world. These advancements are a demonstration of MediaTek's commitment to developing high-quality solutions that foster limitless creativity and innovation.
Jeffrey Ju, General Manager of the MediaTek Smartphone Business Unit, said, "MediaTek is proud to pioneer yet another innovative technology in the mobile space. 120Hz mobile displays are not only a pleasure to view and use, but they also ensure mobile users can see every aspect of detailed screen action with the maximum possible fluidity. We're pleased to have partnered with Japan Display to revolutionize the mobile experience for consumers to experience premium technology."

Introducing LeapTV(TM), The First Educational, Active Video Gaming System Designed Just For Kids From LeapFrog
With a library of over 100 educator-approved video games and videos, LeapTV provides video game fun and entertainment designed specifically for young children that is filled with learning and active play.
EMERYVILLE, Calif., July 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- LeapFrog Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE:LF), the leader in children's educational entertainment, today unveiled its first educational, active video gaming system, LeapTV(TM). Just like its no. 1 selling line of LeapPad children's tablets, LeapTV is designed from the ground up specifically for children ages three to eight years old. This innovative new video game console system changes the way children learn by combining activity and movement with best-in-class educational curriculum.
With simple and intuitive user interfaces created with first time players in mind, LeapTV includes a unique transforming gaming controller that has been specifically designed for children's small hands and limited dexterity. In its regular configuration, it enables classic gameplay, but with the simple press of a button it easily transforms into a motion controller and LED pointer controller. The LeapTV system also features a motion-sensing camera that puts a child directly in the game and a unique console design that elegantly integrates into most homes.
LeapTV's extensive Learning Library for 2014 includes more than 100 fun video games and videos all developed or selected by LeapFrog's in-house learning experts.
"It is shocking that less than one percent of the tens of thousands of video game titles are rated appropriate for children under the age of six years. We know that young children want to experience new ways to play through technology earlier than ever, but parents quickly discover that there are very few solutions that are developmentally appropriate or educational for young children," said Dr. Jody Sherman LeVos, director of LeapFrog's Learning Team. "At LeapFrog, we built LeapTV from the ground up to make it the best first video gaming experience for children. From the simple user interface to the innovative controller with a built-in 'hint' button and a world-class Learning Library all designed or approved by our Learning experts, LeapTV gets children's minds and bodies moving while engaging in learning fun."
Three Unique Ways to Play
The LeapTV video game system puts learning in motion with three ways to play: body motion, pointer play and classic control.
-- Body Motion: Children become the star of their own game. The
motion-sensing camera captures a child's moves and instantly puts them
into the game as they explore activities like dance and martial arts.
Children can run, hop and tip-toe or wave their arms to defend goals,
karate-chop fast-moving blocks, scuba dive and more.
-- Pointer Play: Pointer play takes pretend play to new levels of
engagement. The controller transforms into a pointer with a simple twist
and lets kids snap jungle vines, slice through coconuts, swing from
building to building and more.
-- Classic Control: Classic control puts fun at a child's fingertips. They
can press the A and B buttons for fast-paced gaming, or tilt and shake
the controller to sled through an enchanted garden or race in a classic
kart-racing game.
Gaming Just Got Smarter
The LeapTV video game system gets kids into the action while teaching a range of skills across reading, mathematics, science and problem solving. LeapTV provides access to LeapFrog's Learning Library of more than 100 game cartridges, game downloads and videos all designed or approved by LeapFrog's team of gaming and learning experts. Unique to LeapFrog, the Learning Team includes a full-time in-house team of five learning experts, all with PhDs in various specialties including education, child development and educational psychology.
All LeapFrog games draw from 2,600 skills that address the whole child, including reading, math, science and creativity, and seamlessly blend LeapFrog's comprehensive curriculum into age-appropriate gameplay and videos that keep children learning while having fun. With LeapTV, every child can learn and play in a way that is appropriate for them. Select games in the LeapFrog Learning Library adapt to each child's level starting with age or level, and then automatically adjust the learning for just the right challenge.
"At LeapFrog, we strive to offer the best first experiences for children whether through our top-selling family of LeapPad tablets, the recently unveiled LeapBand activity tracker that encourages and rewards children for getting up and active, and now our incredible new educational, active video gaming system, LeapTV," said John Barbour, chief executive officer at LeapFrog. "Our experiences engage, entertain and educate in a unique way where children are having fun while they learn. LeapTV is the perfect example of how we infuse learning through an innovative gaming experience, from exploring math while playing sports to learning how to read while dancing to fun music. In every way, LeapTV has been designed from the ground up, just for children."
The LeapTV system includes console, motion-sensing camera, camera mount, transforming controller with wrist strap, HDMI cable, 16GB of memory and built-in Wi-Fi for downloads apps (sold separately).
Availability
The LeapTV system (MSRP $149.99, for children 3-8 years old) will be available online and at major retail locations holiday 2014. Game cartridges (MSRP $29.99, for children ages 3-8 years old) will be available online and at major retail locations, and downloadable games and apps (starting at MSRP $5.00 and up, for children ages 3-8 years old) will be available via the LeapFrog App Center. Red Lion Launches N-Tron Series Gigabit Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+) Injectors
New 1000-POE+ Delivers Gigabit Speed and Eliminates Need for Separate Power Cables for PoE Devices
YORK, Pa., July 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Red Lion Controls, the global experts in communication, monitoring and control for industrial automation and networking, today announced the addition of the N-Tron series Gigabit 1000-POE+ Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+) injectors to its industrial networking solutions portfolio. Red Lion's new injectors deliver both power and data over a single Ethernet cable to any PoE+ or PoE-enabled device, eliminating the need for additional power cables.
"Factories and other industrial sites need ways to add new technology without disrupting existing networks," said Harry Forbes, senior analyst at ARC Advisory Group. "Industrially hardened products like Red Lion's N-Tron series POE+ injectors allow administrators to easily add new IEEE 802.3at devices and take advantage of Gigabit Ethernet speed, which provides insurance against obsolescence."
The 1000-POE+ is a plug-and-play, unmanaged injector designed to enhance the performance of industrial PoE devices. With a single industrial Gigabit Ethernet port for connectivity to any IEEE 802.3af/at-compliant hardware, the 1000-POE+ is ideal for such applications as security cameras, panel displays and wireless access points in oil and gas, water/wastewater, utility, transportation, mining and factory environments. Providing up to 30 watts of output power and a wider operating temperature than many competitive offerings, the 1000-POE+ injectors enable users to conserve wiring space and cost while ensuring reliable operation in extreme locations.
