Trident and ARM Join Forces to Deliver a Web-Enabled Set-top Box Platform for Next Generation Internet TV Services
New Set-top Box Platform Converges Broadband and Broadcast Capabilities To Deliver On-line VOD and Broadcast Video Services through Web User Interfaces to the TV
SUNNYVALE, Calif. and CAMBRIDGE, United Kingdom, Sept. 10 -- Trident Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:TRID), a leading provider of set-top box and TV semiconductor solutions, and ARM®, announced today at IBC, Amsterdam that they have brought together all the key Web 2.0 and broadcast elements on a powerful set-top box (STB) platform that can enable consumers to seamlessly view TV programming, run rich internet applications, browse websites and share content anytime and anywhere in the home. This new platform not only delivers an immersive and interactive home multimedia experience, but also allows developers and operators to target their content package offering and services to maximise ARPU and advertising revenue.
"By combining an industry-leading STB platform with the powerful Cortex(TM)-A Series of processors, Trident and ARM bring the web-based runtime and user interface technologies traditionally found on PCs and mobile phones into the home entertainment system," said Tony Francesca, senior vice president and general manager of the Trident Set-top Box Business Unit. "We are pleased to be the first to offer this powerful new platform and look forward to continuing to deliver the most advanced multimedia experiences into the home."
"The integration of all the key components to enable a robust, internet media experience at home from the comfort of your sofa is a highly visible demonstration of the growing momentum behind the Cortex-A Series of processors in STBs," said Ian Drew, EVP, Marketing, ARM. "Our leadership position in the development of high-performance, low-power multi-core technology enables ARM to provide the scalable performance demanded by next-generation consumer devices."
This ARM/Trident initiative provides system developers with the most comprehensive platform to create solutions for internet connected STB applications. Trident has optimized its industry-first ARM-based 45nm broadcast integrated SoC family to take advantage of the high-performance ARM Cortex-A9 processor. KPMG is linking with Mickelson, recently named "2010 No. 1 Golfer of the Year" by Golf Magazine, in a unique new campaign that demonstrates how principles of strong leadership can help business leaders cut through the complexity of today's marketplace and achieve their goals.
Through revealing vignettes about his greatest golf moments, Mickelson for the first time shares how leadership attributes like vision, adaptability, passion and persistence have helped him on the professional tour - and why these critical attributes are needed to be a good leader.

In another segment, Mickelson credits focus in telling a behind-the-scenes story about what he calls "the shot of my life" - his decisive "pine straw" shot between the trees on the 13th hole of the 2010 Masters Tournament. "It was a bit of a risky shot. When you have the right focus, you have the confidence in the decisions you make."
Mickelson also provides new perspective on his comeback victory in the 2009 Tour Championship following a rough start, and the vision he had to achieve his miracle shot on the 18th hole to win the 2008 Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.
"Phil's decision-making on and off the course and his inspiring performance in the heat of competition mark him as a true leader and that is why we are proud of our continuing association with him," said John Veihmeyer, Chairman and CEO of KPMG LLP. "KPMG believes true leadership is the critical difference in achieving success in any competition, whether on the golf course or in the business arena."
KPMG leaders are also featured on the new website (http://www.phil.kpmg.com/) discussing how these leadership principles can help companies achieve success. The website is part of KPMG's "Mark of a Leader" advertising campaign, which begins this month during the PGA Tour Playoffs.

The Digital Future Is Now: Tribune, Endemol and RAI Realize Innovation With Microsoft Solutions
Microsoft showcases enhanced portfolio of technologies, including cloud-based services, that create new monetization opportunities for media companies.
AMSTERDAM, Sept. 10 -- This week at the 2010 International Broadcasting Conference (IBC), Sept. 9-14 in Amsterdam, Microsoft Corp. will showcase the latest industry innovations for the media industry with new media solution frameworks, new efficiencies created through use of cloud services and its new Digital Marketing strategy. Microsoft and its partners will showcase solutions at the Microsoft exhibit in the Topaz Lounge, at the RAI Conference Center.
"At Microsoft, we look to turn what is possible into what is real by delivering the next generation of productivity, entertainment and communications experiences across all the screens in our lives," said Gabriele Di Piazza, managing director for the Media & Entertainment business in the Communications Sector at Microsoft. "It's exciting to see how our customers and partners are utilizing Microsoft technologies and solutions to realize innovations for their digital supply chain."
Media Solution Frameworks Shorten Time to Value
Microsoft today announced several companies that have deployed Microsoft products and technologies based on solution frameworks developed for the media and entertainment industry, enabling key business functions, such as digital content management, editorial collaboration, mobile journalism, business intelligence and business partner relationship management.
Companies using Microsoft Solution Framework for Editorial Collaboration include the following:
-- For its 2,400 journalists, The Associated Press (AP) designed a
newsroom system based on Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 and
Microsoft Word 2010 to replace its previous text processing and
content management system. AP journalists and editors will use
Microsoft Word to author content, and will use an editorial system
based on SharePoint Server 2010 to manage resources and share the
content. With this solution, the AP expects to improve productivity,
facilitate newsroom collaboration and simplify software development by
taking advantage of Microsoft's business productivity platform.
-- Gannett Co. Inc., publisher of more than 80 newspapers including USA
Today, is using Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 for its ContentOne
editorial planning portal to improve content development, sharing and
information gathering across its global network.
-- Based on the Microsoft Solution Framework for Editorial Collaboration,
Conciety AG developed the IQon Media Solution Framework, which
provides broadcasters, publishers and news agencies with a platform to
optimize communication and collaboration workflows to enable
end-to-end content production, post production and delivery. Conciety
also developed an application for Windows Phone 7 to enable
journalists to find content and post stories while reporting in the
field.
Produce, Share and Manage Content in One Solution
Media and broadcasters have also turned to Microsoft in order to modernize their digital content management systems by lowering the cost of implementation and achieving better total cost of ownership:
-- Endemol, a worldwide network of entertainment companies, has made it
easier and faster for its employees to access and find media assets
within the company's large catalog by upgrading to the latest version
of Dalet Enterprise, a digital asset management (DAM) system based on
Microsoft .NET Framework and running on Microsoft SQL Server, and
integrating it with Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010.
-- RTVE, the public Spanish radio and television broadcast company, has
also moved its content management systems to Microsoft SQL Server
using the DAM system, designed to facilitate highly efficient and
collaborative workflows for news, sports, program preparation and
archives.
-- DAVID Systems GmbH is unveiling a new solution for radio and TV
stations that provides cloud-based content storage and content
processing services based on Windows Azure, the Microsoft cloud
computing platform, and integrates seamlessly with Microsoft Office
system to support tri-media collaboration between journalists and
editors.
Cloud Services Take the Media Business to New Heights
The cloud is rapidly changing the nature of the computing and IT landscape and is transforming the way Microsoft's media and entertainment partners do business. Microsoft is experiencing strong momentum for the adoption of its Windows Azure platform following last year's customer wins from major industry players, including the Tribune Company and the AP.
Tribune developed its content repository using Windows Azure to dynamically generate newspaper-like layouts based on a reader's selected content quickly. The deployment of Windows Azure for the AP enabled the company to scale up without impacting other operations and to easily and securely make large amounts of internal content available externally.
In addition, during FIFA World Cup 2010, Spanish commercial television channel Telecinco delivered all of the live matches of the Spanish National Team using a full-screen Silverlight player, which allowed viewers to interact through their favorite social networks, based on the Windows Azure platform.
"Microsoft has been key to the great experience that Telecinco has delivered to Spanish Internet users on the live World Cup matches. In what has been probably the largest Internet video broadcast in Spain ever, we took advantage of the elasticity provided by Windows Azure to be able to meet a huge demand on a very well-defined peak without the need of incurring high infrastructure investments," said Jorge Martin Ibarra, development director at Telecinco. "At the same time, the Silverlight player developed by Plain Concepts and the real-time multiple social network integration (Facebook, Twitter and Windows Live all together) defined a very unique and attractive user experience."
Enabling Innovation Through Digital Marketing Strategies
To further address the growing needs of the media and entertainment industry, Microsoft developed a Digital Marketing strategy, which is a new approach to better help companies drive online revenue generation around key industry trends, such as online video, adaptive websites and social media. The strategy focuses on enabling media companies to better monetize their relationships with their audiences.
Through the use of SharePoint Server 2010, FAST, Silverlight and Internet Information Services (IIS) Smooth Streaming, and by utilizing the Microsoft Advertising network and properties, media and entertainment companies have the opportunity to reach the consumer across multiple platforms and channels and to maximize the opportunity to monetize content.
Content owners and broadcasters are looking for full control and flexibility to deliver premium media experiences to consumers across devices, so they can get the content they want, when and how they want it. Silverlight and IIS Media Services are key components in helping partners reach consumers across multiple platforms to monetize their content, offering a complete media delivery platform.
At IBC, Microsoft announced that next month it will release IIS Media Services 4.0, a free add-on for Windows Server, which enables cost-effective media delivery for enterprises and media and entertainment companies. Key new features include sub-two-second low-latency streaming, transmuxing between H.264 file formats and integrated transcoding through Microsoft Expression Encoder 4. Microsoft will also show technology demonstrations of Silverlight Enhanced Movies, surround sound in Silverlight and live 3-D 1080p Internet broadcasting using IIS Smooth Streaming and Silverlight technologies.
For example, during FIFA World Cup 2010, RAI NET, the Internet company of RAI, the Italian public broadcaster, utilized Silverlight Rough Cut Editor and IIS Smooth Streaming to deliver live and on-demand high-definition streaming from the event on its Rai Sport and Rai.tv portals. By using Silverlight Rough Cut Editor, RAI was able to quickly edit the live game and publish for its catch-up TV service.
"Microsoft was the logical partner to help us handle the heavy demand generated during live streaming of the FIFA World Cup 2010, which peaked at more than 1 million unique users and 560,000 concurrent users," said Piero Gaffuri, head of New Media Department, RAI-Radiotelevisione Italiana. "Through the use of Silverlight and IIS Smooth Streaming, fans could watch content on-demand immediately at the end of each live event, including highlights created during the event."
Film Flex is also utilizing this strategy to manage audience experiences, making it easier for consumers to find and enjoy film clips and content.
Founded in 1975, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential.

Envivio Encoder Upgrade First to Unify All Leading IPTV, Mobile and Internet TV Video Formats in a Single Broadcast-Quality Platform
Provides Optimal Quality of Experience, Flexibility and Efficiency to Service Providers and Content Owners to Maximize Success of TV without Boundaries
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Sept. 10 -- Envivio, the leading provider of live and on-demand multi-screen video processing solutions, announced today that a new firmware upgrade for its 4Caster C4 family of Three Screen video encoders brings to market the world's first unified, broadcast-quality, video processing platform with built-in support for all leading IPTV, Mobile and Internet TV video formats. The new 4Caster 2.3 release will be on display for the first time at IBC 2010 in Stand 1.D72.
With the new 4Caster C4 offering, service providers can reduce the complexity and cost of their video headends by using a single encoder to handle all of the pre-processing of a source and then output concurrent, high quality, optimized streams to support any device in their network. Content and TV channel providers can deploy a single encoder to prepare a channel or content stream for simultaneous distribution to multiple service providers and a variety of delivery platforms. In both cases, the upgrade significantly reduces the need for multiple, parallel silos of equipment.
"Everyone is talking about the new multi-screen world, but video headend providers are still offering old-style, single-purpose headends for video processing," said Boris Felts, VP of marketing, Envivio. "With our latest generation 4Caster C4 firmware, Envivio dramatically simplifies planning and development for service providers, broadcasters, and content owners. Not only can they repurpose 4Caster C4 systems for other screens -- a feature Envivio has offered for years -- but each encoder can support multiple screens and adapt to changing services. Regardless of configuration, each screen receives the full benefit of Envivio's proven and patented industry-leading technologies for maximizing video quality."
The new 4Caster C4 firmware provides key enhancements that simplify deployment of Over the Top video services, including a native publishing interface for leading content delivery networks such as Akamai, Level 3 and Limelight, as well as integrated content protection via Playready and HLS encryption with built-in key interfaces for major DRM platforms. Envivio has extended the system's unmatched picture quality with added support for 1080p resolution video for Flash, PIFF and Apple HTTP Live Streaming. Support for alternative audio streams, subtitles, closed captioning and significantly reduced end to end transmission delay as compared to the live event extend the appeal of Over the Top video services by creating a sophisticated experience comparable to DVD and advanced digital services. In stream ad insertion creates new opportunities for revenue development.
All screens benefit from a new generation of video pre-processing tools that improve the quality of source signals and ensure that content is optimized before compression begins. Furthermore, Envivio's new release of its proprietary Extreme encoding technology increases the efficiency and quality of the compression codec, yielding measurable results including a ten percent compression improvement for mobile services.
A new array of video cross-conversion upscaling algorithms uses proprietary Envivio technology to eliminate the need for additional stand-alone hardware. Based on an advanced combination of field structure analysis, motion-adaptive deinterlacing and polyphase resizing filters, the video quality achieved through these Envivio-exclusive enhancements rivals the most expensive SD to HD cross-converters.
Envivio 4Caster version 2.3 for live applications and version 2.5, which will deliver the same feature set for offline file-to-file applications, are presently in Beta testing with key partners worldwide and will be available for deployment in Q4 2010. Xilinx FPGA Development Platform Enables Broadcast Equipment Makers to Meet Real-Time 3D TV Bandwidth and Processing Demands
Spartan-6 FPGA Connectivity Kit and Broadcast Processing Engine IP Simplify Development and Lower Overall Cost of Broadcast Equipment
AMSTERDAM, Sept. 10 -- Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ:XLNX) today announced at the IBC2010 conference a new development platform for engineers working to meet the rapidly growing demand for 3D TV broadcast and other high definition video applications. The Xilinx® Spartan®-6 FPGA Broadcast Connectivity Kit and Broadcast Processing Engine IP core enable broadcast system designers to build full systems for driving the high-speed transmission and real-time processing of video in a full range of professional broadcast applications including cameras, switchers, routers, encoders, monitors and cinema projectors. The low-cost Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) implementation of Triple-rate SDI (SD, HD, 3G) and other interfaces along with real-time video processing gives designers the ability to stay focused on product differentiation throughout the design cycle and into production in the face of constantly evolving standards and demands on performance.
"With the success of 3D movies such as 'Avatar' and the push for ever higher resolution on consumer display devices such as projectors and TVs, a company that decided on an solution that relied on a custom or even off-the-shelf chip approach a year ago would have missed the market completely," said Dean Westman, vice president, Communications Business at Xilinx. "FPGAs allow a fast and flexible product design cycle when combined with the IP, reference designs and other components of the Xilinx design platforms for the broadcast equipment industry, freeing designers to focus on product differentiation and innovation."
FPGAs are increasingly being used over Applications Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) and Application Specific Standard Parts (ASSPs) by broadcast equipment manufacturers due to rapidly emerging standards and competition to meet requirements for video acquisition, contribution across the broadcast infrastructure, distribution to the home, and finally to consumers' 3D and 4Kx2K displays. With sales to the broadcast segment more than doubling year-on-year, Xilinx is experiencing an accelerated uptick in customer demand driven by the industry's realization that programmable chips allow OEMs to quickly update their designs with in-field reconfigurability, reducing time-to-market and overall system costs.
"We saw explosive growth in demand from consumers and broadcasters to move into 3D TV this year in time for the FIFA World Cup," said Marco Lopez, Senior Vice President for Miranda Technologies. "By basing our 3D TV video processor on proven FPGA technology, we were able to meet that demand and ship cutting edge signal processing equipment in time to serve our customers."
Spartan-6 FPGA Broadcast Connectivity Kit
Developed with Xilinx Alliance Program member Tokyo Electron Devices, the new kit is a comprehensive Broadcast Targeted Design Platform supporting the development of systems using the Spartan®-6 family of low-cost FPGAs. By providing triple-rate Serial Digital Interface (SDI), HDMI(TM) (High-Definition Media Interface), DisplayPort, DVI and V-by-One® HS standards, designers can use the kit to evaluate and incorporate into their designs a variety of pre-defined video interfaces used across the professional broadcast market.
Integrating multiple interfaces into a flexible, single chip FPGA design and bridging between the different standards used for uncompressed video and new display technologies allows for a reduced bill-of-materials in the final end system. Xilinx has successfully delivered SDI development platforms over the past decade to dramatically reduce the cost per channel required to bring in uncompressed video, perform video processing and switching, and transmit to video displays or storage. The anticipated widespread adoption of 3D TV will double the bandwidth requirements as compared with 1080p60 formats, thus increasing the number of SDI ports required in each system implementation or increasing the speed of these ports to 6 Gbps and beyond. The Broadcast Connectivity kits will also accommodate the higher speeds required by 3D, Digital Cinema and Ultra HDTV (6G-SDI, 10G-SDI and 12G-SDI) in the future.
"Being able to bridge between all these standards makes for a very useful platform when developing next generation designs," said Yasuo Hatsumi, assistant general manager, PLD Division at Tokyo Electron Devices. "The Spartan-6 FPGA Broadcast Connectivity Kit enables designers and OEMs to quickly evaluate and implement these standards so that they can concentrate on the value-add portions of their designs."
Xilinx Broadcast Processing Engine
The Xilinx Broadcast Processing Engine IP core is being demonstrated for the first time at IBC. Broadcast system designers can use the Broadcast Processing Engine IP core with the Broadcast Connectivity Kit to process video on a single chip. This enables designers to develop the complete video processing chain for many types of video applications. Xilinx has standardized the input and output of each video block so customers can add their own IP, upgrade their IP or mix and match Xilinx video IP using the Xilinx Streaming Video Interface (XSVI). The Xilinx Broadcast Processing Engine supports existing and emerging standards including 3D TV and 4Kx2K Digital Cinema. The Broadcast Processing Engine will support up to 4Kx4K resolution in the video scaler at 12-bit color depth.
Xilinx Broadcast Targeted Design Platforms
Xilinx's newest Broadcast Connectivity Kit and Broadcast Processing Engine IP core are the latest elements of the company's Targeted Design Platform approach toward integrating hardware and software elements needed to quickly build systems and fully verify performance. In addition to kits and FPGAs, these platforms include IP blocks, demonstrations, design environments and reference designs, along with a base set of development boards and industry standard FPGA Mezzanine Cards (FMC).
For broadcast applications, the Targeted Design Platform approach simplifies the development of complete broadcast audio and video interface solutions, including triple rate SDI solutions with support for standard definition TV to 3D TV and beyond in a single programmable device. Building4Media Intelligently Connects XDCAM to Newsroom
FORK and XMPilot(TM) Integration Provide First Metadata-Driven System for Ingest, Production and Archiving
AMSTERDAM, Sept. 10 -- At the IBC 2010 Conference, Building4Media(TM), a leader in advanced broadcast and IT solutions, announced its XMPilot(TM) metadata workflow for Sony XDCAM(TM) camcorders. Building4Media's FORK(TM) Production Suite integrates with XMPilot(TM) to automate the workflow between newsroom control systems and production, ensuring faster and more accurate story ingest, production and archiving.
"The broadcast environment of today demands speed, stability, flexibility and future-proofing," said Warren Arenstein, VP of Business Development for Primestream's Building4Media. "The integration of Sony's XMPilot(TM) and Building4Media's FORK Production Suite means that metadata can now be assigned and followed all the way from acquisition of content, through the production workflow and on into archive."
"Only an open architecture, software-based system like Building4Media's FORK Production Suite can provide this level of flexibility, security, scalability and stability," said Richard Brooking, product manager, Sony Professional Solutions Europe. "FORK's open architecture design and Sony's XDCAM workflows create a seamless news content management system."
XMPilot(TM) Support
XMPilot(TM) from Sony in combination with FORK Production Suite from Building4Media improves the typical news flow by building intelligence into the media. The metadata follows the media from the field to the newsroom, through editorial, playout and archiving.
A newsroom producer begins by creating assigned stories. The story information is passed from the newsroom system to FORK Production Suite and to Sony XDCAM Camcorders via, remote laptops, and smartphones in the field using XMPilot(TM) tools. The journalists then know for what story they are shooting from the information displayed on their mobile devices and in their Camcorders, and the reporters can use their devices to add shot information or other planning metadata to the footage. When the video content is transferred into FORK Production Suite, the clips are automatically put into the correct projects and all the planning metadata are mapped into the FORK database. The stories are linked to their content and can be sorted, searched, and used for intelligent automation and organization. The field metadata can also be used in the editing process using the FORK Proxy Editor or FORK's integration with Apple's Final Cut Pro. The finished clip duration and status is conveyed back to the newsroom system rundown and to playout via the FORK Production Suite's Live Assist module. After being aired, FORK Archive maintains all of the metadata and proxy clips for future access, while allowing high-resolution clips to be stored offline.
About Building4Media:

Building4Media Launches Mobile2Air iPhone Application at IBC
Mobile2Air iPhone app extends FORK Production Suite to the field for News and Sports Broadcasters
AMSTERDAM, Sept. 10 -- At the IBC 2010 Conference, Building4Media, a leader in advanced broadcast and IT solutions, announced Mobile2Air, an Apple iPhone app that seamlessly integrates remote field reporting with Building4Media's FORK(TM) Production Suite, the powerful cross platform (Mac and Windows) production automation software for news and sports reporting.
Mobile2Air enables recording and uploading of videos securely from the iPhone® 3GS and iPhone 4 mobile devices to any broadcast facility equipped with Building4Media's FORK Production Suite. Users can embed content and location metadata and select compression rates for video up to full 720p HD. Mobile2Air also includes a companion app on the iPad® to issue assignments, manage media by shoot location and chat between reporters and producers.
"New devices such as the iPhone are delivering high quality content for mobile reporting," said Claudio Lisman, CEO, Primestream. "Mobile2Air is high performance broadcast software for the iPhone. Mobile2Air extends FORK's powerful end-to-end platform to allow broadcasters to deliver content to viewers almost as quickly as it is recorded in the field. When we acquired Building4Media last year, Primestream's strategy was to extend FORK's powerful platform, which is based on the Macintosh and Windows operating systems. Mobile2Air is the first of many new offerings we will be bringing to the FORK platform."
Mobile2Air and FORK
More than just another iPhone app, Mobile2Air is professional broadcast software that extends your newsroom automation system to the field. Mobile2Air takes videos recorded on the iPhone and passes them over cost-effective 3G and Wi-Fi networks to the FORK Production Suite. Uploaded video content is converted to the house codec on the fly, maintaining all the original metadata, which makes it immediately organized and searchable within FORK. It can then be delivered directly to the FORK "Live Assist" module for immediate on-air playback or to Apple Final Cut Pro® editing software for finishing-quality editing.
Building4Media's proven broadcast IT automation with Final Cut Pro enables a workflow that is easy to set up, manage and use. Each iPhone device is uniquely registered and granted access, which provides security and two-way data communication without the need to download the software from the iTunes Store®. Each app can be custom configured and branded for each client, maintaining a professional level of control by the broadcaster.
MountainWest Sports Network and ANDINA Endorse Mobile2Air
"Primestream and Building4Media have taken an already great product global," said Tom Scholle, operations engineer at MountainWest Sports Network, a Comcast and CBS partnership property. "The MountainWest Sports Network uses FORK and its associated products to ingest, log, playout, manage, and archive the content of all of its live events, studio shows, and original programming. We also worked with Primestream to publish media directly to our website, live and on demand. In the future The MountainWest Sports Network looks forward to working with Primestream on mobile offerings, including the use of Mobile2Air."
ANDINA TV in Peru used Mobile2Air during the FIFA World Cup to bring compelling content to enhance their coverage of the event. According to ANDINA TV, Building4Media's Mobile2Air made this level of reporting, logging and editing more stable and efficient for their team. It also allowed them to save thousands of dollars by leveraging inexpensive and widely available 3G and Wi-Fi networks. In addition, the security features of Mobile2Air ensured that their award-winning content was secure all the way from reporting to editing and distribution.

EU Agency Identifies Incentives & Challenges for Cyber Security Information Sharing in Europe
BRUSSELS and HERAKLION, Greece, September 10, 2010-- The EU 'cyber security' Agency ENISA, i.e. the European Network and
Information Security Agency, launched a new report on barriers to and
incentives for cyber security information sharing. The report shows e.g. that
the economic incentives are much more important for practitioners than what
academic literature indicate.
The importance of information sharing for the Critical Information
Infrastructure Protection -CIIP-is widely acknowledged by policy-makers,
technical and practitioner communities alike. The Agency has researched
peer-to-peer groups, e.g. Information Exchanges (IEs) and Information Sharing
Analysis Centres (ISACs). The report identifies the most important barriers
and incentives in day-to-day practice in IEs and ISACs for CIIP. This
research differs from other reports by being focused on the practitioners'
experiences. The material stems from three sources, literature analysis,
interviews, and a two-round 'Delphi' exercise with security professionals.
Many of the barriers and incentives identified in literature are of low
importance to practitioners and security officials working in IEs. The 'real'
list of incentives for practitioners is instead: economic incentives (i.e.
cost savings), incentives of quality, value, and use of information shared.
Main barriers to sharing information are poor quality information, poor
management, and/or reputational risks.
The Agency has produced 20 recommendations to different target
audiences, e.g.:
- Member States should establish a national information sharing platform
and co-operate with other Member States.
- Private sector should be more transparent in sharing information,
improve preparedness measures based on information exchanged
- Research and Academia should quantify the benefits and costs of
participating in platforms; undertaking case-study research into where
attacks might have been prevented, or their impact lessened.
- The EU Institutions and ENISA should establish a pan European
information sharing platform for Member States and private stakeholders.
The EU Commission's European Public Private Partnership for Resilience
(EP3R)
ciip/impl_activities/ep3r_29_06_2010/index_en.htm) is the main policy
initiative in this area.
The Executive Director of ENISA, Dr Udo Helmbrecht, comments:
"Information sharing is a corner stone to improve the
protection of critical information infrastructure-CIIP, which is vital for
Europe's economy and communications within Europe".

Marvell Supports RVU for 'Whole-Home' TV Entertainment
Demonstrating RVU Client Solution on the ARMADA 1000 HD Media SoC at IBC
AMSTERDAM, Sept. 9 -- International Broadcasters Conference (IBC) -- Marvell (NASDAQ:MRVL), a worldwide leader in integrated silicon solutions, today announced the integration of the RVU protocol onto their ARMADA(TM) SoCs. Marvell, a member in the RVU Alliance, provides CPU and connectivity solutions for multiple entertainment platforms in the "Whole-Home."
The first adoption by Marvell of the open standard RVU protocol begins with the ARMADA 1000 High Definition (HD) Media Processor System-on-a-Chip (SoC). Marvell's low power ARMADA SoCs will be deployed in various consumer video devices including thin client set-top-boxes (STBs) for second and third TVs in the home.
"We are pleased that Marvell has joined a host of other silicon companies powering RVU's vision of enabling consumers to access their entertainment content in a consistent manner on more devices in the home," said Henry Derovanessian, president of the RVU Alliance and senior vice president at DIRECTV. "Inclusion of RVU technology across handsets, tablets and set-top box platforms will accelerate the availability of service provider content throughout the home with a comprehensive Remote User Interface (RUI) that allows for pixel-accurate representation of the user experience rendered by the service operator's media server on thin clients. The RVU technology is at the forefront of the move to advanced in-home video networking solutions and we are glad to see Marvell adopting this pioneering technology."
"The demands for home entertainment are rapidly expanding with 3D, streaming, multi-room TV and personal content consumption and the ARMADA 1000 with RVU protocol enables Pay TV operators to meet and exceed those consumer demands," said Gaurav Shah, General Manager for the Digital Entertainment Business Unit at Marvell. "Bringing the RVU protocol to the low-power and scalable ARMADA 1000 HD media processor opens brand new levels of operator and consumer engagement, rapidly advancing the home entertainment experience."
RVU is a client/server-based technology that allows the television content viewer to experience a consistent server-generated user interface, on various consumer electronics devices. The RVU protocol uses DLNA technology as a foundation.
Marvell's client RVU support is demonstrable today, and will be working with various CE manufacturers on various platforms for production deployment in 2011. Marvell will demonstrate an RVU client solution based on the ARMADA 1000 SoC (88DE3010) at IBC (Hall 9, Booth 131).

The 2nd Annual AllyKatzz Tween Summit will welcome 250 tween girls, ages 8-14, from across the country to NYC. Beginning at 8:00am at The Altman Building in Chelsea, the day will encompass a keynote address that emphasizes the importance of tweens speaking up and taking action, a hands-on "meet & greet" with "A.L.L.Y. Awardees"- inspiring tween/teen girls and boys who started their own non-profits, an Exhibit Hall featuring the event sponsors that make the Summit possible- all offering the girls a rare opportunity to tell companies what they want, a chance to "Speak Up & Share" with the "Listening Panel"- a group of accomplished women from media, entertainment, fashion, sports, and politics who want to know what tweens want, and a chance to spread goodwill through DenimMessaging(TM) - (decorating the interior pockets and waistbands of jeans with words of hope and encouragement that will then be donated to homeless tweens and teens). At 7:30pm, at NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, they'll be treated to a Red Carpet event and the "DM'ing(TM) for Change!" concert featuring teen artists and bands!
To complement the tweens' experience- a day long Parent Track devoted to exploring topics relevant to their daughters is offered- including what girls are thinking, doing, saying (or not saying), and dreaming...
This groundbreaking day will be moderated by tween expert, AK Tweens and AllyKatzz.com founder Denise Restauri along with author, Seventeen Magazine columnist and self-esteem expert Jess Weiner.

KYOCERA ELCO Develops Ultra-Low Profile 5803 Series 0.4mm-Pitch Board-to-Board Connector
Achieving industry's lowest-class stacking height (0.5mm), and smallest depth (2.4mm)
YOKOHAMA, Japan, Sept. 9 -- Kyocera Elco Corporation (Headquarters: Yokohama, Japan; President: Yoji Date) announced today that it has developed the 5803 Series 0.4mm-Pitch Board-to-Board Connector, which achieves the industry's lowest-class stacking height at 0.5mm, and the smallest depth* at 2.4mm. Samples of the new product will be available starting September 9, 2010.
While further miniaturization and multifunctionality have continually been required in consumer electronic equipment such as cell phones, smartphones, digital still cameras(DSC), digital video cameras (DVC), digital audio players and game consoles; in recent years, the number of components incorporated into such equipment has also increased.
Under these conditions, miniaturization of components is also demanded to make effective use of the limited space on boards.
The newly developed 5803 Series has achieved the smallest-class profile in the industry, with a distance between boards of only 0.5mm when the plug and receptacle connectors are mated, and at 2.4mm, has the smallest depth in the industry. These properties allow for further space-saving on boards, as well as its low profile contributes to slim design capabilities.
The 5803 Series increases freedom in designing pattern layouts on the board, because with no contact exposed on the connector bottom with the insulator housing, the circuit insulation between the connector and a board is assured. Furthermore, reliable contact performance is realized with Kyocera Elco's original contact structure which removes foreign matter such as splashes of solder flux in the soldering process and particles inboard splitting.
Kyocera Elco Corporation is contributing to the further miniaturization of consumer electronic equipment with the launch of the new 5803 Series.
* Based on research by Kyocera Elco Corporation; as of September, 2010.

Features:
1. Ultra-low profile board-to-board connector contributes to optimal space saving
Ultra-low profile and space-saving board-to-board connector with 0.4mm-pitch, 0.5mm stacking height, and 2.4mm depth.
2. Good operability
Mating is perceivable with a secure "click-feeling" with structural protrusion on contacts of both plug and receptacle connectors.
A pinching type, that is highly resistant to impact and drop shock, is adopted for the dual-contacting structure. Due to the touch of the contact tip on the inner wall of the insulator housing, mating wobble is restrained and the mating stability improves accordingly.
Reliable contacting is realized with the wiping effect; removing foreign matter such as splashes of flux, particles of boards splitting through increased concentrated load.
5. Increased freedom in pattern layout on boards
No contact exposed on the bottom of both the plug and receptacle connectors enables pattern layout all over a board, thus increasing freedom in pattern layout on boards.
6. Structurally prevents solder-wicking
The insert-molding process prevents the solder wicking on plug connectors, and the nickel barrier on contacts prevents the solder wicking on receptacle connectors.
7. 3,000 connectors contained in reel of embossed tape for automatic mounting machines.
YAWMA Uses Facebook to Launch New Marketplace for Independent Music and Games
New Online Community Revolutionizes Idea Of Social Sharing By Allowing Users To Earn Cash Rewards For Engagement
PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 9 -- YAWMA, an online community and marketplace, launched today. The service allows users to discover, download and share high-quality independently produced digital content through Facebook and earn cash rewards for their participation. YAWMA launched with both independent music and game content.
"YAWMA is grounded in two basic ideas," said Thomas Brooke, CEO and founder. "First, we wanted to bring a high degree of social sharing innovation to the purchasing of music and games. Second, we wanted to reward users for the value they create within a social network."
Here's how it works. YAWMA is a Facebook App that allows users to create social discovery and sharing networks (or YAWMAs) by inviting Facebook friends to join them. The App delivers to users on Facebook one-click access to music and game demos. When a user finds music or a game they like and purchase it, a recommendation is sent to members of their YAWMA. The recommendation also posts through their Facebook news feed with one click access to the music sample or a game demo.
"In today's over-saturated digital stores like iTunes, it is exceedingly difficult to sort through the massive amounts of content and find cool new music and great games," Brooke said. "With YAWMA, we only carry high-quality indie content so social discovery isn't simply further marketing noise about top-20 hits. We elevate this content to the broader market it deserves while providing consumers with the benefit of a simple and fun way to discover great new downloads through Facebook. There is no need to recreate relationships on yet another social network."
YAWMA is designed to form a vibrant community through the overlapping nature of the individual YAWMAs and various features that allow and promote broader interactions. Discovery and sharing is made into a social game as users compete to become the taste-maker, or "The Maven," of product categories. The platform then showcases the community experts who earn this distinction for their engagement (e.g. writing reviews, liking songs, commenting on posts and/or purchasing). Community members can also "follow" each other and share the music or games they have found most interesting.
In addition to social discovery innovation, YAWMA was founded on the belief that users should be rewarded for the value they create within social networks. Brooke explained, "Everyone wants to discuss how to monetize a social network but no one mentions in that discussion the real drivers to value creation within social networks. It's the people and their sharing of meta data with friends."
YAWMA works much like a co-op where a percentage of profits generated through each user's YAWMA is distributed back to the YAWMA members based on criteria including product purchase influencers and total purchases made.
Brooke continued, "We saw an industry that had an abundance of incredible content that was hard to find, users that increasingly relied on online social connectivity in their daily lives, and incredible value being generated by those users through their social interactions, so we created the technology that allowed us to connect all those together into a single business idea."
YAWMA maintains the quality of its content by having industry experts review and approve content added to its library. YAWMA launched with tracks from over 300 bands across all musical genres including pop, rap, indie, electronic, blues, country and World. YAWMA has also partnered with IRIS, one of the premiere aggregators of independent music and expects to offer IRIS-managed content later in September. Plans for YAWMA include expanding into other content areas and integrating with other preferred social media including Twitter.
"We're very excited about partnering with innovative new music services such as YAWMA," said Bryn Boughton, IRIS's Chief Marketing Officer. "We see YAWMA's social discovery engine and co-op business model as a compelling new idea for distributing independent music and look forward to working with them to help people find and enjoy new music."
"We're a very small company but with what we think is a really big idea," said Brooke. "Simplifying social discovery and sharing through integration with preferred social channels makes sense. People are busy so we were not going to expect them to recreate and manage yet another social channel in order to discover and share. And we felt that our social discovery idea makes sense across lots of product categories and not just music. Add to this, a co-op profit sharing for the purchasing that occurs, and you have what we think is a new Web 3.0 retail business model."
YAWMA is an online marketplace that allows you to discover and share indie music and games through Facebook while earning cash rewards for your participation in our community. It's a small company, with a revolutionary idea - that you should benefit from the value you create online.
