Toshiba Rolls Out Reference Design For Control Of Server And Data Center Cooling Fans
Vector Engine-based motor control technology enables power-efficient cloud computing solution
LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW (CES) -Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)*, a committed leader that collaborates with technology companies to create breakthrough designs, today launched its latest reference design for cooling fan motor control. The reference design for servers and data centers fan control is built around the Toshiba TMPM375 microcontroller (MCU) with unique Vector Engine (VE) technology and peripherals to greatly simplify complex motor control designs in high-performance cooling fans and similar products. TAEC will demonstrate the cooling fan reference design this week at CES 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
"The next generation of cloud computing and data centers will require power-efficient cooling fan systems with greatly reduced noise," said Deepak Mithani, senior director, Mixed-Signal Business Unit, System LSI Group at TAEC. "Our cooling fan reference design demonstrates advanced Vector Motor Control methods implemented in a space- and cost-efficient solution, enhancing power efficiency, reducing noise level and improving the overall operating cost of data center systems."
Toshiba's approach to improving motor controls is the implementation of specific hardware accelerators within its MCU products. Its VE technology employs vector control in hardware to aid in handling of complex field-oriented vector control and space-vector modulation methods, greatly reducing system processor loading compared to DSP- or FPGA-based vector control, while delivering highly precise, efficient and quiet motor operations.
Vector Control methodology was long considered cost-prohibitive because of the computational power requirements, software complexity and associated hardware cost. Modern processor and custom accelerator technologies have emerged, enabling affordable solutions to these challenges. Toshiba's offerings in this area include its M370 family of VE MCUs.
The new cooling control reference designs feature various options ranging from low-cost single phase Brushless DC Motor control to high performance Vector Controlled Brushless DC Motor systems that include the following Toshiba products:
-- TMPM375FSDMG - Vector Engine motor control MCU
-- TK7S10N1 - N-Ch 100V/7A power MOSFET
-- TMPM369FDFG - General-purpose 32-bit communications MCU
-- TMP89FM82TDUG - General-purpose 8-bit MCU
-- TB67B008FTG - 25V/3A brushless DC motor drivers
-- TB67Z800FTG - 3-Ch 24V/3A half-bridge drivers for brushless DC motors
-- TB6605FTG - Three-phase brushless DC motor controller
The ARM(®) Cortex(®)-M3 core-based TMPM375FSDMG incorporates an advanced Vector Control hardware design that lowers system cost for field-oriented control. It features a very small SS0P30 package (7.6 mm x 10 mm), reduced component count (as it does not require analog front end), high-speed operation (25ns PWM) and extended temperature range (-40°C to +105°C). Combining the TMPM375FSDMG with the peripheral components and tools in the reference design will accelerate time to market and reduce software development effort for OEMs developing high-performance fans for advanced industrial, space- and mission-critical applications.
Availability
Samples of the new server/data control cooling fan reference design are available now. Mass production will begin later this month.

WILMINGTON, Del., Jan. 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- If you like the idea of creating something from nothing, but don't want any of the annoyances that exist with current 3D printing pens, then Polyes Q1 will be your weapon of choice. Polyes Q1 enables you to draw freely in the air without danger.
Drawing your ideas into a three-dimensional form seemed crazy years ago. The introduction of the 3Doodler changed all that, and plenty of different versions have popped up since then. The only problem with these pens is that they use smelly plastic and dangerously hot elements - just a terrible user experience overall.
Polyes Q1 is a brand new 3D printing pen with light-sensitive photopolymer instead of the traditional ABS/PLA material. When the photopolymer is exposed to the light coming from the pen tip, it solidifies immediately, which makes the drawing process a lot safer and fun.
There are no volatile compounds and nasty smell, which is carcinogenic when inhaled. The pesky power cord has been replaced by an internal battery to make the Polyes Q1 cordless and portable; an integrated button in the pen makes it easy to switch between the drawing modes. A speed control button is also embedded for people to adjust the rate of outflow. Last but not least, it is very easy to replace the ink cartridge within seconds - a simple push of the button, twist and replace.
Polyes Q1 is not only a sleek 3D printing pen, but also a combination of cutting-edge innovation and magnificent engineering. Since the campaign was launched on Kickstarter, Polyes Q1 has got an upsurge on its first day and reached the funding goal of $50,000 within 24 hours. A pledge of $69 will get backers an early bird unit with one pen and three ink cartridges on Kickstarter now.

Toshiba Launches 12-Watt Receiver IC For Fast Wireless Charging Of Tablet Devices
Extending capability to tablet devices intended to speed wireless power technology adoption
LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW (CES) - Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)*, a committed leader that collaborates with technology companies to create breakthrough designs, today introduced its newest IC enabling wireless mobile device charging. The TC7765WBG wireless power receiver controller IC effectively manages the 12-watt power transfer necessary for wireless charging of tablet devices. Compatible with the Qi low-power specification version 1.1 defined by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), the new IC delivers a user experience comparable to that of conventional wired charging for tablets, as well as smartphones and other portable devices. TAEC will demonstrate the new receiver IC this week at CES 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
ABI Research(1) forecasts that the installed base of mobile devices - tablets, smartphones, wearables, notebooks and basic mobile phones - will reach 8 billion by 2019. This will, in turn, create a huge installed base for rechargeable batteries and charging solutions, including wireless solutions enabled by the Toshiba controller IC portfolio.
"While wireless power technology is growing in popularity, broader adoption has been hindered by the lack of a solution with sufficient power to wirelessly charge tablet devices," said Deepak Mithani, senior director of the Mixed Signal Business Unit, System LSI Group at TAEC. "With this addition to our portfolio of wireless charging ICs, Toshiba is taking an active role in driving the industry to clear this hurdle so that it can keep pace with consumer demand."
The TC7765WBG wireless power receiver controller IC is built with Toshiba's mixed-signal process using a high-performance MOSFET design that maximizes power efficiency and thermal performance. The IC combines modulation and control circuitry with a rectifier power pickup, I(2)C interface and circuit protection functions. Compliance with the "Foreign Object Detection" (FOD) aspect of the Qi specification prevents heating of any metal objects in the path of wireless power transfer between the receiver and the transmitter.
The 12W receiver IC is designed in the same size package as Toshiba's 5W wireless power receiver controller TC7763WBG - a compact WCSP-28 2.4mm x 3.67mm x 0.5mm package - further facilitating design-in and contributing to the new chipset's backward compatibility with the lower-power receiver IC. Combining the TC7765WBG with a copper coil, charging IC and peripheral components creates a wireless power receiver. Joining the receiver with a Qi-compliant wireless power transmitter containing a Toshiba wireless power transmitter IC (such as TB6865AFG Enhanced version) forms a complete wireless power charging solution.
Availability
Samples of the TC7765WBG wireless power receiver IC will be available at the end of this month, with mass production set to begin in Q2 2015.

Atmel Introduces Industry Leading Touch Sensing Technology To Revolutionize Innovative Industrial Design
maXTouch U Series Powers Next-Generation Advanced Displays with Exceptional Touch, Moisture and Hover Performance Delivering a True 3-D User Experience
SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Atmel(® )Corporation (NASDAQ: ATML), a global leader in microcontroller and touch technology solutions, today launched its next-generation maXTouch(®) U family, bringing the world's first capacitive touchscreen solution to allow no compromise for designing new state-of-the-art displays. OEMs will no longer have to worry about touch and display performance when selecting thinner stacks such as on-cell, hybrid in-cell, full in-cell touchscreens utilizing very thin film and glass substrates.
The proliferation of smart devices along with the innovation in display technologies have put many new challenging requirements on touchscreen technology. The touchscreens not only have to operate with thin noisier displays, cheaper noisier chargers and numerous environmental noise sources, but also have to work with thick gloves in cold climates, moisture in humid environments and stylus for content creation.
The maXTouch U architecture is designed from the ground-up to service these requirements, enabling the highest hover distance of 25mm while cutting the touch power by 50%. This family provides full in-cell integration without requiring costly display synchronization for the OEM, enabling the fastest touch response for users compared to any competing solution today. maXTouch U series allows multi-finger operation with moisture on the screen and supports side-buttons for an easy-to-use user experience especially in camera mode. The high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) supports very thin 1mm passive and active stylus handwriting with full palm rejection for a flawless content creation experience.
"Competing touch solutions do not have the fundamental building blocks required to support the technical demands of thinner and flexible advanced displays," said Binay Bajaj, Sr. Director of Touch Marketing, Atmel Corporation. "Meeting these technological demands, the new maXTouch U family is truly a testament to the team's innovative engineering techniques. Leading OEMs are extremely excited to use this new architecture to achieve unprecedented touch performance for next-generation products."

G-Technology also announced new Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 all-terrain cases for turning the original G-DRIVE ev, G-DRIVE ev RaW or G-DRIVE ev SSD into a rugged, all-terrain storage solution.
Whether it's the professional photographer on a shoot in Peru, the established executive traveling across the globe with important company files or the young student running across campus to print out their term paper, everyone can use a sturdy and high-functioning portable hard drive. G-Technology's new rugged series is designed to withstand daily wear and tear and even more serious conditions as well, with features like a watertight drive compartment, which floats when dropped in water, and drop-resistance so they hold up to adventures, or accidents, big and small. Like all G-Technology external drives, the new rugged storage solutions come with a three-year limited warranty for even more peace of mind.

"Working closely with G-Technology, I was able to secure a G-DRIVE ev ATC and took it with me to Peru and Hawaii for recent surfing photo shoots. For added flexibility, the removable case is compatible with the Evolution Series(4), easily fitting the G-DRIVE ev or G-DRIVE ev SSD. Perfect for in-the-field-backup, edit, transfer and storage, this durable enclosure leverages a 7,200 RPM-based external hard drive to maximize transfer speed using Thunderbolt or USB 3.0. Manufacturer's suggested retail pricing is $229.95 for 1TB. The G-DRIVE ev ATC with USB 3.0 will be available in February. Manufacturer's suggested retail pricing is $179.95 for 1TB.

The ev ATC with Thunderbolt (MSRP $129.95) and the ev ATC with USB 3.0 (MSRP $79.95) will be available in February.

Tuxera Releases Breakthrough Flash File System for Linux and Android
LAS VEGAS and HELSINKI, Finland, January 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --
Ensures the Longest Flash Memory Lifetime and Highest Performance
Tuxera Inc., the market leader in file systems, streaming and network storage
technologies, today released Tuxera Flash File System for Linux and Android, which is
optimized to run on flash storages such as eMMC and SD. Tuxera Flash File System is based
on Tuxera's widely deployed and robust file system technologies with special flash
optimization and extended features.
Today's smart devices need a reliable, power-efficient, high capacity storage to
support the increasing number of applications that are often run in parallel. Intensive
use through always-on apps, which download and write data around the clock, can wear out
the physical flash memory. This means dramatically reduced device lifetime. Tuxera Flash
File System has been developed with the leading hardware manufacturers to solve these
problems.
"Together with our partners we are working hard on enhancing the products to further
reduce flash memory wearing and extend its lifetime. We are also continuously optimizing
Tuxera's solutions for the highest performance and the best reliability," says Szabolcs
Szakacsits, Tuxera President and CTO. "Durability is especially important in automotive
market, where the system is expected to last over 15 years. That's why Tuxera file systems
already power eMMC and eSD storages in the latest automotive and mobile deployments."
Tuxera Flash File System prevents file system fragmentation on-the-fly without
performance compromises. The file system's design improves the overall responsiveness of
the device ensuring fast boot and mount times, and guarantees data and device integrity
during storage removal and unexpected power-off.
Tuxera's latest file system technologies are demonstrated at the Tuxera Technology
Showcase at CES 2015. The showcase will be held in Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino
[http://westgateresorts.com/las-vegas-resort-and-casino ] from January 6th to the 9th. To

Kidde RemoteLync to Provide 24/7 Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alerts to Homeowners While They're Away
Home-monitoring device works with existing alarms -- no extra fees or products needed
LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- A home fire starts every 70 seconds in the U.S. To offer consumers peace of mind while away from home, Kidde Fire Safety, a global leader in residential fire safety products, on Tuesday introduced RemoteLync at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Ideal for a primary residence, vacation home or rental property, the device plugs into a single outlet, listens for a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm, and uses the home's Wi-Fi to remotely alert the homeowner on iOS and Android compatible phones and tablets. Kidde is a part of UTC Building & Industrial Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
Pew Research Center survey data shows more than half of all adults in the U.S. own a smartphone, and of those, 74 percent have used their mobile device to get help in an emergency. The RemoteLync monitoring solution works with a home's existing alarms and does not require additional products or monthly fees. It uses patented technology to distinguish smoke and carbon monoxide alarms from background noise to reduce the chance of a nuisance alarm. When an alarm triggers the device, RemoteLync communicates via a free app that can be customized to notify an entire network, including neighbors and family, or even call 911 directly.
"Kidde is a leader in using innovation to address real issues regarding fire safety. We believe homeowners want a simpler way to stay engaged with their home when they are away. With a lifespan of 10 years and cost under $100, RemoteLync enables homeowners to know about an emergency for just pennies a day," said Chris Rovenstine, vice president of sales and marketing, Kidde.
Key benefits include:
-- Always On - monitors existing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms 24/7 and
notifies the homeowner via a mobile app, using the existing wireless
connection
-- Device Compatibility - works with iOS and Android smartphones and
tablets
-- Inclusive - designed to work with UL-approved smoke and carbon monoxide
alarms manufactured after 1999
-- Full Home Coverage - covers the average-sized U.S. home with one
RemoteLync
-- Easy to Install - plugs into a single wall outlet with voice prompts and
a user-friendly interface for easy set up
-- Long-Lasting - guaranteed, with a 10-year limited warranty
RemoteLync will be available for preorder at HomeDepot.com in February and nationwide in retail stores in early Q2; the device will cost around $100. Kidde is exhibiting at CES booth 70549, along with United Technologies brands Carrier and Interlogix.
