IBM Provides Clients Superior Alternative to x86-Based Commodity Servers
OpenPOWER-Based Systems Deliver Nearly 20 Percent Better Price/Performance than x86-Based Servers
ARMONK, N.Y., Oct. 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) today introduced a new range of systems capable of handling massive amounts of computational data faster at nearly 20 percent better price/performance(1,2) than comparable Intel Xeon v3 Processor-based systems - providing clients a superior alternative to closed, commodity-based data center servers.
The vastness of Big Data - of the 2.5 quintillion bytes of data generated on the planet every day - provides a challenge for organizations to build powerful technology infrastructures to gain actionable insights from this data. The commodity servers used today by most organizations are built on proprietary processor technology and are increasingly stretched to their limits by workloads related to Big Data, cloud and mobile demands. In contrast, IBM is designing a new data centric approach to systems that leverages the building blocks of the OpenPOWER Foundation. Formed in late 2013, the OpenPOWER Foundation has grown quickly from 5 founders to 59 members - all working together to leverage the IBM POWER processor's open architecture for broad industry innovation.

POWER8 Portfolio Expands
In addition to the GPU-accelerated Power S824L offering, other additions to IBM's POWER8 processor-based Power Systems portfolio and solutions that complement the lineup include:

significantly lower cost basis for deploying NoSQL data stores. The

The new Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi network, owned and operated by 5 Bars, officially went live during last night's Game 1 of the MLB American League Division Series (ALDS), which continues tonight at Angel Stadium.
5 Bars has deployed Ruckus high-capacity Smart Wi-Fi products and technology to give a new generation of fans the best online experience imaginable, and to increase service efficiency for vendors and staff everywhere within the stadium.

Application and Deployment Details
High-density Wi-Fi best practices typically call for a large number of APs that limit media contention and mitigate co-channel interference. The narrow beam and sectorized smart antennas integrated within Ruckus ZoneFlex(TM) access points (APs) are designed to focus RF energy into a specific area, which greatly reduces the opportunity for interference and increases network performance.
5 Bars has deployed over 200 Ruckus ZoneFlex narrow beam (30 degrees) and ZoneFlex sectorized beam (120 degrees) outdoor access points around "the Big A," as well as over 100 high-capacity, three-stream Ruckus ZoneFlex indoor access points, all centrally managed with the Ruckus SmartCell(TM) Gateway (SCG) 200. Fans attending Angels games and spectators of other events held at Angel Stadium, increasingly armed with various mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, are now able to reliably access Wi-Fi service throughout all indoor and outdoor seating areas, and interior stadium concourses.

This includes approximately 150 wireless-enabled, movable cash registers and over two dozen handheld point-of-sale (POS) devices for facilitating in-seat food and beverage services to guests seated on the Club Level, and in the Diamond Club and Dugout Suites. Angels Baseball administrative and operational staff is also using Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi in their business offices located inside the Stadium.

Engineered to Support Ultra High Resolutions at Long Distances
Long distance transport of high resolution DisplayPort signals over copper cables must overcome several challenges, such as insertion loss, differential skew and jitter. Insertion loss is caused by cable capacitance, which acts as a low-pass filter, blocking higher frequency signal components from passing. Skew occurs when the differential DisplayPort signals get delayed and become out of phase as they pass over a long cable. Both factors contribute to increased digital jitter, which degrades the performance of the cable. This jitter becomes more severe with higher resolutions, higher bit rates and longer cable distances. Conventional cables that support lower resolutions at short distances are often unable to support the data rates required by higher resolutions at longer distances. The resulting video can be disrupted by visual artifacts or may not be visible at all.

SUBWAY customers can now easily pay and save at more than 26,000 restaurants nationwide, all from their mobile devices
MILFORD, Conn., Oct. 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The SUBWAY® restaurant chain today announced the nationwide availability of contactless/NFC-based mobile payments in partnership with Softcard(TM), completing a rollout that was announced earlier this month. SUBWAY customers can now use their mobile device to pay at more than 26,000 SUBWAY locations across the U.S. using the Softcard app.
