3D Printing Helps Internet-enabled Wireless Headphone Design Win Award and Recognition
MINNEAPOLIS and REHOVOT, Israel, July 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
Ignitec uses Stratasys 3D printing technology to develop Audiowings, a
luxury, smart headphone that wirelessly connects to user's online music via mobile
networks
Audiowings awarded 'People's Award' in Sir Richard Branson's annual 'Pitch
to Rich' competition
Stratasys Ltd. [http://www.stratasys.com ](Nasdaq: SSYS), a leading global provider of
3D printing and additive manufacturing solutions, today announced that British product
design house, Ignitec [http://ignitec.com ], has designed and manufactured a new
generation of wireless headphones for technology start-up and luxury goods company
Audiowings, using its Stratasys Objet30 Pro
[http://www.stratasys.com/3d-printers/design-series/precision/objet30-pro ] 3D Printer.
Named after the company, Audiowings is a luxury audio headphone that synchronizes
directly with online music services, such as Spotify, enabling users to listen to their
favorite music on-the-go, without the burden of headphone cables. As well as featuring a
built-in storage system, the device also connects wirelessly to the Internet using 3/4G or
WiFi, giving users the ability to plug into YouTube and enjoy music from around the world.
In a bid to receive funding, the first fully 3D printed Audiowings prototype was
entered into Sir Richard Branson's 'Pitch to Rich' 2014 competition. The company has since
been awarded the 'People's Award', receiving a prestigious mentoring program from some of
the world's leading business minds. Audiowings is currently finalizing its plans to enter
the retail market.
"When we were first approached with the concept of Audiowings and briefed on its
prototyping requirements, we instantly knew that 3D printing would be the answer,"
explains Ben Mazur, Director of Ignitec. "Our Stratasys Objet30 Pro 3D Printer was the
obvious choice since it has the ability to produce products on demand that depict the
accuracy and surface quality of injection molding."
Stratasys' PolyJet-based 3D printing technology features 16 micron accuracy, producing
parts that combine high definition with a smooth surface finish, crucial in the
development of high quality prototypes.
"Quality is paramount and is the driving force behind all of our projects," continues
Mazur. "We printed the headphones in a durable rigid opaque grey material (VeroGrey), not
only enabling us to perfect the look and feel, but also perform ergonomic testing with the
user's comfortability- always integral to this development."
Ignitec's move towards Stratasys' PolyJet 3D printing technology aimed to increase the
precision of its prototype parts, as well as reduce its prototyping costs and development
cycle times. Equipped with a Stratasys Objet30 Pro 3D Printer from UK reseller Stanford
Marsh Group, the company has since seen a significant reduction in the time required to 3D
print and hand-finish its prototypes parts.
"Since introducing Stratasys 3D printing into our work flow, we have cut our finishing
time by more than 50% due to the reduction of support material removal required compared
to our previous SLA system," explains Mazur. "We have also seen a surge in client interest
due to the fact that we can now produce prototype parts with a short turnaround time,
while retaining the highest quality and remaining cost effective. Being able to offer
end-use parts prior to manufacturing is something which is very valuable to our clients
and takes away a lot of risk and guess work."
Andy Middleton, Senior Vice President and General Manager EMEA at Stratasys,
concludes: "In today's economy, product designers are under extreme pressure to take
innovation and quickly turn it into a money-making product. Ignitec is a great example of
how our PolyJet 3D printing technology is empowering these designers to deliver first
class prototypes to their clients with the precision and detail of the final product. As
such, product development processes are shortening and fantastic products like Audiowings
are reaching the market faster than ever before."
Stratasys Ltd. (Nasdaq:SSYS), headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. and Rehovot,
Israel, is a leading global provider of 3D printing and additive manufacturing solutions.

Denny's and Atari® Partner to Remix Gaming Favorites
This summer America's Diner puts a modern spin on the classics
SPARTANBURG, S.C., July 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Denny's, America's iconic family diner, and Atari®, one of the world's most recognized publishers and producers of video game entertainment, have joined together to bring back a few classic arcade games, but with some unique twists. Inspired by Denny's new "Greatest Hits Remixed" menu - which features a selection of the diner's iconic dishes all with a new culinary spin - three of Atari's most famous games, Asteroids®, Centipede® and Breakout®, have been remixed as "Hashteroids," "Centipup" and "Take-Out." Beyond just a new name, the games will feature diner elements, such as flying hash browns and syrup bottle shooters. All three games are available on the Denny's mobile app for iPhone and Android devices.
"Our 'Greatest Hits Remixed' menu celebrates a few of Denny's most beloved dishes, by incorporating modern flavors for a fresh, new taste," said Frances Allen, chief brand officer for Denny's. "We're constantly looking to provide a fresh take on tradition for our guests, and this partnership with Atari allows us to extend the fun beyond our menu, and add a new spin on classic gameplay."
Each of the new remixed games incorporates diner items into play:
-- Hashteroids - You're aboard the SS Denny's Condiment Transport ship and
the mission is clear: deliver 40 tons of condiments to the 4(th) planet
in sector 7d.
-- Centipup - Once upon a time, a young boy named Danny came across a
bottle of syrup and with just a slight squeeze the bottle's sticky
contents had the power to turn anyone or anything into a fried egg.
-- Take-out - A wall made entirely of delicious Denny's breakfast items
appears blocking all the take-out orders from their rightful owners. The
only way to feed customers is to break down that wall!
"We are excited to be partnering with Denny's on this partnership. Transforming our classic and beloved games into a retro, remixed promotion will be a natural way to expose our brand to a new generation and resonate with our long-time fans in a fun and unique way," said Fred Chesnais, Chief Executive Officer, Atari, Inc.
The remixed Atari games are just one of several new features available on Denny's recently refreshed "Build Your Own" mobile app, which allows users to build and personalize their app exactly how they like, from their homepage layout to a variety of themes. Interactive elements such as the "Museum of Diner Art" are guaranteed to keep guests entertained, while regular features including the restaurant finder and menus keeps the latest Denny's news at guests' fingertips.

920IP: Low-power, IPv6 Networking for Home Energy Management by ZigBee Alliance
Standard brings benefits of multi-hop mesh networking to ECHONET Lite devices
SAN RAMON, Calif., July 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The ZigBee Alliance, a global ecosystem of organizations creating wireless solutions for use in energy management, commercial and consumer applications, today announced it has completed testing and development of 920IP, an update to ZigBee IP, the first open, global standard for an IPv6 based full wireless mesh networking solution to control low power, low cost devices.
Alliance members have been developing 920IP in response to Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) designation of 920 MHz for use in HEMS and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) endorsement of ECHONET Lite as a smart home standard. The ZigBee Alliance has entered into agreements with Telecommunications Technology Committee (TTC) and ECHONET Consortium to support the development efforts.
"ZigBee Alliance has been leading in the global standardization of M2M communication and home networks," said Yoichi Maeda, CEO and SVP of TTC. "In 2013, TTC signed a MOU with ZigBee Alliance and enacted the TTC standard JJ-300.10 and TTC technical report TR-1043. Now we welcome the completion of global standardization of the 920IP by ZigBee Alliance. Adding this new option may lead wider deployment of energy management solutions and expansion of the market in Japan."
920IP provides specific support for ECHONET Lite and the requirements of Japanese Home Energy Management systems (HEMS). It enhances the IEEE 802.15.4 standard by adding network and security layers and an application framework. It offers a cost-effective and energy-efficient wireless multi-hop mesh network based on standard Internet protocols, such as 6LoWPAN, IPv6, RPL, and UDP. It also supports security and authentication features such TLS-PSK, EAP and PANA and link layer frame security based on the AES-128-CCM algorithm.
"ECHONET Lite is used as a standard of application interface of HEMS in Japan," said Morio Hirahara, representative Director of ECHONET Consortium. "Having IP with 920MHz option by the ZigBee Alliance as one of the recommended protocols for ECHONET Lite, higher interoperability and more wide deployment will be expected."
Development efforts of the updated standard were led by OKI, NEC Engineering, Ad-Sol Nissin, Texas Instruments and Skyley Networks.
"As an organization with expertise in creating standards widely used by consumers and utilities around the world, we are very excited to complete this work that can deliver benefits to consumers in Japan," said Tobin Richardson, President and CEO of the ZigBee Alliance. "Japan holds the second largest number of Alliance member companies and we are fortunate to have expert members leading this important work."
The Alliance will soon announce an extension of the ZigBee Certified program to certify end products for ECHONET Lite devices using 920IP. The program is being developed in cooperation with the ECHONET Consortium and will insure both conformance to the standards and interoperability between products from different manufacturers. ZigBee Certified is a mature testing and certification program that has certified over 900 products from manufacturers around the world.

Japanese Puzzle Game Sensation "LINE: Disney Tsum Tsum" Launches in U.S. & 39 Other Regions
With More Than 14 Million Downloads of the Game App, LINE Aims for Global Expansion Across Its Base of 1 Billion Total Platform Downloads
LOS ANGELES, July 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- LINE Corporation, owner and operator of the free call and messaging app LINE, today announced the release of the English version of its massively popular puzzle game "LINE: Disney Tsum Tsum" (\'soom-soom\) for both Android and iPhone devices in 40 regions worldwide. The title was designed and developed by NHN PlayArt under license from The Walt Disney Company (Japan).
LINE: Disney Tsum Tsum features the popular "Tsum Tsum" (meaning "stack stack") series of stuffed toys based on popular Disney characters. Since the initial Japanese release in late January, millions of players have fallen in love with the simple gameplay concept of connecting 3 or more Tsums to gain points, as well as the game's charming and adorable Disney and Disney/Pixar characters, including Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, Stitch, Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Mike and Sulley. To date the app has surpassed 14 million downloads in Japan alone, achieving the top spot in both the Apple App Store and Google Play's free app ranking. The influence of the app's popularity has extended offline with sales of Tsum Tsum stuffed toys surging 40 percent, pushing them into second place in the Games, Toys and Stationary category of Nikkei Trendy's "First Half of 2014 Product Popularity Rankings".
Spurred by the success in Japan, the English version of LINE: Disney Tsum Tsum was released globally with a focus on western markets, such as the U.S., as well as East Asian markets. By offering the game on the LINE platform with more than 1 billion downloads worldwide, LINE aims to leverage this massive user base and momentum to achieve further growth on a global scale.
"According to the latest trends, the global gaming industry is rapidly expanding beyond traditional console games to cross-platform mobile games" says Jeanie Han, CEO of LINE Euro-Americas Corporation. "With the success of LINE's gaming platform, we are looking to reach the growing casual gaming communities in the U.S. and partnering with well-known brands and IP's has significant global revenue potential."
The simple gameplay consists of matching and eliminating the highest possible amount of sets of three or more of the same Tsum within one minute. The final number of eliminated Tsums determines the final score. By eliminating five or more Tsums, players earn coins that can be used to purchase items, while eliminating seven or more grants the "Magical Bubble" item, which can be used to eliminate multiple Tsums at once.
Players can select from one of 29 different characters to be their "My Tsum", power up their character by eliminating other Tsums of the same type and gain special abilities, such as stopping time or eliminating all the Tsums at the center of the screen at once.
By linking the app with LINE, adult players can compete with their friends in the rankings or send and receive Hearts, which are required to play the game.
To celebrate the launch, exciting events are being planned for the U.S. market in addition to events hosted in cooperation with the Disney Store, which sells stuffed toys from the Tsum Tsum series. Localization of the app into Thai and Traditional Chinese is also being planned.

Driving Awareness of Vital Health and Safety Practices
LONDON, July 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
It's quite worrying that in some organisations, the only way employees get any health
and safety education is from a dog-eared poster in a corridor.
In this era of digital and mobile, where company newsletters can be delivered in
seconds and staff work on projects across multiple sites, such digital convenience should
be applied to health and safety. After all, huge fines, significant punishments and
negative publicity are the consequences for firms falling afoul of regulation. In many
cases, it's literally a life-or-death issue.
Applying the advantages of social computing to safety regulations helps keep everyone
informed, no matter where they are. It's a far more satisfying step, compared to citing
the legal small print in office meetings.
It's the ideal platform, as regulations typically get updated every few months.
Workers stay on top of changes, regardless of their demographic or location. It's this
speedy response that's driving companies to look at IBM's social business solutions.
The two major benefits for business are that the risks of accidents are heavily
reduced and that every employee is able to be educated on full procedures in a manner that
suits them. Companies can cut or minimise project execution delays arising from potential
or actual safety issues.
In this transition to strengthen health and safety through the use of technology, the
convenience of mobile devices can't be underestimated. Health and safety specialist Martin
Stear has observed how these digital companions help out in various sites; "Tablets are
now used extensively for some areas of health and safety".
Social analytics can be applied to sites, predicting the likelihood of incidents.
Communications tools can give employees on-the-spot expertise for rapid decision-making.
By cutting the number of accidents, productivity levels are increased by having fewer
absent employees.
"We have the technology for people who have issues in safety areas, where they want to
improve processes, feedback, safety documentation, incident handling in a more open way,
and with the ability to get feedback earlier," says Alan Hamilton, social business value
and adoption consultant, and evangelist at IBM.
"We are demonstrating how creating a social business can help in these areas."
By embracing IBM's collaborative technology, you have a platform accessible to
employees, ready to reach those on site, working from home or outside of the office.

IBM's Bluemix Now Generally Available - Significant Momentum Since Open Beta
- Bluemix Now One of the Largest Cloud Foundry Deployments
- IBM and Business Partners Launch Range of New Bluemix Services; New Clients include GameStop
- Leading Systems Integrators IBM GBS and CSC Deploy Bluemix
ARMONK, N.Y., June 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that Bluemix, the company's open cloud development platform, is now generally available with new services, clients and systems integrators using it to rapidly develop applications in the cloud.
Bluemix, available on the IBM Cloud Marketplace, now includes more than 50 services for building secure, cloud-based business applications. Its rapid adoption during its open beta period, which began in February, makes Bluemix one of the largest Cloud Foundry deployments in the world in just a few months.
"Organizations are rapidly moving new, innovative apps to Cloud Foundry's scalable, user-friendly model," said James Watters, vice president of Cloud Foundry Product and Ecosystem at Pivotal. "IBM Bluemix furthers the Cloud Foundry vision for rapid app development, as well as the ability for developers to work easily between platforms and tools from multiple providers."
Bluemix runs on the SoftLayer infrastructure and combines the strength of IBM's middleware software with other open services and tools from IBM partners and its developer ecosystem to offer DevOps in the cloud - an open, agile development model scalable from one-person startups to large enterprises. The growing catalog includes tools in categories such as Big Data, social, mobile, security, and the Internet of Things, and for industries ranging from mobile commerce, academia, advertising, and emerging spaces such as wearables.
New Bluemix Services from IBM and Business Partners
IBM continues to deploy more of its own technology onto Bluemix. For example, IBM's MQ Light messaging service is now available on Bluemix and IBM's Cloud Marketplace to help developers quickly and easily connect different components of an application together in the cloud - regardless of programming language. IBM also deployed Gamification services to Bluemix to help create new systems of engagement for cloud applications across a range of industries, which offer game-like incentives.
New business partner services being added to Bluemix and the IBM Cloud Marketplace include Redis Cloud to help developers use the cloud to rapidly access huge volumes of data and run their Redis datasets. Bluemix users will now be able to connect to Redis using the powerful and global IBM SoftLayer cloud - helping to improve both the scalability and availability of the data they need to build cloud applications.
Other new business partner services include those from Sonian, adding to an array of solutions to help developers organize and mine Big Data. Sonian's flagship service, Email Archive, helps users better capitalize on the vast amounts of data generated from email, attachments and other intellectual property. Another new Bluemix service from ClearChat enables users to develop and test for multiple mobile platforms such as iOS and Android. ClearChat's mobile services provide common channels for users of an application to communicate - regardless of platform or device.
GameStop Developing New Cloud App with Bluemix
Today, it is estimated that nearly 60 percent of developers are building for the cloud, according to Evans Data. Using Bluemix, developers are creating new mobile applications that integrate and extend into companies' existing IT infrastructure. This includes GameStop, which plans to use Bluemix to develop a new mobile app to combine its in-store and online shopping experience for customers.
"Working with the Bluemix platform, we are prototyping new ways to engage with our players from the online to the in-store experience," said Jeff Donaldson, senior vice president of GameStop's Technology Institute. "Being able to add loyalty functionality as well as rapidly test, retool and deploy our mobile apps on Bluemix is giving us a competitive advantage in a market where speed means everything."
Leading Systems Integrators Adopt Bluemix
IBM also announced that in addition to its Global Business Services organization, which has trained more than 80,000 consultants on Bluemix to help clients rapidly deliver mobile and web applications, other leading systems integrators, including Computer Sciences Corporation, are also using Bluemix to help their clients design and deploy cloud strategies.
"Bluemix represents the next step in the transformation of IBM's cloud offering. One of the most important factors is the breadth of technology IBM can offer when it comes to cloud, coupled with clear intention to ensure its different product groups work together more closely than ever before," said Gary Barrett, Principal Software Analyst at Ovum Research. "If IBM continues to enhance the platform and can bring on enough partners, Bluemix could transform the Platform-as-a-Service market."
About IBM Bluemix
Announced as part of IBM's $1 billion investment in cloud computing, Bluemix addresses a growing demand to more easily build cloud-based, creative mobile and web applications - without having to spend large amounts of time and resources on configuring infrastructure and multiple software licenses. Bluemix, built on Cloud Foundry's open technology, enables business to rapidly adjust to customer needs by allowing developers to mix and match different interoperable app services and tools. Powered by SoftLayer's robust cloud infrastructure, Bluemix - unlike similar platforms - offers developers the cloud power they need to build without ever having to configure infrastructure. AUSTIN, Texas, June 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Samsung Electronics Australia and Community Telco Australia, the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank telecommunication subsidiary, just launched their own retail POS mobile payment solution called 'redy'. Customers can make payments using their mobile device by simply scanning a QR code in the 'redy' application.
The app is available in Australia to anyone who uses a compatible smartphone. It can be linked to a Bendigo Bank savings account, or to any Visa or Mastercard account. No customer information or shopping data is passed onto the merchant for security purposes.
Every transaction with 'redy' is displayed on a dedicated Samsung Galaxy tablet at the point of sale. The Samsung tablet is securely displayed at every location by the HoverTab, the specially designed Compulocks Galaxy Tablet POS solution.
Compulocks was petitioned by Samsung and Community Telco to create a secure display solution specifically for their Samsung 'redy' tablets. They wanted a tablet POS solution that was equally secure, stationary yet flexible, affordable and lightweight. It was important for them that their employees have the option of carrying the tablet around the store, but can also easily and securely station it as a tablet display next to the cashier. The aesthetically pleasing HoverTab was created for this project.
Community Telco's Mobility Manager Rick van Emmerik said "The HoverTab displays look great and we're all really happy with the end product." HoverTab, chosen as 'redy's' Galaxy Tablet POS, is an innovative product built using all of the best design features from Compulocks top-selling stands and locks. It is a universal tablet POS stand for any tablet or smartphone.
The HoverTab is a two part solution, the first being an adhesive steel plate that connects to the back of the Galaxy Tab or smartphone. The second is the six inch high stand, sloped at a 60 degree angle for optimal viewing and comfort.
Over 1000 units of the Galaxy HoverTab are now deployed throughout Australia in every location that 'redy' is used. The service is currently being expanded throughout Australia. Samsung Australia's Enterprise Team said "Thanks for your help Compulocks! The HoverTab design came together nicely for Bendigo Bank and Community Telco. Good job!" Compulocks can custom design any product to your company's needs. The Galaxy HoverTab is available at http://www.galaxyenclosures.com and http://www.compulocks.com.
LusoVU presents its new product, EyeSpeak, which will literally allow its users to
talk with their eyes. The system is based on Epson's BT200 smart glasses on which a
microcamera, a microphone and a speaker will be integrated. All these will be controlled
by a microprocessor unit that will monitor the user's eyes position. To reduce latency the
eye tracking algorithms will be embedded on the systems firmware. With the augmented
keyboard shown in the user's field of view and the eye tracking routines, the users will
be able to write words or sentences and have them spoken by a synthetic voice through the
systems speaker. This device was designed specifically for people who have disabilities
affecting their communication and motor abilities such amyotrophic lateral sclerosis,
muscular dystrophy, locked in syndrome, spinal cord injuries, tetraplegia, and some cases
of traumatic brain injuries.
EyeSpeak's story is also inspirational: the idea behind the device appeared after the
company's CEO, Ivo Vieira, became aware of the fact that his father was diagnosed with
ALS. After the initial impact he decided he would transform this tragic event into
something meaningful. He realized his team's deep knowledge of technology could change for
the better the lives of thousands of persons throughout the world. This is a huge drive
and this is why LusoVU is totally committed to make this development come to fruition.
LusoVU launched a Kickstarter campaign between 16th June and 16th July 2014 to gather
the necessary funds to make the product available within approximately 6 months. In case
the campaign's goal is not reached LusoVU is still committed to develop the device but it
will surely take much longer for the product to be available in the market and therefore
reach the people that are eager to have it. And time is of essence for people with some of
these diseases. The campaign is also an excellent opportunity to acquire the device at
much lower prices than it will be commercialized at a later stage.
"... LusoVU's project to enable eye controlled communication via a wearable device
will make a dramatic difference in my daily life...I hope that you will consider
supporting this very important project that can help people like me and others with
similar paralysis live better lives and communicate freely without bounds again." Francis

San Francisco and San Jose Create the First Large-Scale Municipal Hotspot 2.0 Service with Ruckus Wireless and Global Reach
Landmark Effort Gives Millions of Bay Area Residents and Visitors Secure, Automatic Connections and Seamless Connectivity with San Francisco and San Jose Free Wi-Fi Services
SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Ruckus Wireless, Inc., (NYSE: RKUS) today announced a major initiative with the City and County of San Francisco, the City of San Jose, CA and Global Reach Technology to create the first large-scale municipal Hotspot 2.0 service that allows millions of visitors and residents to automatically and securely connect to and seamlessly roam using San Jose and San Francisco free Wi-Fi services. The new Hotspot 2.0 service is now live and operational.
An innovative approach to providing public Wi-Fi access, Hotspot 2.0 is a new technology specification developed by members of the Wi-Fi Alliance (WFA) that radically simplifies and automates how users securely connect to and roam between Wi-Fi networks without requiring users to manually select a network or sign-on.
Leveraging new Hotspot 2.0 technology, users in San Francisco and San Jose now can enjoy seamless and secure Wi-Fi data connectivity that mirrors today's cellular experience, with the added benefit of working on Wi-Fi-only devices such as tablets and laptops. The initial Bay Area Wi-Fi Hotspot 2.0 deployment supports Hotspot 2.0 enabled iOS 7 devices (iPhone 5/5s/5c, iPad 3, iPad Mini, iPad Air, iPad Mini Retina, and iPod Touch 5th Gen) as well as Apple laptops running OS X Mavericks.
"With the adoption of Hotspot 2.0, we are literally transforming the user Wi-Fi experience," said Vijay Sammeta, Chief Information Officer for the City of San Jose. "Hotspot 2.0 makes our infrastructure smarter by eliminating tedious and cumbersome device configuration. Now people can securely connect to and roam using our networks in a transparent fashion. Things don't get much easier."
"People want their devices to automatically connect to trusted Wi-Fi networks whenever they are in range, and to use strong encryption as well," said Marc Touitou, Chief Information Officer for the City of San Francisco. "This is precisely what we have achieved."
"With unprecedented cooperation, we have developed the world's largest municipal deployment of Hotspot 2.0 technology that is open to the public and available to anyone with a supported device," added Flavio Aggio, Chief Technology Officer for the Department of Technology of the City of San Francisco. "With this Hotspot 2.0 network in place, we expect more and more peering with other network and authentication providers which will allow us to realize our collective vision for global Wi-Fi roaming."
Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi equipment, which has been Passpoint(TM) Certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance, is being used to power the new Hotspot 2.0 service across both the San Jose and San Francisco Wi-Fi networks. Simple device provisioning and unified authentication services are being provided through a cloud-based system operated by Global Reach, a Ruckus technology partner.
The Global Reach software platform includes the AAA servers (Authentication, Authorization and Accounting), Hotspot 2.0 device detection, and landing pages with the Hotspot 2.0 token. The Hotspot 2.0 provisioning feature, developed by Global Reach, configures devices with an 'anonymous' credential which is used to automatically connect to any network honoring the credential and is also a component in the process used to generate the encryption keys for the secure connection.
Users simply click to connect securely. Global Reach then provides each user device with a one-time provisioning file that automatically configures the requisite Wi-Fi settings and encryption without any human intervention. Once a guest registers and is provisioned with the Hotspot 2.0 credential, they can automatically and securely connect to either of the cities' WLAN infrastructures whenever they are in range.
Making Public Wi-Fi Simpler and Safer to Use
Historically, to connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot, users have had to perform the arduous task of manually selecting from a number of Wi-Fi networks that may or may not be able to provide them service, and then perform the tedious process of navigating through a 'portal' page before having access to their services.
Using Hotspot 2.0, information advertised by Smart Wi-Fi infrastructure tells devices how to automatically connect to the Wi-Fi network if they possess a credential accepted at that hotspot. The credential itself can be a SIM card, a security certificate, or a username and password that Wi-Fi operators agree to accept for authenticating users on their networks.
Hotspot 2.0-capable devices automatically and securely join a Wi-Fi Hotspot 2.0 service whenever the user enters the service area. Using Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Passpoint devices, Hotspot 2.0 also enables seamless roaming between Wi-Fi networks that share roaming agreements.
According to San Jose and the City of San Francisco, the new Hotspot 2.0 service may also be made open to other organizations looking to establish Wi-Fi roaming agreements with either or both cities.
The new Hotspot 2.0 infrastructure gives users the option to register for the free Hotspot 2.0 service if they choose, or if they decline, the ability to stay on the existing, unencrypted service.
To ensure complete user privacy, the two cities are using anonymous credentials. Each user who elects to use the Hotspot 2.0 service for either Wi-Fi network is issued a credential without having to provide any information such as an email address or name.
