The integration of Android Auto(TM) promises to add yet another dimension to the Volvo
in-car experience. Android Auto brings features and services familiar to Android
smartphone and tablet users directly into the car via Volvo Cars' large centre console
touch screen display.

Volvo Cars' portrait touch screen provides users with the benefit of having both Volvo
Cars and Android Auto content on the screen simultaneously, removing the need to switch
between car and Android phone screens.

It can even determine when the wearer is walking up/down stairs, on a bicycle, or riding in a train or car.
Most wearable devices on the market are designed to perform simple activity monitoring, such as counting steps or estimating calories burned, and offer very few points of differentiation. Key Functions
1) Activity monitoring

In addition, users can set a daily target for calorie consumption and the device will provide real-time display of calories burned and even deliver alerts and show recommended exercises to meet calorie goals.
2) Gesture control
Lock and unlock compatible tablets and smartphones by holding the key device and simply drawing a 'U' or 'L' in the air, providing greater convenience and peace of mind.
3) UV measurement
Attach the device externally around the neck or attached to a belt to measure the amount of UV radiation in order to prevent sunburn or excessive exposure.
4) Distance measurement
Point the key at the top of a well-known (preloaded) metropolitan landmark or building in order to instantly obtain the distance and approximate walking time.
5) Metal detection
Detect small foreign metal objects in food using the built-in high-sensitivity MI sensor - simply point the device at the food to obtain a reading.

Aimed primarily at the consumer market, AirDog is an innovative, yet simple-to-use,
'quad-copter' that operates via a wrist-worn tracking device and accommodates a standard
GoPro sports camera. Users can automatically capture exciting live aerial video footage
and still photography of themselves, having set distance, speed and height levels for
AirDog to follow. Helico is specifically targeting the outdoor 'extreme' sports market and
expects AirDog to be of particular interest to recreational participants of freestyle BMX,
motocross and skateboarding, as well as water-sports such as surfing, kite-surfing and
wake-boarding.

The Power of 3D printing
Prior to investigating the use of 3D printed parts, Rozentals was trying
silicon-molded designs through a supplier in China. However, not only did this entail a
two-week turnaround time, but the resulting models proved to be too heavy for take-off and
were ultimately scrapped.
"The benefits delivered by 3D printing compared to the method we trialled originally
are numerous", says Rozentals. "Above all, turnaround time is significantly reduced and if
we need to make last minute changes to a design, we can do so within a matter of hours,
easily and cost-effectively. This was simply unachievable before as it necessitated
time-consuming production of a costly new mold.
"In fact, I'm not sure how we would have arrived at the stage of having a functional
part, were it not for Stratasys 3D printing technology. I founded the company two years
ago and we're a staff of three, so for start-ups like Helico, this technology isn't just a
game-changer, but the ticket to the game itself," he explains.
Getting AirDog Off the Ground with 3D Printing
According to Rozentals, AirDog might literally have not got off the ground, had it not
been for the instrumental role 3D printing played during the prototyping phase. The
company sought the expertise of Stratasys' Latvian partner, Baltic3D, who also worked with
Polish reseller Bibus Menos to meet the requirements outlined by Helico's team. In order
to produce fully-functional parts that could perform in the real environment, both
Stratasys' FDM and PolyJet 3D printing technologies were employed for AirDog and its
AirLeash tracking device, respectively.
The final AirDog drone was fully 3D printed using Stratasys' FDM-based ULTEM material,
chosen thanks to its ability to provide parts of extreme strength and durability, with the
lightweight characteristics vital for take-off and in-flight manoeuvrability. "We were
particularly impressed by how far we could push the boundaries of the ULTEM material,"
adds Rozentals. "The material's functional stability enabled us to print very thin walls
that further reduced AirDog's overall weight."
Conversely, the accompanying AirLeash was developed using Stratasys' PolyJet
multi-material 3D printing technology. 3D printed in a single pass, the wrist-worn device
combines rigid and rubber-like materials to produce everything from the robust housing
case to the soft buttons on the keypad.
"Airdog is a perfect example of how 3D printing is an enabler for inventors looking to
turn their ideas into fully-operational parts quickly and effectively," says Andy
Middleton, Senior Vice President and General Manager EMEA at Stratasys. "In this case,
both our core 3D printing technologies have proved instrumental in producing a
fully-functional drone and wrist device. With the exception of the advanced sensor
technology, both parts have been created entirely using 3D printing."
A Stratasys 3D printed version of AirDog will preview this month, as Helico executives
begin a month-long promotional roadshow in the US to generate interest among end-users
within the extreme sports scene. If successful, and pending contractual agreements with
relevant manufacturers, Helico expects to commercially introduce AirDog to the market at
the end of October, 2014.

Microchip Releases the RN4020 Bluetooth(R) Smart Module
Integrates a Bluetooth 4.1 Low Energy stack for use with or without a host MCU

The RN4020 builds on the Company's deep Bluetooth Classic experience and carries both worldwide regulatory certifications and is Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) certified. The integrated Bluetooth Low Energy (BTLE) stack and onboard support for the common SIG low-energy profiles speeds time to market while ensuring Bluetooth compatibility, eliminating expensive certification costs and reducing development risks. The module is also pre-loaded with the Microchip Low-energy Data Profile (MLDP), which enables designers to easily stream any type of data across the BTLE link.
Because the RN4020 is a stack-on-board module, it can connect to any microcontroller with a UART interface, including hundreds of PIC(R) MCUs, or it can operate standalone without an MCU for basic data collection and communication, such as a beacon or sensor. This standalone operation is facilitated by Microchip's unique no-compile scripting, which allows module configuration via a simple ASCII command interface -- no tools or compiling are required.
The designers of cost-sensitive embedded applications are looking for turnkey solutions that make it easy to add the low power consumption and simplicity of Bluetooth LE connectivity, which enables several years of operation from a single battery and has a large installed base of compliant smartphones, tablets and computers. Example markets that need these low-power wireless command-and-control solutions include home automation and appliances; medical and wearable devices; toys, tags, fobs and remote controls; pulse and proximity sensor-based systems; and even industrial applications.
Microchip's RN4020 Bluetooth LE Smart module includes all of the hardware, software and certifications that designers need to easily add this low-energy connectivity to any design, while easing End Product Listing (EPL) via QDID Bluetooth compatibility testing. All of the programmable profiles are stored and selectable on the module, including Microchip's flexible MLDP and the common Bluetooth SIG low-energy profiles. In addition to common public profiles, private services can be created via the ASCII command interface. The RN4020 also provides a built-in PCB antenna with 7 dBm transmit power and a receive sensitivity of -92.5 dBm, enabling operation over 100 meters* in a compact form factor of only 11.5 x 19.5 x 2.5 millimeters.

This board enables code development via USB interface to a PC, and over the onboard In-Circuit Serial Programming(TM) interface for Microchip's PICkit(TM) or MPLAB(R) REAL ICE(TM) tools. It also leverages customer investments in Microchip's existing development boards with a PICtail interface, such as the Explorer 16, PIC18 Explorer and PIC32 I/O Expansion Board. Additionally, the onboard eXtreme Low Power (XLP) PIC18 microcontroller allows the PICtail board to run in standalone mode, powered by USB from the host, enabling portable demonstrations and proofs of concept.

Radon Guard(TM) Receives Canadian Construction Materials Centre Building Code Approval

New laser line sensors improve productivity, enable reverse engineering
MAPLE GROVE, Minn., June 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- ZEISS Industrial Metrology today announced the new family of LineScan laser line sensors that improve inspection productivity and enable reverse engineering of complex products on popular CONTURA, ACCURA II and PRISMO CMMs. The new LineScan sensors easily extend the functionality of your ZEISS CMM and are available with stripe widths of 25 mm, 50 mm and 100 mm.
Inspection productivity is improved by scanning workpieces at rates of up 700,000 points/second, with a measurement precision figure of merit (MPE(PF) as defined by ISO-10360-2) as low as 12 um, and storing point cloud information in the CMM host computer. With resolution of 1280 points/line and no need for an extra controller, the new LineScan sensors utilize a 658 nm wavelength visible red light source. Each unit is IP54 certified to protect from dust and water.
The new LineScan sensors are immediately available with the new ZEISS CONTURA, ACCURA II and PRISMO CMMs using the ZEISS RDS probe system and CALYPSO 2014 software. These sensors can also be retrofit to select ZEISS CMMs in the field.
Applications include inspection of car bodies, tools for molds, construction and design tools, as well as reverse engineering of contact-sensitive or finely structured surfaces. Reverse engineering is the process for creating a 3D computer model from a solid object so that additional prototypes can then be made from the model.
