Holland Haptics launches Kickstarter campaign for device that allows you to hold hands with your loved ones, wherever they are
SAN FRANCISCO, June 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Holland Haptics, a technology firm headquartered in the Netherlands, today announced the launch of its Kickstarter campaign for Frebble, a device that enables users to hold hands with a loved one, no matter the distance between them.
Frebble uses tactile feedback, described as "doing for the sense of touch what computer graphics does for vision," says Frederic Petrignani, CEO of Holland Haptics. "Video calling has made the world a whole lot smaller, and now Frebble is here to add a new dimension to communicating over the Internet, by helping people connect in a tangible way."
Frebble has proven extremely popular with children from 5-12 years old. It is an excellent way for parents and grandparents who live far away or must travel frequently to literally keep in touch with the children in their lives - providing that love, support and interaction so essential to healthy development.
When the ergonomically-designed Frebble is squeezed, a corresponding Frebble held in a loved one's hand will gently apply pressure to the back of the hand, simulating what the user would feel if he or she were holding hands with someone next to them.
The company is seeking $50,000 in funding through Kickstarter to fund the initial production run. For a $99 pledge, backers will receive a set of two Frebbles. For more information, visit the Frebble Kickstarter page at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/396691740/frebble-hold-hands-online.
"The paradox of today's hyper-connected world is that somewhere along the way we neglected the most important human sensory connection: touch," explains Petrignani. Frebble seeks to remedy that issue. "It's that reassuring squeeze of the hand that can be the best feeling in the world, and Frebble makes that possible wherever you are."

Xilinx and Pico Computing Announce Industry's First 15Gb/s Hybrid Memory Cube Interface
Companies deliver high performance serial memory solution for All Programmable UltraScale devices
SAN JOSE, Calif., June 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX) and Pico Computing, Inc., both members of the Hybrid Memory Cube Consortium (HMCC), today announced the industry's first 15Gb/s Hybrid Memory Cube (HMC) interface for All Programmable UltraScale(TM) devices. The Xilinx® UltraScale(TM) devices support the full HMC bandwidth of 4 lanes, comprised of 64 transceivers running up to 15Gb/s. Pico Computing's HMC controller IP yields exceptionally high memory bandwidth and outstanding performance/watt in a small but modular and highly scalable footprint. The combined solution enables engineers to begin 15Gb/s HMC designs for applications in domains such as high performance computing, packet processing, waveform processing, and image and video processing.
Hybrid Memory Cube is a high performance memory solution that delivers unprecedented levels of bandwidth, power efficiency, and reliability. The HMCC has developed the HMC technology specification and continues to build the ecosystem to enable its widespread adoption.
"Customers can now leverage the industry's only shipping 20nm FPGAs along with a validated IP core to bring their 15Gb/s HMC designs to market today," said Tamara Schmitz, director of technical marketing for power and memory at Xilinx. "UltraScale FPGAs are the only devices currently available that can support all four HMC lanes to enable full memory bandwidth with additional transceivers for datapath and control signals."
Pico Computing's HMC controller is highly parameterized to yield truly optimized system configurations to meet customers' specific design objectives. The number of HMC links addressed, the number and width of internal ports, clock speeds, power, performance, area, and other parameters can be "dialed in" to yield precisely the performance required.

geographically distributed sites for simplified collaboration
without any tradeoffs in performance - all in a single solution with
no extra third-party data migration software.
-- With a single view of all local and cloud data, as well as automated
data movement, WOS-Bridge removes the limitations created by storage
silos, file counts or storage tier. The resulting high performance
object storage pool can scale uniformly to trillions of objects,
dramatically shrink administrative overhead, and slash TCO, all while
meeting extreme capacity and I/O performance requirements. http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnvar/20130223/MM65263LOGO

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., June 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Levi Ray & Shoup, Inc. (LRS) announced a new version of its MFPsecure(®) pull printing software. The MFPsecure for Ricoh offering is an embedded software agent that runs natively on modern Ricoh(®) multifunction print devices (MFPs).
"This new product update enables 'secure delivery' support for Ricoh hardware devices, which represents an important milestone in our strategy to expand MFPsecure support across key printer vendor platforms," says John Runions, LRS Director of Worldwide Alliance Sales. "MFPsecure for Ricoh enhances our 'secure delivery' solutions and joins our existing clients for HP, Xerox, and Lexmark devices."
The MFPsecure for Ricoh software leverages the touchscreen interface on most recent Ricoh devices to let users selectively print queued documents from the robust LRS(®) Enterprise Output Server. Instead of submitting print jobs directly to a printer, users print to a secure personal print queue. Users can retrieve queued documents by walking up to any defined MFP and authenticating via login, Personal Identification Code or swiping a proximity card over an RFID sensor. This eliminates the problem of sensitive documents sitting unsecured in a printer output tray and can reduce the overall amount of printing in an organization.
Customers and others interested in learning about the MFPsecure product suite are encouraged to visit PullPrinting.LRSOutputManagement.com.

The Seiko Astron GPS Solar Chronograph, Made to Measure for Novak Djokovic
LONDON, June 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
When Novak Djokovic selected Seiko as his watch partner, it was the new Astron GPS
Solar collection that particularly caught his eye, and Novak has worn Astron ever since.
So, what could be more appropriate than to introduce a Novak Djokovic Limited Edition
Astron?
The new Seiko Astron GPS Solar Novak Djokovic Limited Edition is based on the new
chronograph caliber that was introduced at Baselworld 2014 to great acclaim. This
remarkable caliber, like all watches in the Astron collection, adjusts to every time zone
on earth at the touch of a button so that, no matter where Novak's quest for tennis glory
may take him, he has always the exact time on his wrist. We estimate that Novak's 2014
global travel schedule would normally require him to adjust his watch at least 60 times.
With Astron, he does not have to worry about it once.
The 8X82 caliber offers Novak two new functions - a six-hour chronograph and an
electronic function in the crown for even easier adjustment of the secondary functions.
Furthermore, the new watch is 30% smaller in size than the existing 7X caliber. This size
has been achieved by a new advance in Astron's energy-saving technology which allows the
watch to connect to the GPS network with a smaller antenna.
The Novak Djokovic Limited Edition has unique appeal, thanks to the black ceramic
bezel, the extra-strength silicon strap and the rose-gold tone of the steel case. The case
back carries Novak's name and signature with each watch's own serial number engraved
beneath.

Unveiling of NAO Evolution: A Stronger Robot and a More Comprehensive Operating System
PARIS, June 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
ALDEBARAN is announcing the launch of NAO EVOLUTION, the new generation of its NAO
robot, equipped with the NAOqi 2.0(TM) operating system.
Aldebaran, the global leader in humanoid robotics, is pleased to announce the launch
of NAO EVOLUTION, the 5th and latest generation of NAO, the interactive, autonomous, and
fully programmable robot. NAO is already being used for specific research and education
purposes. Over 5000 robots are currently operating in 70 countries. With its new
functionality, NAO EVOLUTION is the next big step for the development of innovative
applications for a broad range of companies and content publishers.
NAO EVOLUTION has the most up-to-date operating system, NAOqi 2.0, now being used by
all of the company's robots, including the emotional robot Pepper. Designed for easy
natural voice interaction, the NAOqi environment includes a dialogue engine, an emotional
engine, and Autonomous Life- the system giving NAO. All robots designed by Aldebaran share
the same technologies and operating system, enabling the transfer applications from one
robot to another with a minimum amount of adaptation. In this sense, Aldebaran has
succeeded in the challenge of creating a unique "platform" available in several humanoid
forms and benefiting from the same advanced software.
NAO EVOLUTION also has improved functionality for easy interaction between humans and
the robot and allowing developers to program complex sequences themselves:
- Improved shape and facial detection and recognition using new algorithms
- Improved sound source location using 4 directional microphones
- Refined obstacle detection and distance estimation with a detection range from
1 cm (0.39 inches) to 3 m (9.8 feet) using new sonar telemeters
- More powerful battery: 48.6 watt-hours, giving NAO EVOLUTION about 1 h 30 min
of battery life in operational mode, i.e. 30% more than the previous generation.
Although NAO EVOLUTION is the same size as before (height: 58 cm, 1.9 feet), it is
now:
- Stronger, with metal gears in the neck, hips, legs, and ankles.
- Quieter, with soles that dampen the noise and friction of its footsteps.
- More skillful, grasping objects more easily using finger grips.
"This new phase is fully in line with our vision of eventually offering the greatest
possible number of humanoid robots for a variety of purposes" says Bruno Maisonnier,
founder and CEO of Aldebaran. "Apart from schools and universities, we would like
companies and the developer community to get hold of our robots and create applications
that will ensure the success of NAO in the future."
Now available, NAO EVOLUTION will be marketed at the following prices (not including
VAT) by region: Europe: 4,690 EUR - Asia-Pacific: 7,000 EUR - North and South America:
7,990 USD.
These packages include a full range of software and services and 1 to 3 years of
after-sales servicing and warranties.
Aldebaran, the names and logos of NAO, Pepper and NAOqi are designated trademarks of
Aldebaran in France and in other countries.

CABLExpress Transforms its Skinny-Trunk Fiber Optic Trunks with 18 Percent Diameter and 47 Percent Weight Reductions
Product Developments Allow for Increased Cabling Capacity in the Data Center
SYRACUSE, N.Y., June 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- CABLExpress announced today at NY Tech Summit that it has reduced the diameter and weight of its Skinny-Trunk® fiber optic trunk cables to allow for increased capacity and ease of cable management in data center infrastructure systems.
-- Reduction in overall cable diameter by an average of 18 percent across
all fiber counts
-- Decrease in weight of trunks by an average of 47 percent across all
fiber counts
-- Reduction of MTP® breakout legs by 33 percent, from 3 mm to 2 mm
"These fiber trunks will help organizations maximize the overall efficiency of their data centers," said Lisa Belodoff, vice president of CABLExpress. "Our engineering team works in partnership with our customers to develop solutions for issues they're dealing with on a daily basis. These enhancements will not only make their jobs easier, but provide a clear benefit when evaluating total cost of ownership of the IT infrastructure spend."
In addition to the physical changes in the Skinny-Trunk fiber trunks, the enhancements also allow for a decreased bend radius of the cabling.
"The bend radius impacts overall performance because the lower the bend radius, the lower the potential for signal loss," said Kent Goldsmith, RCDD, DCDC, engineering manager at CABLExpress. "By reducing the opportunities for signal loss and network downtime, organizations are also minimizing the risk of disrupting the critical business processes that their customers, patients or students rely on."
The enhanced Skinny-Trunk fiber trunks are part of the CABLExpress Skinny-Trunk Solution.

SEATTLE, June 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Tableau Software (NYSE: DATA) today announced the general availability of Tableau 8.2, an update that brings Tableau to Mac users around the world and adds a feature to help people tell stories with their data. With Tableau 8.2, Mac users will have a fully-featured analytics application that lets them ask questions of their data. Story Points will allow everyone to create interactive, data-driven stories that they can share with their organizations, networks and the world.
"Mac users now have simpler and more seamless access to their data using this new version of Tableau Desktop. to what it means and how to interpret it so they can better connect with
their customers and grow their business," said Susan Baier, owner of
Audience Audit. "Story Points allows me to walk my clients through a
sequence of visualizations and accompanying highlights just as if I were
in the room with them. It ensures that key insights aren't lost as the
analysis is shared throughout their organizations. I am now
incorporating Story Points into every project we conduct."
-- "Story Points allows us to tell an entire visual story using just one
screen," said Veronica Simoes, General Director at Tableau Brazil

change as the data changes - or as the views and dashboards change. The
stories can then be published to Tableau Server, Tableau Online and
Tableau Public so that anyone can view and engage with them directly in
a browser or on a mobile device.

connection experience that will be simpler and more visual for users.

EcoNet's Energy Saving Wireless EV100 Vents Earn Z-Wave Certification
CLEARWATER, Fla., June 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- EcoNet Controls of Clearwater Florida, a manufacturer of Home Automation Products, has completed the certification process for its series of wireless vents. The EV100 vent/register is officially Z-Wave certified and has been added to the growing list of Z-Wave devices recognized by the Z-Wave Alliance.
Bulogics, Inc. of Philadelphia, PA, an independent wireless automation engineering and design company, certified EcoNet's EV100 Z-Wave Vent.
The EV100 series of Z-Vent's are direct replacements for standard home forced air vents and are available in several sizes, and in two colors. These wireless controlled battery powered vents make energy management, and energy savings, simple and affordable. Any computer or smart phone can be used to control and manage the opening and closing of the vents, from anywhere internet access is available.
When used with a standard Z-Wave home automation system, the wireless Z-Vent allows direct control of heating or AC air flow to specific rooms in a home. When properly configured, the Z-Vent Energy Management System can reduce energy cost by 10% to 20%. Configuration options include the combination of occupancy schedules, activity sensors and temperature sensors. A simple example of an energy saving configuration would limit forced air flow in unoccupied rooms on a schedule. The bedroom airflow would automatically cut off when the room is empty during the day and the living area of home would have full air flow. The reverse vent control schedule would apply overnight when the bedrooms where occupied. As well as open and closed positions, the vents can be partially opened or closed with settings of 10% to 90% allowing even distribution air flow in problem areas of the home.
EcoNet Controls, a division of ICI Controls, Inc., was formed in 1993. EcoNet Controls designs and manufactures wireless automation products with a focus on energy management and security.
CarCharging Intends to Integrate Tesla Motors' Electric Vehicle Charging Technology into its Blink Network
Leaders in Electric Vehicle and Charging Infrastructure Expand Access to Technology and Services to Benefit EV Drivers and the Industry
MIAMI BEACH, Fla., June 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Car Charging Group, Inc. (OTCQB: CCGI) ("CarCharging"), the largest owner, operator, and provider of electric vehicle (EV) charging services and owner of the Blink Network, one of the largest EV charging networks, announced its intention to integrate the Tesla Motors' EV charging technology into Blink EV charging stations. According to the blog on the Tesla Motors' website dated June 12, 2014, Chief Executive Officer, Elon Musk, stated that the company would "not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology". Mr. Musk noted that the decision to provide access to the patents is "in the spirit of the open source movement, for the advancement of electric vehicle technology" and that "Tesla, other companies making electric cars, and the world would benefit from a common, rapidly-evolving technology platform".
While Tesla Motors' Model S currently includes an adaptor for the J1772(TM) connector, the standard for public EV charging stations and compatible with EVs sold in North America, CarCharging anticipates incorporating the technology of Tesla Motors' charging port into Blink charging stations as well as the Society of Automobile Engineers' (SAE) new J1772(TM) DC Fast Charging combo coupler. By integrating these charging ports and connectors with its current J1772 and CHAdeMO connectors, CarCharging will expand the charging options currently available for EV drivers, including CarCharging's network of 119 DC Fast Chargers, the largest network of DC Fast Chargers in the United States.

Mitsubishi Electric US, Inc. Visual and Imaging Systems Division Introduces 60" Slim Display Wall Cube at InfoComm
LAS VEGAS, June 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Mitsubishi Electric Visual and Imaging Systems Division will unveil its newest display wall cube - the 60" Slim Cube - at InfoComm this week. This space-saving cube is an alternative to LCD flat panels designed specifically for applications that require near-zero bezel, true 24/7 continuous operation, and a low total cost of ownership. The new VS-60HS12U Slim Cube will be on display in Booth #C-8308 at InfoComm in Las Vegas, June 18-20, 2014.
The rear-projection LED display cube measures only 20.5 inches deep, which is approximately 26 percent slimmer than Mitsubishi Electric's similarly sized, conventional rear-projection LED display cubes. Additionally, depending on how it is installed, the footprint depth of the cube frame stand can be as shallow as 15.2 inches.
"Our Slim Cube offers near-zero bezel, giving the display wall image 85 percent less of a grid than most LCD panels," said James Chan, director, marketing and business planning, Mitsubishi Electric Visual and Imaging Systems Division. "Most importantly, Mitsubishi Electric's Slim Cubes offer a factory-rated 60,000 hours of lifetime continuous operation - more than double the lifetime of LCD panels - reducing the long-term cost."
"Some integrators choose LCD monitors in rooms with limited real estate and budgets, only to find that gridlines are distracting and LCDs are not robust enough for 24/7 operation," Chan added. Mitsubishi Electric's VS-60HS12U Slim Cube offers a better alternative: it is slim enough for the smallest control and operations rooms; it has almost zero-bezel for easy-to-see, clear video and data across the entire wall; and because they are so long-lived, the overall total cost of ownership is low.
Mitsubishi Electric's new LED rear-projection cubes are the only display wall engines that can run continuously without unnecessary interruption resulting from product attrition or performance degradation. Additional information on the Slim Cube is available at http://www.mitsubishi-displaywall.com.

New Stylus from Adonit Brings Pixelpoint Technology to Digital Artists.
The Jot Touch with Pixelpoint(TM) combines a discless fine point tip with features like pressure sensitivity and shortcut buttons.
SHANGHAI, June 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Adonit today launched the Jot Touch with Pixelpoint(TM), their latest pressure sensitive stylus for digital artists. The new stylus features an updated design including a fine point tip made possible by Adonit's patented Pixelpoint(TM) technology, as well as shortcut buttons and pressure sensitivity. And thanks to Adonit's recent collaboration with Adobe, it's also the first third-party stylus that's Creative Cloud connected.
Digital artists familiar with Adonit's Jot styluses will recognize plenty of features in the Jot Touch's latest iteration, but third-party integration with Adobe Creative Cloud is a first in the stylus industry. Users will be able to access their files saved in Creative Cloud, copy and paste between devices and take advantage of Adobe's color inspiration service, Kuler.
But it's the fine point tip that truly sets this stylus apart from others. Using Pixelpoint(TM) technology, Adonit was able to create an incredibly precise, uncommonly small fine point tip. When paired with a Jot-Ready App on any Bluetooth 4 iOS device, the Jot Touch with Pixelpoint(TM) offers pressure sensitivity and shortcut buttons that put key features within easy reach. "The Jot Touch with Pixelpoint(TM) is the next evolution of the earlier Jot Touch," says Kris Perpich, Adonit's Chief Experience Officer, "By bringing Creative Cloud and Pixelpoint(TM) together, we're making giant leaps toward unifying mobile, desktop and cloud-based workspaces into a new digital studio."
The Jot Touch with Pixelpoint(TM) can be purchased at Adonit.net.
About Adonit
Adonit was formed when five guys across two countries launched the company with Writer, one of the ï¬rst iPad keyboard cases on the market; their line of Jot styluses followed one year later, when a Kickstarter campaign launched the company into growth mode. Today, they have customers in 100 countries worldwide, and have sold over 2 million Jot styluses.
As Adonit grows, so do their goals and services. The company has recently partnered with Adobe and Evernote to bring styluses and software to digital artists and notetakers. What started with a stylus has turned into something new: a group of likeminded makers leading the charge to build a new digital studio.

The 3D Systems products now stocked by RS in China and South East Asia include a range of 3D printers, 3D scanners and cartridges, comprising: the second generation Cube(R) plug-and play 3D printer; the CubeX(R) desktop 3D printer; and the Sense(TM) 3D scanner. Also available to pre-order from RS, for delivery from July 2014, are the very latest third generation Cube(R) 3 and CubePro(TM) 3D printers.
Cube(R) 3 is the only dual material, plug-and-play, child-safe IEC 60950 certified 3D printer that is easy to use. The printer is supplied with two starter cartridges in neon green and white, and 25 designs to start printing quickly. Cube 3 delivers up to two times faster print speed and accuracy than other printers on the market for printed parts up to 6" cubed. In addition to ABS and PLA plastic, CubePro also supports a new engineering grade nylon material, perfect for end-use applications.
Cube 3 and CubePro both offer multi-colour and multi-materials, ultra-high resolution settings of 70-micron thin print layers to give smoothness and fine detail, faster print speeds, and printing on-the-go from a smartphone app to be released by 3D Systems when product shipments begin. Both printers feature a colour touchscreen with an intuitive user interface and LEDs highlighting prints in action, and are equipped with fast Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.
The second generation Cube(R) is a simple plug-and-play printer offering 3D printing capability with fast print speed and high accuracy for printed parts up to 5.5" cubed. Certified to IEC 60950 for safe-at-home use, Cube uses a smart cartridge system that detects material type automatically based on the cartridge, so no adjustment of the print settings is required. RS is stocking PLA cartridges for Cube in a range of nine colours.
CubeX(R) is a desktop 3D printer, offering the largest print volume in its category and mono, dual or triple-colour printing. CubeX provides professional printability with 1,070 cubic inches of space, or 10.8" x 10.45" x 9.5". There are several options for print modes, including a choice of accuracy: High Definition (125 Micron), Crisp Definition (250 Micron) or Standard Definition (500 Micron), and a choice of print fill density: light, medium or solid. CubeX prints in both PLA and ABS plastics, and is available in multiple colour options: the basic CubeX single colour: CubeX Duo, offering dual colour and materials; and CubeX Trio, the top-of-the range triple colour, multi-material option. Like all 3D Systems printers, CubeX uses the smart MoistureLock cartridge system. Ten CubeX PLA cartridge colour options are available to purchase from RS.
Sense(TM) is the first 3D scanner designed for the consumer and optimized for 3D printing. Sense is handheld, and delivers precise instant physical photography, processing data in seconds for an instantly 3D printable file. SINGAPORE, June 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Inmarsat is set to deliver a new lease of life for smart device users on every continent with the introduction of its innovative IsatHub service. Scheduled for commercial launch in August 2014, the new service will be the most powerful, portable solution available for connecting smart devices when beyond the reach of terrestrial mobile and fixed networks. However remote the location, the IsatHub service will enable a user to talk, text, access the internet and apps using their own smart device.
IsatHub is receiving its first live public demonstration at an exclusive global preview at CommunicAsia 2014 in Singapore.
When commercially launched in August, the new service will be accessible via the Wideye iSavi terminal from AddValue. A small, lightweight terminal (less than half the size of a standard laptop), iSavi can connect to any iPhone, iPad and/or iPod Touch or Android device via WiFi. Using the IsatHub control app on their smart device, users can gain access to the IsatHub service, allowing them to use both its data capabilities and dedicated high-quality voice line.
Once the IsatHub connection is established, it will provide a personal and secure network up to 30m (100ft) from the terminal. The control app has additional features such as set-up assistance, full control over additional device access, as well as visibility of data usage from each device sharing the IsatHub connection.
The IsatHub voice app enables users to make and receive voice calls on their device via IsatHub's dedicated high-quality voice line, as well as sending and receiving text messages, even if the device is for WiFi use only. The IsatHub control app and voice app can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.
"You could be a thousand kilometers from the nearest mobile network and still connect to the rest of the world for applications ranging from video calls to accessing your emails," said Drew Brandy, Vice President of Strategy & Development, Inmarsat Enterprise, who is attending IsatHub's live demonstration in Singapore. "For companies, this means that employees can stay productive and in contact regardless of whether they are in a mobile signal 'blackspot' or the middle of a desert. For private users, IsatHub means that experiencing an adventure -- from the Amazon to the Andes -- can be shared with family and friends in real time."
IsatHub features the highest data rate of any equivalent service with standard IP data up to 240/384kbps (send/receive), in addition to a dedicated, high-quality voice line.
IsatHub connects to the outside world via the award-winning Inmarsat-4 (I-4) constellation, which is used by governments, businesses, broadcasters, humanitarian agencies and many others, to ensure voice and data connectivity on land, at sea and in the air right across the world. The Inmarsat-4 fleet of satellites operates globally, except for extreme polar regions, with an average availability of 99.9 per cent.
Ronald Spithout, President, Inmarsat Enterprise, said: "No other mobile satellite operator can offer this performance and reliability in global smart device connectivity. As an organisation, we are dedicated to bringing voice and data connectivity to those regions not supported by costly terrestrial networks. IsatHub is a further advance and brings our space-based 3G network to more users than ever before."

Trimble Participates In First-Ever White House Maker Faire
SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Trimble (NASDAQ: TRMB) is proud to be a participant in the first-ever White House Maker Faire, held today to showcase the Maker Movement -- tinkerers, inventors, and entrepreneurs who promote entrepreneurship and innovation -- and the tools and technologies they rely on to do so. Through SketchUp, the "3D for everyone" design tool used by 30 million designers, builders and makers of things every year, Trimble has become closely involved with the Maker Movement.
"It is an honor to participate in this White House event," said Steven W. Berglund, president and CEO of Trimble. "Today we saw innovators of all ages using tools like SketchUp to help shape the future. There has been a lot of talk lately about how the Maker Movement will transform and revitalize American manufacturing. Today's event demonstrated that the possibilities are endless."
Maker Faire, organized by Maker Media, is a gathering of curious and innovative people who enjoy learning and who love sharing what they can do. It's a venue for makers to show examples of their work and interact with others about it. There are now more than one hundred Maker Faires a year around the world. The White House Maker Faire is the latest installment.
Among the wide range of SketchUp projects showcased this year is the "WikiHouse," an open source housing design system developed in SketchUp and fabricated directly with robotic machine tools. WikiHouse was implemented through a unique collaboration between U.K. design firm 00 ("Zero-zero"), ShopBot Tools, Vectric CAM software and the SketchUp team. Trimble has exhibited several WikiHouse prototypes, at events including Maker Faires in New York and the Bay Area, as well as at the USA Science and Engineering Festival in Washington, D.C.
While SketchUp was originally designed to meet the needs of architects and building construction professionals, it rapidly became the design tool of choice tool for inventors across a wide range of industries. In the spirit of open collaboration that defines the Maker Movement, Trimble continues to offer SketchUp Make for free to makers around the world.
"On the SketchUp team, we think of ourselves as 'meta-makers,'" said John Bacus, director of product management for SketchUp. "In other words, we make the tools that help makers do their work more efficiently."
Since 2006, SketchUp Make has been used to design everything from 3D printable parts to the 3D printers on which those parts are made. Robots, DIY satellites, jetpacks, hovercraft and home brewing machines have been designed in SketchUp Make, as well as countless greenhouses, sheds and woodworking shops.
Additionally, Trimble's 3D Warehouse is available at no cost to makers as a place to share their work and collaborate with others. Today, there are more than 2.5 million models shared there. "Browsing the pages of 3D Warehouse is like walking through a museum of invention, all freely shared and available for reuse and improvement by others," said Bacus.
Today, at the first-ever White House Maker Faire, Trimble has committed to expanding its free software services to makers by adding cloud based software and 3D printing tools.
