A Hot Topic: Control Over Thermostat A Key Cause Of Family Fights
Survey Shows That One in Three Will Change Temperature When No One is Looking
MINNEAPOLIS, May 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Although familial harmony reigns in most U.S. households, a recent survey conducted for Honeywell (NYSE: HON) finds that Americans in 12 states are more likely to argue over home temperature than who controls the television remote. The result? One in three people will change the temperature when no one is looking.
Conducted by Ipsos Reid on behalf of Honeywell, the survey shows that home discomfort is a key cause of discord among a majority of American households in the following 12 states: New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Washington, North Carolina, Georgia, Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, Texas, Arizona and California.
According to the survey, 30% of respondents can never agree when it comes to the temperature of the home, and 27% admit to changing the temperature setting when no one looking, compared to 16% who battle for the TV remote. The discord is greatest among younger Americans aged 18-34, among whom 37% never agree about the home temperature, 39% of whom will change the temperature when no one is looking, and 27% of whom will battle for the remote.
Other causes of household conflict: getting chores done and listening:
-- More than 40% of women feel forced to remind those they live with to
help accomplish household chores;
-- Men (18%) are significantly more likely than women (14%) to say that
they are in a constant battle for the TV remote;
-- Couples with children are more likely to never agree on the home's
temperature (34% vs. 28%), change the thermostat when no one is looking
(35% vs. 24%), and always battle for possession of the TV remote (26%
vs. 12%); and
-- 16% of Americans admit they have "pretended not to hear when being asked
to do a household chore", with men twice as likely as women to do so.
"We don't have a solution for getting people to listen, but Honeywell's new Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat with Voice Control may be a good way for families to reduce disagreements over home comfort," said Tony Uttley, general manager of Home Comfort and Energy Systems at Honeywell. "In addition to changing the temperature with your smartphone or tablet, you can simply tell your thermostat what to do. You'll always be listened to, and, you can even lock the controls to prevent others from making changes."
The Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat with Voice Control is a first-of-its-kind device that provides a seamless voice user interface and transforms legacy programming to a rapid, one-step interaction. Using advanced far-field voice-control technology, homeowners are allowed to make their homes warmer or cooler by simply asking the thermostat to "make it four degrees warmer" or "make it much cooler", even from another room in the house.
About the Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat with Voice Control
The Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat with Voice Control allows users to control their home's temperature in three ways; touch via the device screen, by speech commands or by smartphone/tablet. With Wi-Fi connectivity homeowners can control their energy usage and home comfort through their smartphone/tablet using Honeywell's top-rated Total Connect Comfort app. And, because this thermostat is connected through the cloud, it gets smarter with time, adding more commands based on its interactions with homeowners.
There are also multiple methods of voice command control available for users to personalize and optimize the temperature in their home. Homeowners can choose to modify their comfort in real time, at a specific time in the current day, a time in a future day, or adjust comfort against their programmed schedule.
About the Survey
The Ipsos poll was conducted on behalf of Honeywell from April 7 to April 17, 2014. For the survey, a sample of 4,648 American adults was interviewed online in the following states: New York n81, Massachusetts n58, Pennsylvania n63, Washington n51, North Carolina n50, Georgia n52, Michigan n66, Illinois n90, Missouri n52, Texas n93, Arizona n50 and California nd2. These data were weighted to ensure that the sample's age/sex composition reflects that of the actual U.S population according to Census information. The precision of Ipsos online polls are calculated using a credibility interval, with a poll of 4,648 considered accurate to +/- 1.6 percentage points, 300 accurate to 6.5 percentage points and 600 accurate to 4.6 percentage points. Extreme Networks Advances Mobile Scalability with IdentiFi(TM) Wireless LAN
IdentiFi's Industry-leading Performance Heightens the User Experience and Simplifies IT
New Outdoor 802.11ac Access Points Complete the IdentiFi Portfolio
SAN JOSE, Calif., May 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Extreme Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: EXTR), a leader in high performance networking, announced the 3865 802.11ac WLAN outdoor access point, a key addition to the IdentiFi Wireless LAN portfolio. This development makes IdentiFi one of the most complete and scalable enterprise Wi-Fi solutions addressing both indoor and outdoor wireless connectivity.
In today's Experience Economy, user expectations for fast and seamless access are not confined to indoor spaces. As users demand much more in the scale and scope of their mobile connectivity, Wi-Fi networks must evolve to address much higher capacity and scale as traffic grows. IdentiFi uniquely delivers the capacity and ease-of-use demanded by IT and mobile users, both indoors and outdoors.
As BYOD continues to evolve, the number of mobile devices and the diversity of those products attaching to the Wi-Fi network will continue to grow rapidly. For example, IDC reported a 317 percent increase in wearable shipments in 2013, and shipments are expected to reach 111.9 million units by 2018, with a CAGR of 78.4 percent over the next five years.
"BYOD will extend to wearable devices, and the resulting increase in demand will heavily impact wireless LANs everywhere," said Craig Mathias, a principal with the mobile and wireless advisory firm Farpoint Group. "As a result, non-disruptive wireless LAN scalability must be one of the top considerations in the WLAN evaluation process."
"As proven in the most demanding venues, including NFL stadiums and sports arenas, IdentiFi wireless delivers more applications and throughput to users with fewer access points," said Ed Carney, EVP of product and customer success for Extreme Networks. "With the addition of our new outdoor ac products, Extreme offers market-leading scale and performance for big, outdoor venues as well as a variety of other complex enterprises."
"In a community, such as Troy, that strongly values public education, it is imperative to provide the best resources available to prepare our students for their future," said Mark Washington, director of technology at Troy School District in Michigan. "Wireless access is no exception. With more than twenty schools throughout our district, there was a real need for a Wi-Fi solution that addressed the challenge of scalability, as traffic growth has been tremendous. Extreme Networks' IdentiFi Wireless solution enabled us to face these challenges head on, and provides our staff and students with an outstanding smart Wi-Fi solution and the tools that they need to succeed."
Bart's Health is the largest NHS Trust in the United Kingdom serving a population of 2.5 million in east London and beyond. Working with its integration partner, Netconnection Systems, the Trust has deployed over 2,000 wireless access points, including Extreme Networks' ?latest IdentiFi 802.11ac solution.
Commenting on the benefits, Jason Bincalar, deputy director of ICT at Bart's Health said: "We have a large number of mission-critical devices on our high-density wireless network, including workstations on wheels, mobile image intensifiers, blood dispensing fridges, handheld devices and VoIP cordless telephone handsets. These are in addition to the computers, tablets and smartphones you'd expect. Our wireless infrastructure needs to meet the demands of all our users, including hospital staff, patients and visitors, and IdentiFi's proven performance capability and adaptable architecture enables us to do this, delivering a high-functioning ICT network for the best patient care and user experience."

BASKING RIDGE, N.J., May 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless today announced XLTE - the next step in ensuring the very best high-speed data experience available on any wireless network in the United States.
XLTE is Verizon's new way to show consumers that they will now have the benefits of even more capacity on the nation's largest and most reliable 4G LTE network, all made possible by taking advantage of AWS spectrum.
"The industry and tech world recognize this is a big deal, and we want consumers to know, too," said Ken Dixon, chief marketing officer of Verizon Wireless. "We continue to offer the very best network, bar none. Now, XLTE provides an even greater advantage to customers by doubling the 4G LTE bandwidth and providing faster peak speeds in cities coast to coast."
All customers automatically benefit where Verizon Wireless has deployed XLTE, part of the company's ongoing commitment to delivering the best experience in wireless. XLTE adds capacity in neighborhoods or areas where demand is high, especially during busy periods like rush hour, lunch times in crowded areas or during events when mobile data use is the highest.
What is XLTE and how does it work?
XLTE delivers faster peak data speeds and a minimum of double the bandwidth to 4G LTE customers in high traffic areas in markets nationwide where AWS spectrum has been activated.
While XLTE network enhancements are invisible to the customer, the mobile experience is not. XLTE Ready devices automatically access both 700 MHz spectrum and the AWS spectrum in XLTE cities. Customers with 4G LTE devices operating solely on the 700 MHz spectrum in XLTE markets also benefit from the extra capacity created by XLTE Ready device traffic moving to the AWS spectrum.
Nearly all of the devices Verizon Wireless sells, including the newest DROID devices, Samsung Galaxy S4, S5 and Note 3, and the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s, are XLTE Ready when purchased. Today, more than 35 percent of all devices operating on the Verizon Wireless network can take direct advantage of the added capacity that AWS provides.
XLTE is yet another signal of Verizon Wireless' network leadership as the company continues to innovate on the nation's largest and most reliable 4G LTE network and deliver a superior network experience for its customers.

10 Gigabit Server Networking Market Surges Even Before Grantley Arrives, Reports Crehan Research
Stellar 1Q14 Results Deliver Positive Milestones
SAN FRANCISCO, May 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Following some recent softness, the 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) server networking market delivered impressive results in 1Q14, according to the latest server-class adapter & LOM/controller report from Crehan Research (see accompanying figure). The strong showing was even more noteworthy given that servers based on Intel's next-generation Grantley platform have not yet hit the market. "New server micro-architecture platforms, such as Grantley, tend to drive a positive step-function in demand for higher networking speeds," said Seamus Crehan, president of Crehan Research. "The increased processor performance puts greater demands on the network in conjunction with driving a server-upgrade purchase cycle," he explained. "Such stellar results in the seasonally-soft first calendar quarter, even prior to the arrival of Grantley-based servers, are positive indicators for the market's future growth."
Besides the overall strong growth, the report points to other positive milestones in the server networking market during the quarter, including:
-- Record 10GbE shipments which surpassed a 10-million-port annual run rate
-- 10GBASE-T shipments exceeded a one-million-port annual run rate
-- One vendor - Intel - shipped over a million 10GbE ports during the
quarter
-- 40GbE shipments surpassed a 50-thousand-port annual run rate
Last quarter, Crehan Research reported that 10GbE data center switch shipments surpassed those of 1GbE to become a majority of total data center switch shipments. Many of those ports are deployed as uplink, aggregation and core networking connections. Crehan Research now reports that this technology is starting to migrate to direct server access in much greater volumes.

Ricoh's ultra short throw projectors help organizations mobilize information with new embedded interactivity and networking across locations
The new mountable RICOH PJ WX4141N/PJ WX4141NI business projection system offers an incredibly short 4.6 inch throw
MALVERN, Pa., May 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Ricoh Americas Corporation today unveiled a new ultra short throw projection system that helps companies, departments and groups capture, transform and manage information - ultimately enabling work teams to improve their performance through dynamic collaboration. Presenters can display, underline, highlight, annotate, capture and share projected images that previously would have disappeared when the presentation ended.
Ricoh will demo the new RICOH PJ WX4141N/PJ WX4141NI business projection system at the InfoComm 2014 professional audiovisual show, June 14-20 in Las Vegas in Booth# C5825.
Information mobility is a relatively recent term used to describe the state in which an evolving workforce makes smart and strategic use of technology to manage the information it needs to make intelligent business decisions. It's about how people are using technology to revolutionize how they connect and collaborate.
Collaboration is a trouble spot for both those in an office location as well as those who are remote. In a recent online survey among select industries in the U.S. commissioned by Ricoh, 92 percent of respondents said collaborating in real-time with people in multiple locations is very important, yet those surveyed found this to be a task that is very difficult to do. Nearly 40 percent find it difficult to use different platforms or services to communicate externally from their office, and 41 percent find it difficult to collaborate with coworkers located in other offices.
"This new system exemplifies our commitment to a new collaborative work environment where it's essential to share information among people and locations," said Matt Sakauchi, Vice President, Technology Marketing, Ricoh Americas Corporation. "Now, even when employees can't attend a meeting they can still reap the benefits. And when they are at the meeting, they get more out of the session than they ever have."
The new RICOH PJ WX4141NI (the "I" signifies interactive) incorporates an embedded interactivity sensor to activate an included electronic markup pen. The system turns ordinary whiteboards into immersive electronic palettes by projecting an image onto the board, enabling markup with the pen, and capturing the combined image as a sharable PDF file. Other pen devices require users to hang bulky sensors on the wall.
The PJ WX4141NI can easily communicate with other networkable Ricoh projectors on the local network, enabling users in different conference rooms to simultaneously view and mark up the same presentation. With an optional upgrade to Luidia eBeam(®) software, users can bring videos, animations, graphics and PowerPoint® slides into the displayed image and save them, along with markups, as Microsoft PowerPoint presentations. eBeam also enables users to collaborate globally via the Internet enabling markup of the same presentation.
New: make other projectors interactive
The RICOH PJ WX4141NI's interactive pen enables users to digitally draw on a projected image without blemishing the wall or physical whiteboard. The pen can also be used as a remote mouse, enabling presenters to advance slides and circle key points from a distance.
An Interactive Kit can be purchased separately and used to make six other Ricoh projectors interactive. These models include the RICOH PJ X3340, RICOH PJ WX3340, RICOH PJ X3340N, RICOH PJ WX3340N, RICOH PJ X4240N and RICOH PJ WX4240N. The Interactive Kit includes a Digital Pen, sensor card, charger cable, batteries and PC software and dongle to register the pen action.
Convenience comes in small, mountable package
The RICOH PJ WX4141N/PJ WX4141NI projection system casts crisp 1280 x 800 dpi resolution WXGA images of 48 to 80 inches diagonal from as close as 4.6 inches to 9.8 inches to the wall or whiteboard. This incredibly short throw gives presenters plenty of space to maneuver around the room and eliminates distracting shadows. For more convenience, the projection system can be mounted on a wall or ceiling. At 6.6 pounds, it's one of the smallest and lightest projectors in the industry - half the weight of other comparable models - making it easier to carry or mount.
The RICOH PJ WX4141N/PJ WX4141NI projection system is brighter than previous versions at 3,300 lumens and offers a longer lamp life: 5,000 hours in eco-mode. Its audio system offers separate modes for standard delivery, narration and musical accompaniment. The projection system is certified to seamlessly interoperate with Crestron RoomView(®) and AMX NetLinx(®) conference room automation systems. Users of those products can operate the projection system from the same browser-based console that operates room lights, shades and screens.
The new projection system offers a 5000:1 contrast ratio and also supports full 3D video. Users simply plug in a Blu-ray player to the HDMI input and don their 3D glasses (available from Ricoh).
The RICOH PJ WX4141NI projection system is available today for an MSRP of $2,550. The projector-only RICOH PJ WX4141N is available for $2,299. The optional Luidia eBeam(®) software costs $320. All are available through Ricoh professional AV distributors Shoreview Distribution and Stampede.

China's Most Popular Game, An Action Fighter, Being Released in the U.S. by Kabam
Working preview of "Blades of Excalibur" available now on YouTube
SAN FRANCISCO, May 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Kabam, the leader in the western world for free-to-play core games for traditional players, announced today that "Blades of Excalibur," an action-fighter that was the most popular game in all of China for 2013, is being released in the United States.
The Web-hosted game will be available next month. Before then, gamers can test-drive Blades of Excalibur on YouTube, which is hosting a working preview that provides an introduction to the game and accurately conveys its overall look and game play. The full version will have many more features than those available on the YouTube preview.
In China, Blades of Excalibur was called "Three Kingdoms Action." It was developed by Joy You, a four-year old Shanghai publishing house, and generated more than $100 million in revenues last year, outpacing all rivals.
In bringing the game outside of Asia, Kabam has preserved the game play, but transported the setting from ancient China to a mythical Medieval England, with King Arthur aided by the wizard Merlin and the Knights of the Round Table. Dragons and other monsters stalk the land.
The game is another example of Kabam showing its technology leadership, since "Blades of Excalibur" will be the first Web-based fighting game that has the speed, responsiveness and graphical sophistication of a console. In the full version of the game, players control their characters using the keyboard, and can play the game against the computer in campaign mode, or else against a particular person or team of people in multi-player mode.
Like all Kabam games, "Blades of Excalibur" is entirely free-to-play, and players can upgrade their skills or acquire new weapons by reaching game milestones. Should they so choose, they can also buy new capabilities through the game's in-app purchasing.
Kabam's work with "Blades of Excalibur" is in connection with the company's $50 million development fund, dedicated to introducing some of the world's most popular games to new audiences by rolling them out in new geographies. As part of the program, Kabam is already publishing 30 games from developers in Australia, China, Israel, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and the United States.
With a $700 million valuation and annual revenue last year of $360 million, Kabam is one of the fastest-growing companies in the gaming industry, and is frequently discussed as a potential IPO candidate. Two of its games, Kingdoms of Camelot and The Hobbit, were among the 10 top-grossing apps for the iOS market in 2013. The Hobbit was appearing on the list for the second year in a row.
About Kabam
Kabam is the leader in the western world for free-to-play games for traditional players with first and third party published titles available on mobile devices via its own dedicated channel in the Apple App Store, Google Play, Amazon Appstore, and on the Web via Facebook, Yahoo, Kabam.com and other platforms. Kabam is the fastest growing Internet media company in the San Francisco Bay Area and the 17th fastest growing company overall in the U.S., according to Deloitte LLP. Kabam's 2013 revenues exceeded $360 million, a 100 percent increase over 2012. The company is profitable and cash-flow positive, and has created four titles that have grossed more than $100M each in their life. Kabam's Kingdoms of Camelot franchise has grossed more than $250 million in less than four years, making it one of the top 10 strategy franchises of all time. In 2012, Kabam Publishing was launched to provide third-party developers access to Kabam's technology platform, distribution channels, data analytics and best practices that Kabam's in-house development teams use to bring wildly successful games to players worldwide. Kabam has approximately 800 employees around the world, with corporate headquarters in San Francisco. The company's investors include Google, Warner Brothers, MGM, Intel, Canaan Partners, Redpoint Ventures, Pinnacle Ventures and others. Raritan Unveils Fast and Intelligent Rack Power Transfer Switch at Cisco Live
-- Patent-Pending Hybrid Design Delivers Fast and Reliable Power Load Transfer Performance --
SAN FRANCISCO, May 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Raritan, a leading provider of data center infrastructure management (DCIM) and rack power distribution solutions, today introduced the Intelligent Rack Transfer Switch (PX3TS) to help keep data center equipment operating through power failures. When the new switch senses power loss, it provides fast and seamless power load transfers from one power source to another without interrupting operations.
The PX3TS switch -- which was announced today at Cisco Live, Cisco's annual IT and communications conference -- is targeted at cloud computing infrastructures and data center racks filled with one-power-supply devices.
Raritan's PX3TS switch uses an innovative hybrid design to provide fast power loss detection and load transfers that exceed that of other offerings in the market, including standard automatic transfer switches (ATS), and at a lower price point and greater energy efficiency than static transfer switches.
By sampling the current 4,800 times per second with built-in sensors, the Raritan switch transfers the load within four to eight milliseconds. To deliver fast performance and reliability, Raritan's patent-pending hybrid design uses the best of both electromechanical relay and silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) technologies.
"Every millisecond counts when there is a power failure," says Greg More, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Raritan. "Our new hybrid rack transfer switch is one of the fastest in the industry -- twice as fast as standard automatic transfer switches, which take from 10 to 16 milliseconds to transfer loads."
The new Raritan Transfer Switch also provides remote monitoring and PDU unit-level metering to support capacity planning decisions and to utilize power resources efficiently. Real-time power information gathered by the switch can be easily shared with Raritan's DCIM software solution for monitoring and managing the health of the rack and the data center.
Availability
Available worldwide, the Raritan Transfer Switch PX3TS comes with a number of options and a range of voltage and plug types. The PX3TS switch comes with an intelligent network-ready controller with display, and with two USB-A and one USB-B ports to support Wi-Fi networking, webcams and cascading to share IP drops. The switch's sensor ports support optional Raritan plug-and-play sensors for monitoring environmental conditions in the racks.

Sonics Introduces Next-Generation Development Environment To Ease Semiconductor IP Integration For Heterogeneous Multicore SoCs
New SonicsStudio® Director GUI Improves Designer Productivity and Quality of Results
MILPITAS, Calif., May 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Sonics, Inc., the world's foremost supplier of on-chip network (NoC) technologies and services, today introduced its next-generation SonicsStudio development environment that addresses the integration challenges of complex system-on-chip (SoC) designs that include multiple processor and intellectual property (IP) cores. Central to this environment is SonicsStudio Director, a new graphical user interface (GUI) featuring a host of new tools and capabilities for configuring Sonics' IP products. SonicsStudio Director uses an intuitive, visual design paradigm that emphasizes ease-of-use, raises SoC designer productivity, and improves overall quality of results (QoR).
"SoC design complexity has reached integration of 100 or more IP cores per chip in many cases," said Drew Wingard, CTO of Sonics. "SoC architects and chip designers need a robust tool set that supports automated IP integration, architecture exploration, and on-chip network configuration for both types of users while making the design and verification flows more efficient. SonicsStudio Director builds on our nearly 18 years of successful SoC design experience to provide our on-chip network customers a visual environment for creating their next wave of heterogeneous multicore devices with the highest QoR."
Supports First-time and Power Users
The SonicsStudio Director environment provides fast integration and configuration of Sonics' complete IP product portfolio. It contains several modules which allow designers, from expert power users to those building their first chips, to easily integrate their chosen IP cores together with Sonics' products within their SoC design flows. SonicsStudio Director streamlines SoC design and validation enabling users to seamlessly interact with tools for SystemC and logic simulation, performance analysis, dynamic and static verification, logic synthesis, power partitioning, top-level chip assembly, and automatic data book creation.
The new SonicsStudio Director GUI presents a familiar Eclipse look and feel with context-sensitive editing that shortens the learning curve while minimizing errors. Starting from a familiar schematic view, SonicsStudio Director summarizes configuration information in powerful tables that support filtering, sorting, and multiple entry capabilities instantly familiar to spreadsheet users - plus interactive copy/paste to external spreadsheet programs. Configuration errors are conveniently summarized in a separate view cross-linked to the error source and with "quick fix" options for common mistakes. The point-and-click interface supports simulation test case creation, stimulus generation, simulation, and performance result visualization.
More experienced users will appreciate the embedded Tcl console, which supports both interactive and batch-mode scripting of all GUI functions and the design flow steps. This powerful capability greatly speeds and simplifies the creation, selection, inspection, and manipulation of portions of a design and the automation of complex "what if" scenarios.
Integrated performance analysis tools visualize transactional events and measure utilization and latency. The configuration meta-data itself is also directly edited in a context-sensitive text editor, enabling controlled search-and-replace, copy-and-paste, and other operations with continuous error checking. All of these components are linked together, so selections from the Tcl console filter the displayed rows in the table editor. Edits in a table are immediately reflected in the schematic. Static analysis results can be annotated back to the schematic.
Availability and DAC Demo
SonicsStudio Director will be available in late June on a subscription basis for Sonics' IP customers. Sonics will also be demonstrating SonicsStudio Director at the Design Automation Conference, June 2-4, 2014 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, CA. Contact your Sonics sales representative for pricing and more information.
