TelePacific Communications to Acquire Fixed Wireless Internet Service Provider Covad Wireless
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 22, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- TelePacific Communications, the largest California-based CLEC providing integrated voice and data telecommunications services to the small and medium-sized business ("SMB") customer segment in California and Nevada, and MegaPath, Inc., the leading provider of managed IP data, voice, and security services in North America, today announced a definitive agreement for TelePacific Communications to acquire MegaPath's NextWeb, Inc. subsidiary, dba Covad Wireless, a broadband fixed wireless carrier operating in California and Nevada.
Under the terms of the agreement, TelePacific Communications will gain approximately 3,500 profitable broadband fixed wireless business customers in California, Nevada and suburban Chicago through an all cash purchase of capital stock.
TelePacific's acquisition of Covad Wireless will expand TelePacific's SMB services into the fixed wireless market with a complementary network footprint. Transaction benefits include increased availability of high bandwidth products to customers, the ability to provision customers more quickly, and own the "last mile" which reduces dependency on incumbent local exchange carriers (ILECs). The transaction also strengthens TelePacific's position as the number one competitor to AT&T and Verizon for SMB customers in the California and Nevada markets.
"Covad Wireless is an established innovator in fixed wireless broadband delivery with demonstrated managerial and operational excellence," said Dick Jalkut, president and CEO of TelePacific. "Benefits to new and existing customers will be twofold--expanded fixed wireless service offerings and the expertise of the entire Covad Wireless team."
Covad Wireless customers will gain access to TelePacific's enhanced business services including converged voice and data networks in California and Nevada, and wide area networking capabilities globally. The addition of a broadband fixed wireless network allows TelePacific to offer quick-to-deploy wireless Internet, and reinforce its business continuity solutions with both wireless and wired network paths.
"Following our merger with Covad and Speakeasy, MegaPath is continuing to refine our business with a focus on providing nationwide access, security and voice services," said D. Craig Young, Chairman and CEO of MegaPath. "As a regional offering, Covad Wireless fell outside of our strategic focus, and this agreement ensures that those customers are properly supported."
The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including federal regulatory approvals. TelePacific will assume operations responsibility for the Covad Wireless customer base following regulatory approval and closing, expected in the first or second quarter of 2011. Throughout the closing process, there will be no impact to Covad Wireless customer service or support. TelePacific and Covad Wireless will work together to ensure a seamless transition of customer service.
The exclusive financial and legal advisors to TelePacific were Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, respectively. The exclusive legal advisor to MegaPath was Bingham McCutchen LLP.

Global Cellular Revolutionizes the Mobile Industry by Eliminating International Roaming Charges
CEDARHURST, New York, December 22, 2010/PRNewswire/ --
- By Allowing Their Customers to Rent International Owned Cell Lines,
Global Cellular Cuts Out the International Roaming Charges Tourists Would
Otherwise Pay
Global Cellular announced its newest product today, the GlobalSIM.
Essentially the GlobalSIM allows travelers to take a prepaid SIM card in
their unlocked cell phone and make calls from almost any location in the
world.
"We are providing a SIM card that works in over 175 countries where in 80
of them the incoming calls are absolutely free. This changes the rules of the
game entirely," says Dani Drutman, VP Product Development. "People no longer
have to buy temporary SIM cards that become irrelevant after time. They pay a
small one time purchase fee and keep the line for life." Drutman continues to
say that they have sold thousands of the product already, "We have spent a
lot of time and research on this product and are ecstatic with the results."
The GlobalSIM is a no brainer. All anyone needs is an Unlocked GSM phone.
A traveler simply puts the SIM card in their phone and starts dialing. In the
past, travelers who wanted to take a cell phone with them to their
destination would have to contact their provider in advance and pay high fees
to activate roaming in an attempt to get a better deal. In many cases the
fees were not known to the customer until they returned to find hundreds and
sometimes thousands of dollars worth of roaming charges waiting for them.
"At Global Cellular our vision is that every traveler will have a
GlobalSIM," says Neil Hammer, VP Sales and Marketing. "Just as cell phones
used to be a luxury and in time they became more accessible, the GlobalSIM
gives the international traveler the ability to stay connected at affordable
rates. The GlobalSIM allows anyone to travel globally and pay locally."
With their offices worldwide, Global Cellular can quickly provide to
locations close to their branches in New York, London, Toronto, Australia and
Tel Aviv.

LULAC Pleased by Passage of FCC's Open Internet Rules
Chairman's Net Neutrality Order Appears to Allow for Continued Expansion of Broadband to All Americans
WASHINGTON, Dec. 22, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) today announced support for the passage of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Julius Genachowski's Open Internet Order pending a full and thorough review of the order once it is made public. The provisions seemingly offered by the order appear to be a notable accomplishment for the Commission and a sign of its diligent efforts over the past few years to reach a solution that ensures the continuation of an open Internet while enabling consumers to obtain affordable access to broadband.
"The passage of the Open Internet Order will hopefully lead to new jobs and opportunities through high-speed Internet for people in all communities - especially for Latinos who have been on the wrong side of the digital divide for far too long," said Brent Wilkes, executive director of LULAC. "The Commission took a broad approach to its information gathering when developing this order, and we thank the Commission for integrating the voices of the many communities who look to the internet for continued economic empowerment. Based on our understanding, this middle ground solution appears to show that the Commission was both deliberative and pragmatic when arriving at its ultimate policy."
LULAC hopes that the apparent resolution of the long-standing net neutrality debate will now mean more focus on ensuring 100% access and adoption will be the guiding principle of the FCC and the Administration's efforts in this area, especially as it relates to Latinos and other traditionally underserved communities. This settlement will ultimately benefit consumers as it will enable Latino and other underserved communities to connect to broadband - both mobile and wireline- and realize the myriad benefits that broadband allows, regardless of ethnicity or income level.
"We will carefully review the FCC's order once it becomes public and we look forward to working with the FCC to focus now on the many crucial goals outlined in the Commission's National Broadband Plan," added Wilkes.
The League of United Latin American Citizens, the largest and oldest Hispanic membership organization in the country, advances the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, housing, health and civil rights of Hispanic Americans through community-based programs operating through 880 LULAC councils nationwide.

Skona Advertising Takes White Elephants Virtual This Holiday
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 22, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- San Francisco-based ad firm, Skona Advertising, Inc. (http://www.skona.com), has launched a holiday microsite, http://www.skona.com/xmas, inviting last-minute shoppers and eco-sensitive gifters to bestow one-of-kind presents to friends, family and anyone else who might relish a Shakespeare Tissue Box Cover or Cat Butt Pencil Sharpener.
The boutique agency, which packs a creative punch, has created a gallery featuring sundry virtual white elephants; users can browse through a dozen quirky presents, make their selections, and email the perfect gift to anyone in their address book - without plastic or packaging, gift receipts or exorbitant overnight shipping expenses.
"We thought it might be fun to virtualize the concept of the white elephant," said Scott Springer, Creative Director, Skona Advertising. "When you receive a horrible gift, you're stuck trying to figure out where to stash it or how to re-gift it. The site is a goofy way to give terrible presents without all of the fuss or waste."
The site also eliminates the taboo of re-gifting. Users can give and re-give the same white elephants to indulge the spirit of generosity this holiday season. Aunt Barbara will clamor for Skona's Merman Ornament - a mythical, seductive little man who's taken many turns beneath the mistletoe - and knows her co-worker Franny will covet the shirtless merman, too.
Launched early last week, Skona's gallery is now making the rounds among colleagues, friends and family eager to share the soft and fuzzy 3D Teddy Bear Sweater or the Circular Saw Blade, which features hand-painted elk frolicking in the forest. The site is available at http://www.skona.com/xmas or Facebook keyword "white elephant."

PAR Springer-Miller Systems Addresses Major Challenges in Hospitality Industry with NetDimensions' LMS
HONG KONG, Dec. 22, 2010 /PRNewswire-Asia-FirstCall/ -- NetDimensions (London Stock Exchange, AIM: NETD), a global provider of performance, knowledge and learning management systems, announces that PAR Springer-Miller Systems, the leading provider of guest-centric hospitality management systems has successfully increased savings and customer satisfaction with the implementation of the Enterprise Knowledge Platform (EKP) learning management system (LMS).
Tricia Majetich, Manager of Implementation Support at PAR Springer-Miller Systems stated: "We needed to deliver a cost effective and standardized training solution to our customers. Travel and accommodation costs for our trainers were becoming more and more expensive as fuel prices continue to rise."
Delivering web-based, on-demand training content through EKP LMS enabled PAR Springer-Miller Systems to reduce installation and training expenses, as well as the number of on-site training days.
"Immediate savings can be measured in the reduced number of support calls, number of man-days required for installation, and the on-going empowerment of our customers and employees to pursue self-guided e-learning," explained Majetich.
Addressing client frustration over high turnover rates
Turnover rates within the hospitality industry average over 65% per year. Web-based training provides PAR Springer-Miller Systems' customers with a cost effective and standardized training curriculum that helps to ensure new employees are being trained correctly by subject matter experts every time.
"We are also seeing less frustration from our customers when they have employee turnover. If a hotel has an unexpected change of staff, new employees can be trained immediately - the hotel does not need to wait for a trainer to travel to their location," added Majetich.
"Since installing EKP, the adoption of our web-based training has increased dramatically. We're very proud of the content we have created and the LMS that is delivering training to our customers. Our customers have been asking for an alternative to on-site training, and we're excited that we are finally able to deliver web-based training that is easy to use and meets their reporting needs."
Eric Miller, Senior Account Manager for North America at NetDimensions said: "We are very excited to work with PAR Springer-Miller Systems in helping them address these major challenges in the hospitality industry.
"The EKP LMS is much more than a traditional training software environment. It is also a unique solution that can be integrated into all aspects of a business and help our clients reduce cost, improve productivity, manage risk and drive change in their organization."
Key requirements that only EKP LMS could deliver
PAR Springer-Miller Systems also required a learning management system that would enable its customers to track the training and knowledge of their employees easily without a lot of assistance. "We needed a way to manage, deliver and track training and assessments for both our internal employees and our customers. After an extensive search and countless demonstrations, we felt that EKP addressed all of our needs," noted Majetich.
"EKP has a very intuitive user interface and we were confident that our customers would be able to navigate it. We are also very pleased with the assessment functionality within EKP. Viewing, grading, and printing tests is simple and managers can quickly see the performance of their employees."
PAR Springer-Miller Systems also had some very specific configuration needs that only EKP could provide. "We needed to be able to set up a hierarchy so that each hotel and their parent company could report on their employees' progress," explained Majetich.
"In addition, EKP gave us the flexibility to offer different pricing structures. Our customers have the option to purchase a membership that allows them to access all the courses that are available or purchase courses a la carte."

NOORDWIJK, The Netherlands, December 22, 2010/PRNewswire/ -- What if monitoring your heart rate were as easy as listening to music
while you jog? Thanks to advances in space technology, an iPhone will soon be
able to do double duty: keep you in tune with your favourite artists and your
vital signs.
With the support of ESA's Technology Transfer Programme (ESA TTP), Swiss
company CSEM created the final prototype for their Pulsear device this year.
A tiny unit embedded in a regular earphone uses infrared signals to see how
fast your heart is beating. It sends infrared signals through the tissues in
your ear. A tiny photo diode records the results and sends the information
via the earphone wires to a device that plugs into your phone.
The result is an accurate reading of your heart rate, without the
irritation of wearing a chest belt.
"Lots of people listen to music while they exercise and lots of people
find the belts uncomfortable," said CSEM's Dr Andrea Ridolfi, "so we thought
it made sense to measure heart rate through the ear."
Solution thanks to space-tech
Earlier attempts by CSEM to monitor heart rate using earphones were not
satisfactory, said Dr Ridolfi, because the available technology was not
sophisticated enough. But that was before CSEM developed a complex chest
sensor for measuring astronauts' blood oxygen levels for ESA's Long Term
Medical Survey system. "Once we were done," said Dr Ridolfi, "we said, 'let's
recycle this'."
With a grant from the ESA TTP's 'Technology Transfer Demonstrator'
initiative, CSEM created the prototype. The initiative supports development
of new hardware and software to bridge the gap between the space technology
and its terrestrial use.
An iPhone application shows your heart rate over time onscreen and
compares, say, today's jog with last week's. Subjects who tested the app
during their fitness training rated the device highly. While the current
prototype measures only heart rate, future versions could easily be adapted
to measure additional vital signs such as blood oxygen levels. This would
open up a number of medical applications.
"Technology transfer from space has a huge potential to spur innovation
in areas you wouldn't expect to find space-tech", explains Frank M.
Salzgeber, Head of ESA TTP. "ESA TTP wants to help European industry to apply
sophisticated space solutions to their markets."
SYNC AppLink Now Available as Free Download; Ford Fiesta Owners First With Voice Control of Apps
DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 22, 2010 /PRNewswire/ --
-- SYNC® AppLink, the industry-first software application that gives SYNC
users hands-free voice control of their smartphone apps, is now
available as a free download for 2011 Ford Fiesta owners at http://www.syncmyride.com
-- Ford announces that Apple iPhone will be compatible with AppLink, along
with initially announced BlackBerry by RIM and Android-based smartphones
-- Pandora internet radio, Stitcher news radio and OpenBeak are the first
SYNC-enabled mobile apps, some of which can be downloaded today from
Android Market and BlackBerry App World, and soon from Apple App Store
-- SYNC AppLink comes first to 2011 Ford Fiesta owners, with more
SYNC-equipped vehicles soon to follow
More than 14,000 owners of SYNC®-equipped Ford Fiesta vehicles can start celebrating the holidays now by treating themselves to the gift of AppLink, a free software program that gives SYNC users voice control of apps stored on their smartphone.
The industry-first capability puts Ford out front in the race to integrate smartphone apps into the car. The AppLink download for Fiesta owners went live today on the SYNC owner website, http://www.syncmyride.com.
"More and more drivers are using their devices and their apps while in the car," said Doug VanDagens, director of Ford Connected Services. "With AppLink, SYNC is a smarter solution for these drivers who choose to use these apps while driving - making it the only connectivity system available that can extend app functionality to the car using both voice and steering wheel controls."
Ford is also announcing a surprise new member to the AppLink family: the Apple iPhone. The popular smartphone makes for a powerful addition, and will be joining Android and BlackBerry smartphones as compatible devices with the software that allows apps to be controlled through the SYNC voice recognition system - a smarter alternative to manually controlling apps while driving.
Recent studies indicate 46 percent of adult smartphone users have apps on their phones and 36 percent of those admit to using those apps while commuting. Moreover, the 2010 study "Staying Connected on the Go: A Look at In-Vehicle Smartphone Integration Systems" conducted by the Consumer Electronics Association reports that 55 percent of smartphone owners prefer voice commands as their user interface for in-car smartphone integration, making the business case for SYNC and AppLink even more compelling.
"SYNC and AppLink work hand-in-hand to answer consumer demand for safer, smarter control of smartphones while in the car," said VanDagens. "Ford has worked hard to be a step ahead or at least in step with the speed of the consumer electronics market, and to leverage the technologies, features and services we know our customers want to be connected to while driving."
Easy downloading
2011 SYNC-equipped Ford Fiesta owners need to log in to their account on http://www.syncmyride.com to access the free AppLink download in the Update & Customize section.
As with any typical download, the AppLink software can be stored on a USB memory stick, and then inserted and uploaded to the vehicle via the SYNC system's USB port. In-car installation takes less than 10 minutes.
The first SYNC-enabled apps to market are Pandora internet radio, Stitcher news radio and OpenBeak for listening to Twitter posts. Once the AppLink upload is complete, customers can then visit their phones' respective app store to download the latest SYNC-enabled Pandora, Stitcher or OpenBeak app to their smartphone as they would any other app.
Current availability of SYNC-enabled apps:
-- Pandora
-- Apple iPhone: Coming early 2011
-- Android: Available now (V1.5.3 or higher)
-- BlackBerry: Available now (Version 1.1.6 or higher)
-- Stitcher
-- Apple iPhone: Coming early 2011
-- Android: Coming early 2011
-- BlackBerry: Late availability
-- OpenBeak
-- BlackBerry: Available now from http://m.openbeak.com and soon in
Blackberry App World (Version 1.4 or higher)
Seamless voice control
AppLink makes the connection between app and SYNC fairly seamless and simple, using Bluetooth streaming on paired Android and BlackBerry smartphones and the USB port for a connected Apple iPhone.
To access a mobile app with a SYNC-paired phone, the user simply has to press the VOICE button on the steering wheel and say the command, "Mobile applications," followed by the name of the app he or she would like to launch.
Once linked to Pandora, SYNC users can access their favorite personalized radio features, including creating and choosing stations, bookmarking songs for purchase, and giving songs a thumbs up/down all through voice. Command structure is intuitive and simple: "Play station classic rock radio," "Bookmark song," "Thumbs up" or "Thumbs down."
"Where before users would pick up their phone, taking their eyes off the road and hands off the steering wheel while driving to select a station and hit play, AppLink makes all of that functionality available through voice control, just like managing AM and FM radio or your MP3 player through SYNC," said Julius Marchwicki, SYNC product manager.
Similar voice command pathways and functionality exist for the Stitcher and OpenBeak apps. With Stitcher, for example, you can say the command, "Play station news" to listen to your favorite news radio or "Play station sports" to hear on-demand sports programming. Other popular Stitcher features such as skip station, thumbs up/down and "Add to favorites" are also available via voice.
Through the OpenBeak app, drivers can simply say the SYNC command, "Read timeline." In seconds, their feed is read aloud using the SYNC text-to-speech engine - a very similar experience to listening to talk radio.
Additional SYNC-enabled apps and smartphone integrations are coming soon, said Marchwicki. AppLink will also be introduced on other SYNC-equipped new model vehicles in 2011.
Ford will feature demos of AppLink at the Pepcom Digital Experience media event in Las Vegas on Jan. 5, 2011, and then at the 2011 International CES consumer technology trade show in Las Vegas between Jan. 6 and Jan. 9, 2011.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 21, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- The Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday (Dec. 21) approved rules dealing with the issue of net neutrality. The following statement should be attributed to Tom Tauke, Verizon executive vice president of public affairs, policy and communications:
"Verizon has long been committed to the goal of an open and vibrant Internet. We have invested tens of billions of dollars building innovative and dynamic wireline and wireless broadband networks that provide abundant capacity to our customers. We are also the only major Internet service provider that has publicly embraced openness obligations for both its wireline and wireless broadband Internet access services. We do this because we believe this is good for our customers and good for our business.
"Although we share with the FCC the overarching goals of an open Internet, we are deeply concerned by today's 3-2 decision. The FCC's majority breaks with years of bipartisan communications policies that recognized that Internet innovation and investment - and the jobs they create - thrive without government intervention. There is no doubt that the policies put in place by the Clinton Administration and the Bush Administration to jumpstart innovation and the spread of broadband worked. As a result, America's broadband and Internet marketplace is intensely competitive and an engine of economic growth, job creation and multibillion-dollar investment. Today's decision, however, unnecessarily departs from these successful policies.
"While it will take some time for us to analyze the FCC's rules and the order once they are released, the FCC's decision apparently reaches far beyond the net neutrality rules it announced today. Based on today's announcement, the FCC appears to assert broad authority for sweeping new regulation of broadband wireline and wireless networks and the Internet itself. This assertion of authority without solid statutory underpinnings will yield continued uncertainty for industry, innovators, and investors. In the long run, that is harmful to consumers and the nation.
"Verizon remains committed to preserving an open Internet and meeting the needs of our customers. We will continue to work constructively with the FCC and the Congress on these issues."

Mobile Calendar Management, Appointment Reminder, GPS Technology Wrapped Into New OnTime Application
Ripple Mobile's OnTime mobile calendar app sets new standard among time management tools
DUBLIN, Ohio, Dec. 21, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Imagine a mobile calendar application that runs in the background of an existing computer-based calendar program to help increase productivity, keep the sales force on time for appointments, and bolster a user's standing with friends and family. Ohio-based Ripple Mobile believes it's possible. By leveraging its productivity software, the company developed OnTime, a mobile application launched today making it easier for people to manage their calendar and busy, hectic lives.
"We know timeliness, personally and professionally, has a direct impact on a person's reputation," said Kevin Miller, president and co-founder of Ripple Mobile LLC, a technology innovation firm that powers and creates secure, technology-driven applications for mobile devices. "We believe with the OnTime application, users will never be late to business meetings or important appointments again."
According to Miller, what makes OnTime different from other reminder services is the mobile calendar application's location-based capabilities, allowing users to determine time and distance from any location in real time.
"OnTime runs in the background of users' smartphones," said Miller. "By determining their location, OnTime provides timely appointment reminders to ensure they get to appointments, events and meetings on time." OnTime is secure and has minimal impact on battery life.
OnTime syncs with all existing computer-based calendars and enhances how users already organize their life and task lists. The patent-pending mobile application provides many features, including adjustable turn-by-turn directions, phone-based GPS capabilities, and social media connectivity. It even provides real-time traffic analysis, notifying a user's next appointment if they are running late.
"OnTime helps busy people by bundling multiple productivity software tools into a single app," said Miller. "And because it works with their existing calendar, there's no new software to learn or buy."
As 2010 winds down and New Year's resolutions ramp up, OnTime is launching at the right time. Research shows of all resolutions people make only half will stay committed after six months and less than 10 percent after a year. Managing stress and time is consistently among the top 10 list of resolutions, and according to healthfinder.gov, common causes of short-term stress are having too much to do with little time and getting lost.
Early adopters of OnTime can purchase the app for $1.99 until April 1, 2011, and for $4.99 thereafter.

Avatron® Software's Print Sharing App Lets iPad, iPhone and iPod touch Users Print Wirelessly to Any Mac- or Linux-Connected Printer
Avatron's Latest App, Just $2.99 Via Apple App Store, Gives Mac Users Shared Printer Support Plus Advanced Features Including Print Preview, Dual-Sided Printing and More
PORTLAND, Ore., Dec. 21, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Avatron® Software, a leading developer of popular applications for the Apple IOS platform, announced the release of its latest app, Print Sharing, which allows iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users to print wirelessly from their mobile device. While other apps offer printing capabilities, Print Sharing is the most focused and powerful app of its kind.
"As people increasingly use their iPhone, iPod touch or iPad for work or other important daily tasks, the need to be able to print information has become clear," said Dave Howell, CEO of Avatron Software. "Print Sharing is the only app on the market that prints from your mobile device to a wide range of printers -- including shared and network-based printers. Print Sharing does all this and more, giving people most of the printing features they're used to at home or at the office."
With Print Sharing, owners can print wirelessly to any printer connected to a Mac that is printer sharing enabled, or to a Linux machine that is configured with CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System). In addition to its own printing capabilities, Print Sharing supports Apple's AirPrint, allowing users to print wirelessly to any of a list of select HP printers directly, whether or not they are connected to a PC. The full list of HP printers supported by AirPrint can be found at http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/airprint.html.
Depending on the printer being used, Print Sharing delivers advanced printing settings such as dual-sided printing, toner density, special inks, watermarks and overlays, choice of paper trays, page order, finishing/binding. "Print preview" is available on all printers.
Print Sharing works with virtually any Apple app. In Mail, Safari or other apps, simply select a document, tap the "Open in Print Sharing" button, select the printer and print. Alternatively, you can select an image or plain text, and then choose Copy and launch Print Sharing. Print Sharing will automatically recognize that there is something on the pasteboard, letting the user print it.
"Print Sharing is the most streamlined printing application for Apple mobile devices on the market," Howell noted. "The large number of supported printers and the ability to print to shared printers makes the app totally unique."
Print Sharing is available now for just $2.99 in the App Store. Within its first week of being released, Print Sharing was already one of the top-grossing paid iPad Utility apps. The product is part of Avatron's highly acclaimed family of productivity apps for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad that includes Air Display, Air Sharing Pro and Air Sharing HD. Winter Trend: iPhone app "NoseDial" is Useful & Funny
MUNICH, December 21, 2010/PRNewswire/ -- The "NoseDial" app ( http://itun.es/iF82yz ) solves a typical
winter problem: the iPhone display doesn't respond when touched with gloved
hands. With the $ 0.99 "NoseDial" app you can now navigate and dial easily
and conveniently with your nose.
A fun way to solve a real problem. "The iPhone display reacts
to every touch. Unless, that is, you happen to be wearing gloves. Then you
first have to remove your warming glove in order to make calls." Tobias
Buhmann, who developed the app with his team, knows this very well. In order
to save the costs of buying expensive special gloves or styluses, the agency
instead programmed the solution for the nose. "This has got to be the first
app to solve a real problem in a fun way!" says Buhmann.
Nasally ergonomic and stylish. "NoseDial" has been optimized
for operation by glove and nose. So, for instance, you can just tilt the
iPhone to navigate through contacts added to the app. The own programmed
sleep mode ensures that you can bypass Apple's "unlocking" slider. The
requirements of every type of nose and the agility levels of different people
are taken into account by the fact that you can individually adjust the size
of the dialing buttons (the button size automatically defines the number of
contacts shown per screen). In addition, you can define different background
styles for the dial buttons. As "NoseDial" also displays contact photos, you
get, along with the useful "dial with gloves on" feature, an attractive,
individually adaptable favorites list. The app is now available for $ 0.99
from the apple app store.

New Document Provides Industry-Standard Framework for Serving the 30% of Consumers Who Say They're Interested in Mobile Coupons
NEW YORK, LONDON, SINGAPORE and SAO PAULO, Dec. 21, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- The MMA (Mobile Marketing Association) (http://www.mmaglobal.com) today published "Guidelines and Best Practices in Mobile Price Promotions." Created by the MMA's Mobile Couponing Committee, the document is designed to provide marketers, merchants, wireless carriers and other ecosystem members with an industry-standard framework for using mobile coupons and rebates to increase sales and promote consumer loyalty.
Nearly 30 percent of U.S. consumers are interested in mobile coupons, according to a recent joint study by the MMA and Synovate, its official research partner. Mobile coupons are one type of Mobile Price Promotion, which the MMA defines as "electronic coupons or rebates that traverse the full redemption process without the requirement for conversion into a paper or other hard-copy format."
Mobile Price Promotions are distributed, discovered and redeemed through a variety of mobile technologies, including SMS, MMS, Mobile Applications, Mobile Web, Bluetooth, NFC and 1D/2D barcode scanning. "Guidelines and Best Practices in Mobile Price Promotions" provides a concise overview of these channels, as well as the key considerations for developing and executing these types of campaigns:
-- The five stages of mobile price promotions, such as the ways that
consumers can discover and redeem coupons and rebates.
-- General best practices and principles, including transparency, good
taste, privacy, opt-in/opt-out and government laws, rules and
regulations.
-- Campaign-specific best practices and principles, such as those involving
contests, food, pharmaceuticals and alcohol.
-- Tips for designing coupons, using the word "free" and creating notices
such as terms and conditions.
"Our recent study with Synovate shows that consumer interest in mobile coupons is high and growing, giving brands, merchants and marketers a powerful new opportunity to establish and maintain relationships with consumers," said Greg Stuart, CEO of the MMA. "The MMA created 'Guidelines and Best Practices in Mobile Price Promotions' to give the ecosystem an industry-standard framework for capitalizing on that opportunity while protecting the consumer experience."
Chaired by Mobile Dreams Factory, the MMA's Mobile Couponing Committee includes Cellfire, Inmar, Infinian and Verizon Wireless.
For more information about "Guidelines and Best Practices in Mobile Price Promotions," visit http://mmaglobal.com/mobilecouponguidelines.pdf . In addition, the public is encouraged to provide feedback by January 28, 2011 by sending comments to committees@mmaglobal.com.
