Microsoft attacks Linux on the Supercomputer front

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on May 31, 2004 at 5:38:14 PM
Microsoft is making a Windows for supercomputers. Windows HPC is made for supercomputing.

Quote

Now Microsoft has begun its response, forming its High Performance Computing team and planning a new OS version called Windows Server HPC Edition. Kyril Faenov is director of the effort, and Microsoft is hiring new managers, programmers, testers and others.

Well, if you haven't seen the Cebit coverage: »http://www.aselabs.com/articles.php?id=127 I also have a review coming up this week. Most likely On Wed.

Pimprig reviews the latest Asetek Watercooling.

Quote

Obviously not satisfied with the less than stunning performance of the half-moon Waterchill, Asetek borrowed a design from a proven winner, the Little River White Water. (Currently being produced by Dtek) Simply put, the Antarctica is a White Water clone. It’s not the first, Logic Cooling’s blocks are based on the White Water design, and so are the popular Danger Den RBX and the TDX as well as many others. And it won’t be the last. It’s a cost-effective design that has proven to work very well.

Foxconn 865 @ OCIA.

Quote

First, I like how all of the cables coming off of this board will be to one side, the front. The Floppy, ATX Power, both IDE, and even the PWR/RST/SPKR cables will all run right off the front of the board without covering up other components. The AGP slot also features an AGP retention clip. While almost all AGP cards are designed for this, most manufacturers leave it off of the motherboard. Also, even though this is a small form factor, Foxconn still managed to squeeze in three PCI slots.

Frostytech has a Verax Heatsink.

Quote

Frostytech has reviewed several of Verax GmbH's ultra-quiet heatsinks in the past, and while the heatsink and fan have remained pretty much identical throughout, the company always manages to mix it up a little. The Verax CAIRdB fan design is unarguably one of the most revolutionary on the market, though it can really be a struggle to get acclimated with the when moving from traditional vaneaxial fans. As always, Verax place their focus on quiet, then cooling... I'd expect the newly released Intel Pentium 4 (willamette) / Socket 603/604 Xeon Verax P17CuX heatsink to be a little on the warm side when it comes to testing. So far though, the Verax heatsinks always manage to keep the test system within reasonable levels, all the while with virtually no noise. The P17CuX heatsink breaks away from Verax's past flirtation with CGDS technology, and instead employs a massive copper plate bolted to the base of their signature aluminum extrusion. A thin la! yer of common white silicon thermal compound fills out the voids between the two surfaces, but other than that, it's a pretty low-tech add-on.

I just posted my Cebit article. »http://www.aselabs.com/articles.php?id=127 Check it out.

Hexus has a MSI K8N Neo on the bench.

Quote

We just need a revised BIOS that allows the enthusiast really push the board to the limit. The AGP/PCI lock is in place but it's of questionable value when multiplier support is broken. As it stands, it's a damn fast board at or near-default speeds.

Albatron FX5700P @ VL.

Quote

This card is what we would classify as an entry model (and given NVIDIA's current product structure, this seems to be their idea also), and compared to both last year's entry and mid-range offerings, the FX5200 and FX5600 respectively, the Albatron FX5700P Turbo will run circles around them.

My Cebit article will be up later today. I already uploaded the pictures.

EPIA M-2 12000 @ EPIACenter.

Quote

The VIA EPIA MII-12000 is the same as the EPIA MII-10000, except for two small changes, the 1GHz Nehemiah CPU has been replaced with a 1.2GHz C5P version of the Nehemiah CPU, and the Padlock security system has been updated to provide additional security features..

Corsair XL memory @ Legitreviews.

Quote

It seems that Corsair has been developing a new line of memory for their successful XMS Series of memory! They have managed to keep it a secret up until today! The new series of memory is going to be called Corsair XMS-XL.
The reason they kept the new product on the down low is because of the specifications that the memory is coming out with: 2-2-2-5 memory timings!

SuperTalent Memory cooler @ 3DX.

Quote

Today 3DXtreme has the pleasure of reviewing the Super Talent Memory Module Cooler. A lot of time and energy gets spent nowadays on cooling your CPU, Chipset or Video card but it can be equally important to make sure that your RAM stays cool. When overclocking the enthusiast has a tendency of increasing RAM voltage for stability but this has the added effect of raising the current levels and thus the temperature of the RAM. Super Talent has developed this cooling solution for just such applications. Let’s have a look at this product a little closer and see if it delivers

Albatron FX5700P @ PCStats.

Quote

There's good reason for this, namely that Albatron has taken it upon themselves to produce some of the best overclocking videocards we've ever tested. Even their mainstream graphics cards tend to have a higher level of "excitement" than most other brands on the market. I guess it's just the "Albatron" touch... In this review, PCStats is taking the Albatron GeForceFX 5700P Turbo videocard for a spin around the block. We'll be looking to see if this blue 8X AGP card lives up to expectations. Will the FX5700P Turbo blast out pixels and jaw-droping FPS, or just putter along like an old Amiga? Feel free to jump ahead to the benchmarks, or sit back and relax as we take you though the features of this $150USD FX5700-based card.

Abit KV8 Max3 @ Tweaknews.

Quote

The ABIT KV8-MAX3 is indeed a hell of a board, and it did perform very well during testing. The OTES system has proven itself to be a very good cooling solution for overclockers, and the µGuru provides a user-friendly interface to monitor and administer your system. From the 6 SATA ports to the 4x RAID support, this board is built to grow with your 64bit system.

Albatron FX5700P @ RBMods.
Tonite will be the first time we will look at a FX5700 card. We will compare it to some similar cards such as 9600XT, FX5600, etc... This will be interesting as we will compare it to so many cards and benchmark them to get a mid-range card winner. Oh yeah...I forgot; we will also test some overclocking Smile[/QUOTE:108569128

I'll be posting my Cebit findings tonight.

Data backup @ ER.

Quote

You do have an up-to-date backup, don't you? You don't? Well don't wait until you lose your data to learn this important lesson. Make backing up painless with CoolMax’s XTREME FILES.

Danger Den P4 RBX @ Madshrimps.

Quote

Danger Den's RBX Power kit does exactly what it promises, it gives the end-user the best water cooling gear out there, all components are of high quality and the performance is high even when running the pump and fan at lower voltages.

Data backup @ CI.

Quote

Data is becoming increasingly important in today's world now that almost everything is stored on your computer. While backing up to Floppy, CD, or DVD are options for those that don't have much data to back up, costly solutions like tape backup or mirrored raid arrays are the only solutions for those that have large amounts of data that need to be saved. The HD Guard Pro from eksitdata is an alternative solution to keeping your hard drive safe, and it won't break your wallet either. Instead of storing a complete backup of your data, the HD Guard Pro records only the small changes to your hard drive and claims it can record up to 12GB in only 1.33MB of data.

VL Shows how to mod the Muvo2.

Quote

A quick look shows us that 256MB MP3 players run from $120 to $200. The quality will be a crapshoot, but several reviews of the MuVo 2 have been quite positive regarding sound quality. Considering I picked up the kit for $40, and added a 50$ 256MB CF card, this was quite a bargain. If you have access to a larger CF card, even better.

Imon Universal Remote @ BigBruin.
Having one controller be able to control Windows, Internet Explorer, DVDs, MP3s, and almost any multimedia program and do all these flawlessly is almost as rare as pure Unobtanium… Trying to integrate a PC into your home theater system can be a very tough thing to do. Controlling everything with one remote control is even tougher. The iMon comes as close as any device I have ever seen.[/QUOTE:108559757

Part 4 of Watercooling @ OCWizard.

Quote

Part IV of the Watercooling Introduction series is regarding the selection of appropriate tubing for your system. Tubing configuration, sizing, material selection and recommended brand names shall all be discussed during the course of this article.

XGI Volari Duo @ Hexus.

Quote

It's hard to recommend XGI's top card with the current driver set. The company needs to bolster image quality before concentrating on all-out performance, really. A promising product that's severly let down by inadequate image quality.

Nikao Spider case @ MTB.

Quote

One of the unique design aspects of the Nikao Spider Mid-Tower Case is the front bezel that will remind consumers of the "Spiderman" comic book character. The front bezel features a unique web pattern that is replicated from the top portion to the bottom. The pattern consists of silver and red plastic pieces sealed with a plastic overlay. In the center of the front bezel design; Nikao has included a circular mounted LCD temperature display. The temperature display allows consumers to monitor the temperature of system components as well as set alarm temperature thresholds. To the left and right of the LCD display is the location for the Power and Reset buttons.

OCZ PC3500 @ PCStats.

Quote

When Intel introduced the i865PE/i875P chipsets over a year ago, the Pentium 4 overclocking changed, but many enthusiasts seem to have forgotten that the rules stayed the same. Latency is just as important as bandwidth, for the average overclocker/gamer latency is actually more important! And so in this day and age, pretty much everyone reviewing high-speed memory, except us, has been praising the introduction of high speed DIMM's. Sure they let you go higher than ever before, but only at a very steep price.

Bytecc HotDrive 2.5'' HD Enclosure Reviewed @ HTR.

Bytecc's HotDrive 2.5" USB Drive Enclosure.  It's a sturdy little aluminum box which even the most inexperienced computer user can turn into a very handy external drive for your home or office.  With support of up to an 80 GB sized drive you should not be left wanting for space.

Fun day yesterday. Reviews will start flowing next month. We are taking a month off Wink.

Mushkin 1GB PC4000 @ Extremereviews.

Quote

RAM is one of the most easily upgradeable parts inside a computer, but even though it may be easy to upgrade, it isn’t as easy to choose the best RAM for your system. To help you make that decision, we will be investigating the Mushkin 1GB Dual Pack PC4000 DDR RAM to see if it stands out amongst the rest.

MSI FX5700U @ Designtechnica.

Quote

There are a couple reasons why the VT2DR256 stands out among other Geforce FX 5700 cards. The dual DVI capability is an awesome feature to have, and the included software is probably one of the best packages we have seen come with a card in this price range. If you are looking for the best gaming card in this price range, we recommend that you check out ATI’s Radeon 9600XT. You can find the 9600XT for about $30 dollars cheaper than the MSI VT2DR256 and its gaming performance is much better.

SiS 755 (Athlon 64) @ HCW.

Quote

While I can almost guarantee that you are using or have used a Foxconn product at some time, you probably wouldn't know it. For 20 years or so, they have been making the various connectors and cables that companies such as Abit or Gigabyte would use on their motherboards.

Happy Hour at Hooters Today!

Acousti Products AcoustiPack Standard Soundproofing Kit @ Bigbruin.

Quote

The AcoustiPack soundproofing kit definitely helps Acousti Products achieve their goal of providing the “ultimate noise reduction solutions for the computer industry”. The noise reduction achieved on my already quiet system was impressive, and I am confident that a louder system would benefit even more from the installation of this kit.

VIA K8T800 @ AMDZone.

Quote

Since our P5A we have been Asus fans. Yes, that is some time ago. We are always excited to see a new Asus board delivered to the Zone. Their latest is the Socket 939 VIA K8T800 Pro based A8V Deluxe that miraculously showed up shortly after our KT8T800 Pro preview stated waiting till a 939 comparison to the nForce 3 250 was needed before we concluded which was our favorite slice of silicon to secure you CPU next to. We can't offer a review with 939 benchmarks as of yet, and instead offer this tantalizing first look.

LCDs and refresh rates @ Designtechnica.

Quote

Whether you’re in the market to replace the hulking CRT that is making your desk sag or you’re planning on purchasing a laptop, some knowledge of LCD technology will help you make a better decision. Unfortunately, the contradiction of today’s Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) technology is that bigger often means smaller. And as a result, consumers who think a bigger screen will be easier on their eyes are often disappointed in their purchase.

MSI MegaPC 180 @ RBMods.

Quote

Tonite we will look into a barebone from MSI. We got a sample of their Mega180 AMD Xp system. This might be something for those that can't afford a AMD64 system yet. We will benchmark and see what features this small barebone really has. I think this already looks like a nice computer but we have to take a closer look.

ClearPC Briefcase @ Tweaknews.

Quote

Well, I went in slightly skeptical, not wanting to be disappointed, and I was blown away. This case is fantastic. I've left it running for hours, checking on it periodically to see what the temperature inside the case is, and it always remained cool. Even the acrylic felt cool to the touch. This design is superb.

Alpha vs. Thermaltake vs. Cooler Master @ ClubOC.
Not too long ago when the Pentium 4 was released it was suffice to say that most overclockers agreed that it wasn't the hottest running processor. Well times have changed, and with three FSB changes and numerous stepping changes the Pentium 4 is now a hot running processor. This is especially the case with the newer Prescott cores, which so far is Intel's newest processor offering. one of the newest fads, as far as air-cooling is concerned, is to cool your processor using a heatpipe method. Today, at ClubOC we have a veteran in the ring along with two newer designs that we are sure will do the overclocking job rather nicely.[/QUOTE:108508

DFI Lanparty 875P @ HTR.

Quote

DFI's LanParty motherboards have become well known through out the enthusiast's community and the value packed accessories that are included in each motherboard hasn't hurt their cause either. Today we are taking a look at the LanParty PRO875B, which we found after our testing to be just about as much motherboard as anyone person could possibly ask for.

MSI K8N Neo FIS2R @ PCStats.

Quote

Epox EP-4PDA5+ i865PE Springdale Motherboard Review @ Tweaknews.net.

Today I will be reviewing Epox's latest edition to their i865PE (Springdale) based motherboards. The EP-4PDA5+ is not your everyday Springdale motherboard. Although it is not targeted towards the enthusiast market, you will see in the upcoming pages that if you didn't know what chipset this motherboard was powered by, you would swear it was a Canterwood.

VIA K8T800 with FX53 @ AMDZone.

Quote

Spring 2004 is heating up with new AMD64 chipsets from both VIA and Nvidia. Almost simultaneously we have seen samples of the VIA K8T800 Pro (not K8T800A) and the Nvidia nForce 2 250GB. These new chipsets up the performance and feature stakes for AMD's flagship CPU line. In today's article we will look at Socket 940 chipset performance. It is true that Socket 939 is around the corner, but that doesn't mean 940 is dead. 940 will live up with Opteron to retain the registered memory support server and workstation platforms need. The first new chipset in socket 940 format we have seen is the VIA K8T800 Pro demo board. Let's take a quick look at this board.

Tired... I'm awaiting a few things to arrive at my doorstep to begin the review onslaught.

Intel 915 Chipset @ tbreak.

Quote

The new Intel 915+ICH6 chipset supporting the upcoming Socket 755 is scheduled to debut in about a month’s time. Some information about this chipset has been making rounds on the Internet, like the lack of an AGP interface and Win 9X drivers. Today, we try to put together different pieces of information we have on this chipset- some of the technologies that this chipset will bring with itself. We know that Intel will offer this chipset in discreet as we well as their “G” flavor- with the integrated Intel Extreme Graphics 3 display technology.

X-turbine case @ Pimprig.

Quote

I have a case here that will hit almost every case modders palate. The Limited Edition X-Turbine Skull Case from Xoxide. What Xoxide has done here is take their popular X-Turbine case and made it better. The X-Turbine is a great case, with 6 fans and a lot of windows, what more could they do? They applied a theme to it, a skull theme to be exact. Pay attention boys and girls, let the modding begin.

Silverstone TJ-03 @ AMDReview.

Quote

I find the Silverstone Nimiz case to be a spectacular one! What's there not to like? The case is anodized, Type II, and retains all the best qualities of an aluminum case. Aluminum provides integrity similar to a steel case, without the extra weight, and surprisingly, the Nimiz was so light with the system specifications listed above, I nearly fell over onto my back when I lifted the system off the floor. Never have I lifted such a computer that weighed so little. At one time, when I owned a Lian Li PC-60, that case was just as heavy as a steel enclosure. I love every aspect of the Nimiz case not only were there no sharp edges in the inside of the case but also its size. This case is huge, and there was plenty of room, unlike the Sonata case. If I were to choose purchasing between the two I would go for the Nimiz because it rivals the Sonata in terms of quietness. The Nimiz does not even specialize in silence, but maintains that. The only drawback between these two is the price.

Tek Panel 300 @ Designtechnica.

Quote

With configurations costing upwards of $8,000, this system may be out of reach for most consumers. But taking all of the high-end components and custom features into account, the price is quite reasonable.

Hexus shows the MXM from nVidia.

Quote

NVIDIA's biggest chance of success with MXM comes from the Go variant of their new GeForce 6 series of GPUs. Strong performance and a solution based around it that's attractive to ODMs (cost and support wise), taking away some of the shine from ATI and M2x, their next-generation FLEXFIT (ATI's own V-MAP style spec for pin-compatible GPU replacement) PCI-Express parts, will help drive acceptance of MXM into the mobile space.

Creating Shell Icons @ IANAG.

Quote

A shell icon is sort of like a file type (ex: .doc, .txt .bmp etc) but it is made for a system feature. For example, the recycle bin. The recycle bin, unlike allot of your desktop icons, is not a shortcut. It is a shell icon. "My documents", "my computer" , "internet exploder" are other shell icons.

Silentek Watercooling @ Gurureview.

Quote

With newer, more powerful processors being released every few months, more people are looking to push their existing CPUs to the limits through overclocking rather than shelling out more money. The problem is that with stock coolers, you usually can't push the CPU past it's stated speed, so you have to look at other means of cooling. The first thing you can do is to invest in a copper heatsink, this can lower your temperatures a fair bit, but for some people, this is not enough.

Forrester also increases its near-term estimate of lost jobs by 240,000 in its new report, projecting that a cumulative total of 830,000 positions will have moved offshore by 2005. The research reinforces earlier Forrester findings that were cited by Sen. John Kerry, before he became the all-but-official Democratic presidential nominee, in introducing legislation last year to regulate the call-center industry.

Happy Hour at Hooters Tomorrow! See you there Wink.

ClubOC.net has an Albatron FX5700 Ultra for review.

Quote

The video card market can really cause a lot of aggravation for the casual gamer that really enjoys playing the latest and greatest titles, but simply can not afford to keep up with the seemingly monthly release of new silicone. Considering a budget level video card does not necessarily mean that you'll be stuck with horrible performance at the expense of supporting the latest technologies. Albatron has added yet another FX5700 chipset video card to their mid-level line-up, with a price that rings in under $130 US. Given a little bit of Overclocking, performance can be increased even further to add longevity to your purchase decision.

Are you in the market for a new graphics card, but are baffled by all the different makes and models on the market? If so, we will help you sort through this clutter when we look at the PixelView Geforce FX 5900XT Golden Limited.

Radeon AIW 9600 @ Modsynergy.

Quote

ATI has been a strong presence in the multi-function market. Basically, a video card’s main function is to put on the screen visual code from the program – most importantly to many is to display games at an acceptable frame rate. But what about if you want to make your computer a home-theatre system? You could spend a thousand dollars on those retail systems running Windows XP Media Center Edition. But ATI has provided for a long time a different solution: the “All-In-Wonder” line of graphics cards. These cards allow you to do many things, from playing DVD’s, to watching and even recording television shows. Here at Modsynergy we got a chance to see what the ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 9600 128MB video card can do.

Celestica Radeon 9800XT @ ClubOC.

Quote

The ATi Radeon X800 series may very well be the best video cards money can buy right now, but what will happen to the cards that were the best just a couple weeks ago? As crazy as it sounds, those cards are now considered mid range. Normally, I almost never run right out and purchase a video card as soon as it is released. I usually wait and purchase that top end card when prices fall due to the next generation of video cards being released. Now is one of those times. We all know the Radeon 9800 series has been the champ for a long time now, so the best of the best would be the Radeon 9800XT series.

Not much happening this weekend. Getting killed at work. On Sunday I plan to sit down at the end of the day and have a drink... then pass out.

The Tech Zone has booth babe coverage from E3. Damn, I got to go to E3.

Day 2 of our E3 booth babe hunt brings us the E3 Access Babes, the Dead or Alive girls, nVidia babes, Hooters girls, SRS Racing babes plus a whole lot more!

Thermaltake's Silent Tower @ TechTastic.ca

Quote

With so many manufacturers producing heatsink/fan combos nowadays, one gets the impression that a lot of copycat designing is happening instead of innovation. That is until recently, as Thermaltake has released there newest creation the Silent Tower. This new HSF is compatible with all cpu types, has heatpipes, and an option for a Dual Fan Setup. Not to mention it's also one of the largest HSF's i've come across.

TT Giant 3 @ ClubOC.

Quote

As GPUs become faster and hotter, cooling has become a real problem. One solution is the sandwich cooler that uses heatpipe technology. One such cooler is the Giant III from Thermaltake. This baby is a no-holds-bared solution to cooling your graphics card. As the names suggests, the Giant III is GIANT. Due to it's size, it may not be the best solution for everyone, but let's take a look at this mega cooler and see if it's worth the Overclocker's time and money.

460W Tisonic @ ClubOC.

Quote

Within the last few weeks we've seen a huge amount of drama hit us in the video card sector. Both ATI and nVidia have debuted new cards that flat out cook. Scores of 10,000 pts on 3DMark 2003 are now a reality for the air-cooled crowd, and running full eye-candy is now something you can do at higher than 1024x768 resolution. Of course this power comes with a price, and even though both ATI and nVidia admit that their new cards use less power than their predecessor's, nVidia was rumored to need at the minimum a 460W power supply. Well, some of us out there are still using 300W, and if you are one of those people, and you're wanting to dwell into the insane world of 400fps in Q3, than you are going to need a new power supply. Luckily, we have a newcomer on the table today, and its hardly a budget unit, although it is very affordable, and once testing this PSU, we'll try and see if its advisable to shell out some cash for it. Lets take a look at this new company and what it has to offer us overclockers...

On the Nokia n-Gauge, we were delighted to see The Elder Scrolls Travels:
ShadowKey. Set in the famous Elder Scrolls series of role-playing games (Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind), this first-person role-playing game offers landscapes that reminded this reporter of the dozens of hours spent in the first title of the series (where the role-playing elements were a step beyond most of the competition, but the rich and complex world of intrigue for Daggerfall and Morrowind, as well as the refinements of the engine were not yet in) where combat was king. The graphics, even on the small screen (or perhaps, because of the small screen), were better than those remembered from Arena and even the Alpha version we saw was not crashing in the dungeons (an infrequent, but not unlikely problem in the first game).

Changing your start menu @ OCHQ.

Quote

Now updated for use with SP2. For those of us who have been hearing about all the Big Brother characteristics of Windows XP, it is glad to hear the end user still has some control. Ever since Windows 95 we have all been staring at the word “Start” in the corner of our monitors. It made sense at first, but now it almost seems annoying. How many of you actually use the start menu every time you want to start something?

ECS 755-A2 @ tbreak.

Quote

ECS has been producing boards based on SiS chipsets for the longest time. What sets these motherboards apart is the bang you get for your buck. These boards are usually priced at a lower end and provide all the needed features onboard along with reasonable performance. The ECS 755-A2 pretty much falls into that category as well boasting the SiS 755/964 chipset for the AMD Athlon64 line of processors.

Hexus reviews an Athlon 64 laptop.

Quote

I'm left wanting for a better display, DDR400 SODIMMs, 802.11g, some slight keyboard tweaks and a nice rucksack to carry it around in. It looks good, it performs well, the bundle is excellent and you get 64-bit computing on the move. Battery life isn't as shocking as you'd think either.

They also have the Radeon X800 Pro.

Quote

It may pay to see what NVIDIA have to offer in the same price range and we'll be evaluating 6800GT performance in the near future, but in isolation against the ATI products that sit above and below it, the X800 PRO is highly recommended if you have the money to spend.

Extremereviews has a guide of boosting DSL speeds.

Quote

Now off to the fun part, what we will be doing is branching off a new cable directly from the telephone box outside, specifically for your DSL. This will prevent your modem from having to go through the house cabling; instead, it will go directly to the external phone connection outside. By doing this, the line quality will improve a great deal, especially if you live in an old house with old wiring. With an improved connection to the external phone line, your modem will get a much clearer signal, and therefore your internet connection speed should increase.

VL interviewed Intel.

The key thing in terms of the support is that overclocked CPUs are not covered by warranties. We have our processors are locked at their frequency, in terms of their multiplier. People of course are going out there and doing stuff with the voltages and FSB, and we know this but as always "do this at your own risk."

I'm expecting a few things to arrive soon for review, in the meantime you can sit and wait. Rude and I are planning some good stuff for a weekly thing.

At TWL, there is a review of a FIC K8T800.

Quote

Processing at 64 bit is currently thought of as the future brought to us in the here and now. AMD was the first to market with a consumer level serious 64 bit processor. Shortly after, FIC released an AMD 64 motherboard aimed at the mainstream market that would bring 64 bit computing to consumers at a price that was well below the competition.

Hexus reviews a jetway XP board.

Quote

With an onboard graphics core and decent performance from Athlon XP, the N2VIEW makes a lot more sense as a MagicTwin platform, compared to the PT800TWIN. Low cost processors, no need to initially purchase a compatible graphics card and low cost make things that bit more bearable.

Albatron Canterwood action over at PCStats.

What happens then to those consumers who don't want fully loaded motherboard? Why should they spend the extra money for features that aren't really needed? For example, my main PC has an IDE RAID controller, onboard 5.1 channel audio, IEEE 1394 and onboard CSA Gigabit LAN... but they all sit idle. They're nifty features to have, but if I could have gone with a motherboard without them for a lower price, I would have

First I'd like to thank Xoxide.com for supplying us with this marvelous Lian Li 6077 case...

Designtechnica reviews a Gateway Media center PC.

Quote

The FMC-901X is a great system for those wanting to try something new. Gateway was the first to incorporate a computer into the home theater with the introduction of their Destination series systems, and the FMC-901X shows how well this genre has evolved. The FMC-901X is a very powerful system capable of playing the best video games, editing home movies and watching television. The system design is clean and attractive and should look good in most home theater setups. Gateway can still improve upon the FMC-901X by adding quieter cooling, integrating WiFi and adding more internal expansion. But as far as Media Center PC’s go in the mainstream computer market, the Gateway FMC-901X is a serious contender.

A Biostar IDEQ is reviewed at AMDZone.

We liked the look of the Biostar, and were happy that it provides space for two drives for easy RAID setup. We were happy to see Gigabit Ethernet, 6 channel audio, and the easy one step heatsink removal. It is also handy that the panels can be removed individually. The price is also a bit lower than the Shuttle.

Apple gets iTunes patent

Apple has received a pantent for iTunes. The patent covers the UI I'm sure, plus other stuff. Patenting software is a joke.

Quote

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued Apple a patent for its media player software interface on May 4, along with several other features of the company's high-profile products. Other parts of the iTunes software, including the ability to stream songs over a network to another copy of the program, had been the subject of earlier patents.

Sony has Big Plans for Vaio

Poster: Aron Schatz

Sony is taking its Vaio brand name and extending it to almost every area of the market. Plans for PVR, iPod like devices and more are taking shape. I'm interested in the Type U in the article.

Quote

"Type U"--a machine that may be the world's smallest Windows XP-enabled PC. Despite its small contour--it's 167 millimeters wide, 108 millimeters tall and 26.4 millimeters deep--the tablet-like PC features Intel's ultra-low voltage Celeron M 900 MHz processor. It is designed to be manipulated with both hands, similar to some portable game devices. The device has a small LCD (5-inch SVGA), and it can be operated by stylus as well as by built-in buttons. A detachable keyboard is also an option. The device has 64MB video memory, allowing users to connect to a full-size display.

Quote

The Xice ExternalCool EC900/H Kit uses a unique design which is slightly different than traditional external water cooling units such as the Koolance EXOS or the Corsair HydroCool. The EC900 is a standalone unit that sits vertically when placed on a flat surface. The construction of the unit is very good consisting of an aluminum based frame covered with a black hard plastic exterior. On the top and bottom of the unit are a series of ventilation slots which aid in the passive cooling design.

Designtechnica reviews the Radeon AIW 9600XT. A solid mid range card with all the features.

Quote

On the graphics side, the processor used in the All-In-Wonder 9600XT is faster than comparably priced Nvidia video cards and should be able to handle most of today’s games as long as the games are configured for medium graphical settings. Priced at around $299, the All-In-Wonder 9600XT is a relatively new card and we expect its price to drop with the introduction of ATI’s next generation video cards. Otherwise, if you would like more graphical power, we would recommend upgrading to the All-In-Wonder 9800 which can be found for only $30 more.

Tweaknews reviews the same card.

Quote

The All in Wonder 9600XT brings a cost effective alternative to dropping another US$100 to buy the next highest readily available version which is the AIW 9800pro. You can't ignore the fact that this card brings an unbelievable amount of potential to an everyday computer. Instead of just using your computer to surf the web, game and catch up on your work, you can transform that ordinary work box into a complete multimedia center complete with countless audio/video inputs and outputs, a television, a FM radio and lets not forget a very capable gamer.
