Passover

Poster: Aron Schatz

By the way, I forgot to mention that Passover started on Monday night. If you see a Jewish person, wish him/her a happy Passover! And don't forget that this Sunday is Easter Sunday.

Speculation of Gmail

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on April 6, 2004 at 6:14:50 AM
The just announced Google Mail has some people up in arms already. Privacy concerns are all the rage today.

Quote

"Residual copies of e-mail may remain on our systems, even after you have deleted them from your mailbox or after the termination of your account," Google's Gmail says in its privacy and terms of use sections. Google will also scan users' e-mails in order to paste appropriate advertising into messages. It may also link together "cookies," which contain personal information, from both e-mail and Web use records.

Testing Einstein's Theory of Space and Time

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on April 6, 2004 at 6:11:28 AM
NASA is finally going to lauch a test device into orbit that will without a doubt prove or disproved the second major theory of Einstein. The theory states that a body's circular motion (spin in this case) is affected by the gravitational pull of other bodies.

Quote

If theory holds, the mass and rotation of the Earth, 397 miles below the probe, should throw the alignment of the spinning balls off kilter in subtle but measurable ways.

Read about how to keep your computer safe and secure
. I hope this article will spread, I can't stand to see people waste money on things that could be easily fixed for free.

Google Mail

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on April 1, 2004 at 5:27:48 PM
I don't know how true this is considering it is April 1st, but Google says it is going to start an email system to provide people with 1GB of mail space. The PR is here.

Quote

Gmail uses Google search technology to automatically organize and find messages. And because Gmail includes 1,000 megabytes of storage, a typical user won't ever have to worry about deleting mail. Everything just gets archived so it can be found again if needed.

There are other differences in the way Gmail provides access to your email. For example, Gmail automatically groups an email and the replies to it as a conversation. That means you always see a message in its proper context. And there are no pop-ups or banner ads in Gmail, just relevant text ads and links to related pages. Gmail's other distinctive features include a labeling system, a spam reporter and a system for filtering your mail as it comes into your inbox.

Safer Computing
The modern PC is one of the most versatile and useful tools around, and is an irreplaceable part of one's business. Unfortunately, as computers have become more and more commonplace, so have the security risks: viruses, spyware, spam, and the like are in full-force and are doing their best to bring your PC down and ruin your week. Gates says hardware will be free

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 30, 2004 at 4:55:45 PM
In ten years hardware will be free. So Windows will be the major price for a computer costing up to $600 or more to make up the cost. Chips and tangible items have a real world value to make. On the other hand, software is written once and copied again and again.

Quote

"Ten years out, in terms of actual hardware costs, you can almost think of hardware as being free--I'm not saying it will be absolutely free--but in terms of the power of the servers, the power of the network will not be a limiting factor,'' Gates said Monday at a symposium in San Diego, referring to networked computers and advances in the Internet's speed.

Apple to patent iPod Interface

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 29, 2004 at 9:48:19 PM
Apple wants to capitalize on the huge success of the iPod by makings its UI patented. Previous devices have all shared the same interface. Why Apple thinks its special is beyond me.

Quote

In a portable multimedia device, a method, apparatus, and system for providing user supplied configuration data are described. In one embodiment, a hierarchically ordered graphical user interface are provided. A first order, or home, interface provides a highest order of user selectable items each of which, when selected, results in an automatic transition to a lower order user interface associated with the selected item. In one of the described embodiments, the lower order interface includes other user selectable items associated with the previously selected item from the higher order user interface.

a la carte Cable?

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 29, 2004 at 9:44:26 PM
If you're sick of seeing the channels that you hate, and don't want to pay for, Congress has a solution for you. Cable a la carte. That's right. Soon it may be a law to allow you to pick the channels you want to pay for.

Quote

Under an a la carte system, top-rated cable channels such as USA Network would probably thrive because ratings suggest enough people would choose to buy it individually to make it worth a programmer's while. However, less-watched channels that serve distinct but smaller audiences, such as TechTV and BET, may not survive, because not enough viewers would pay for them. Under the current system, consumers effectively subsidize less-popular channels, which cable companies say provides diversity in the cable and satellite universe.

In case you didn't know, Comcast is in the final stages of buying TechTV, I don't think they'll go down that easily.

UN wants control over internet

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 26, 2004 at 5:30:27 PM
Could you imagine the UN having control over the internet. It is funny, I think it is fine in the current system right now.

Quote

Backing ICANN are groups such as the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the U.S. Commerce Department, which fear that greater U.N. involvement will unleash the world's most extensive bureaucracy on the Internet and stifle innovation online. In a paper distributed at the summit, the ICC took issue with the popular term Internet governance, saying it "implies that there is a need for the Internet to be governed in some way, a view that ICC does not support."

It seems that the UN, an organization that WE created (after WW2), is stifling everybody more and more. The UN is weak and unable to make descisions anymore.

Microsoft fined $613 Million by EU

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 25, 2004 at 6:11:27 PM
The EU has fined Microsoft $613 Million, but that's the tip of the iceburg. The fine is a slap on the wrist. The real pain comes from the other requirements. One of them is to unbundle Media Player from Windows. The other is to release documents so other server products can maintain interoperability with Windows. Pretty intense. Microsoft will appeal of course.

Now I do agree that $200-$300 for an Operating system is pretty crazy. The problem is, people will pay for it. With no immediate competition, Microsoft can charge whatever the market will pay for its products. Do not tell me that Linux is a viable option. It plainly is not. Have you ever tried to recently install or USE Linux? Let's face it, if Linux wants to start to widdle away at Microsoft's desktop market, they HAVE to make the interface easier to use. RPMs and stuff are great... but then the dependancies and stuff. In Windows... you double click an install program and that it. What do you think?

The fight on Spam!

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 22, 2004 at 4:16:57 PM
Some companies are making technologies that will help to fight spam. Of course this includes the need to check where an email is coming from to determine is the address is faked or not. I personally use SpamBayes, a bayesion spam filter. My spam is now 99% gone.

Quote

Yahoo has repeatedly discussed plans to support a proposed system, known as DomainKeys, for verifying the identity of an e-mail sender. AOL has recently begun testing a DNS-based system, formerly known as Sender Permitted From and recently renamed Sender Policy Framework (SPF). Microsoft, too, has developed its own system for identifying the origin of e-mail, called Caller ID for E-mail.

Google: Locally

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 17, 2004 at 6:27:54 PM
Your favorite search engine has just gotten better than ever. In an effort to gain more advert revenue, Google has released Google Local. You can try this new feature at Google's main site. Or at http://local.google.com It managed to find both of my parents stores just fine.

Quote

Mountain View, Calif.-based Google is giving prominence to local search at a time when it's one of the most hyped areas of development in the industry. Financial analysts and industry executives say geographically targeted search listings are prime real estate for local advertising, an estimated $12 billion annual business in the United States. In 2004, less than $50 million of that market will go toward ads related to local Net searches, but over time, the dollars will find their way to the virtual world, analysts say.
