Valkee Bright Light Headset Demonstrates Alleviation of Jet Lag Symptoms
HELSINKI, December 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
Placebo-Controlled, Double-Blind Field Study on Jet Lag Treatment Followed
by Development of New Smartphone App to Help Travelers Adjust Faster
The bright light headset maker Valkee announced the completion of a successful
clinical field study on alleviating jet lag symptoms of travelers after long haul flights.
The placebo-controlled double-blind study was the first successful clinical field study of
its kind with any medical device. The results suggest that the light treatment group
recovered from the typical experienced jet lag symptoms faster than the control group did.
Full results of the study are scheduled for publication in early 2015 in Aerospace
Medicine and Human Performance [http://www.asma.org/journal/asem-journal ]. The
peer-reviewed monthly journal published by the Aerospace Medical Association (AsMA) is the
most used and cited journal in its field and distributed to more than 80 nations. Prior to
2015 it has been called Aviation, Space and Environmental Medicine.
"This is the first ever randomized, placebo-controlled and double-blinded light
therapy study on alleviation of jet lag symptoms, and the results indicate that
transcranial bright light given through ear canals decreases symptoms of jet lag," said
MD, Ph.D. Jari Karhu, Medical Adviser at Valkee. "We look forward to further studies in
the area."
Following the study, Valkee has developed a smart phone app that helps optimize bright
light treatment, nutrition, exercise and sleep before, during and after long haul flights.
An easy-to-use instructions timeline and push notifications are based on user defined
flight times and routes. The free Valkee jet lag app is immediately available worldwide
outside of the European Union countries, and downloadable now in App Store for iPhone
users and in Google Play for Android users.
Valkee is proud to have worked closely with Finnair who place particular importance on
the health and wellness of their passengers during and after flight. Finnair originally
partnered with Valkee to test the product concept with the airline's business class
passengers on the Helsinki-Shanghai route in 2012. Finnair has also been the first airline
in the world to carry Valkee headsets in their duty free catalogue.
"We have been curious and open-minded about testing and supporting innovative
technology that travelers and our customers might find useful, especially if it could
increase passenger wellbeing," said Jarkko Konttinen, Vice President of Product and
Marketing at Finnair. "This is a very interesting study that tells more about Valkee's
light therapy for intercontinental travelers, and we are happy to offer Valkee's product
to our customers."
Finnair's Flight Surgeon recently cleared Valkee for use by the airline's pilots at
their discretion, while members of the cabin crew have already had an opportunity to test
Valkee headsets on long-haul flights over the past two years.
"We are grateful for Finnair's strong support. We are currently working on details
with several other travel retail channel partners to bring the Valkee 2 bright light
headsets for more travelers around the globe," said Pekka Somerto, Valkee CEO.
Valkee is available onboard Finnair, Singapore Airlines, KLM and Iberia, in addition
to local retailers in several countries in Europe, Japan and North America, and from the
Valkee global online store at http://www.valkee.com. More detailed information and
recent news are available at http://www.valkee.com.

The company will provide consumers with premium quality, hearing-healthy, contemporary designed on-ear and over-ear headphone monitors at disruptive prices. Puro Sound Labs introduces the BT2200, Bluetooth "Kid-friendly" headphones with built-in volume optimization. This is the first in a line of products that aim to deliver this unique experience and value.
The Puro Sound Labs BT2200 are Bluetooth headphones created specifically for kids and designed with the health and safety of a child as a priority. They will be the first ever and only studio-grade Bluetooth headphones on the market made especially for kids with volume limiting ear protection. Volume levels over 85 decibels (dB) have been known to cause hearing loss over time. Their unique headphone design protects children's ears, while delivering studio-grade sound. With hearing health and education in mind, Puro Sound has committed to donating a portion of every sale of all Puro Sound products through 2015 to the Hearing Health Foundation.
"Noise-induced hearing loss is 100% preventable; however prolonged exposure to sounds that are 85 decibels (dB) or above, such as loud music, is often the culprit. By placing an 85 dB volume limit on their headphones, Puro Sound is taking significant strides towards protecting children's hearing against premature hearing loss. We are excited to work together to achieve the same goal of both educating and providing consumers with hearing-friendly solutions," said Claire Schultz, CEO, Hearing Health Foundation. Puro Sound Labs headphones are designed with a unique frequency response curve called Puro Balanced Response®, designed to recreate the natural sound produced in a perfectly tuned listening room in the headphone listening experience. This helps to maximize the satisfaction of Healthy Ears® hearing protection.
Great care has gone into the design and materials used in the headphones. A soft and supple cushioning material and durable lightweight aluminum are used to make the headphones comfortable for young ears and to stand up to everyday use. Their design also attenuates over 82% of ambient noise, eliminating a need for higher volume limits. When combined, Puro's Balanced Response® Curve and the headphones' noise attenuation design, kids can enjoy their music with no need to exceed safe playback levels.
Parents will love them for their great value and hearing health while kids will love them for their comfort, wireless Bluetooth freedom and great sound. Plus, when employing Bluetooth wireless technology, the chance of a child getting tangled or caught on the headphones' cable is reduced.
BT2200 features:
-- Unique volume governor system that limits sound output on most portable
devices to 85 dB for parents' peace of mind
-- Puro Limiter cable insures 85 dB sound limit for the auxiliary wired
experience
-- Puro Balanced Response® equally balances bass, mids and highs,
delivering clear, understandable vocal reproduction without excessive
volume
-- Ambient noise limiting by up to 82%* - even in noisy environments like
an airplane, allowing for reasonable listening levels
-- Integrated microphone for seamless use with a phone
-- 18 Hours of Battery Life for Music Playback & 200 Hours Standby
-- Durable, Lightweight Aluminum Construction
-- Supple Protein Leather Ear Cushions and Headband
-- Puro EQ App for iOS (Android coming soon)
-- Folds Flat for Travel
Puro Sound has also developed the Puro Sound Equalizer App, an iOS 16-band EQ application that allows headphones to be customized to the listener's sound and genre preferences. A version of the app for Android devices will be available after the first of the year.
"Using only the very best of science and engineering available, we have mastered the art of methodically replicating big room sound by fine-tuning our audio products with our signature Puro Balanced Response Curve. We are creating products that will lead to a new generation of premium sound entertainment and I am excited about what's to come in 2015," said Jason Wehner, CTO of Puro Sound Labs.

VoLTE Networks: Testing World to Play Key Role in Service Deployment
Latency and heterogeneity of VoLTE technology stokes opportunities for testing and monitoring solutions, finds Frost & Sullivan
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Dec. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- When fully deployed, voice over long term evolution (VoLTE) is expected to be a huge asset to the wireless communications industry. However, during handovers, the technology's heterogeneity is expected to create interference and latency complications. Furthermore, heavy power requirements compel VoLTE providers to partner with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to develop VoLTE-specific phones with longer battery life. These significant roadblocks to deployment are generating abundant opportunities for network testing and monitoring vendors.
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, Global VoLTE Testing and Monitoring Market, finds that the market earned revenues of $524.6 million in 2014 and estimates this to reach $1499.6 million in 2021.
For complimentary access to more information on this research, please click here: http://bit.ly/1vZnVMe.
"The heterogeneous network infrastructure comprising 2G, 3G, 4G and VoLTE deployments will require end-to-end testing solutions that comprise both legacy-based and contemporary network monitoring systems," said Frost & Sullivan Measurement & Instrumentation Research Associate Rohan Joy Thomas.
The VoLTE testing and monitoring market will also get a boost from the deployment of small cells specific to LTE. This infrastructure, termed self optimizing networks (SON), is expected to be more intelligent than current macro cell deployment. Still, it has all the attendant complexities of interference and latency during handovers between small cells or between a small cell and a macro cell.
In addition, these small cells are deployed over a greater area, making it unfeasible to send testing engineers to each base station to ensure uptime. This necessitates remote testing and monitoring solutions that are deployable across such small cells.
Although VoLTE-specific testing and monitoring equipment is highly sophisticated, it comes at a high premium. End users may not perceive any value in purchasing expensive equipment to test and monitor a network that has not yet been fully deployed.
Furthermore, as the market caters to a network built upon various other network deployments, the participants are usually well-established. In a market with huge entry barriers, entrants need to market a unique and differentiated product portfolio.
"Entrenched participants usually acquire smaller participants that have a more differentiated approach to network monitoring," noted Thomas. "Apart from helping provide more comprehensive solutions, these acquisitions also help market participants lower the attrition rate."
While North America leads the market in terms of VoLTE network deployment, the highest penetration rate is in Asia-Pacific. Growth is spearheaded by South Korea, Japan and Singapore, with many others expected to follow suit.
Global VoLTE Testing and Monitoring Market is part of the Test & Measurement Growth Partnership Service program. Trimble Announces Firmware Update for ThingMagic RFID Modules to Simplify Integration into Finished RFID Readers
Update Supports Autonomous Operation
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Dec. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Trimble (NASDAQ: TRMB) announced today an update to its ThingMagic® Micro and Micro-LTE, embedded UHF RFID modules in the ThingMagic Mercury® 6e Series. The firmware update allows for autonomous operation by enabling hardware read triggers and savable configuration settings in the module. It eliminates the need for users to write and run MercuryAPI development code and simplifies the process of building RFID-enabled products.
Customers currently using the Micro and Micro-LTE modules in their existing RFID products need to use ThingMagic's MercuryAPI to write applications to control the module. The MercuryAPI supports Java, .NET and C programming environments. The MercuryAPI Software Development Kit (SDK) contains sample applications and source code to enable developers to get started demonstrating and developing functionality. With the firmware update, users can now save configuration settings such as RF power, duty cycle, read triggers and which antennas to search on, among many others. This allows prospects, who have not previously used ThingMagic modules and written code to the MercuryAPI, to build RFID finished readers more easily.
"With this new firmware update we are continuing our mission to invest in making our products easier to use," said Michael Klein, director of customer support and system engineering for Trimble's ThingMagic Division. "The module is configured one time to stream data using a new Autonomous Configuration Tool and users don't have to write code in order to obtain that functionality. This codeless integration lowers the supporting hardware requirements, allowing the modules to be used in a wider range of products with less development effort."
In addition, the Micro and Micro-LTE can now be configured to start reading and outputting tag data on power up or on change of state of a general purpose input (GPI) line. The new saved settings options can be configured using the MercuryAPI or using the new Autonomous Configuration Tool.
"This new functionality can enable prospects who want to design using RFID modules a way to expand into new markets by getting their readers up and running with minimal configuration," said David Emma, vice president of sales, marketing and engineering for Trimble's ThingMagic Division. "Prospects can now build and operate a complete RFID solution at a lower cost by using less development resources. This makes the update a great option for new customers who want to plug a reader into an existing solution and implement it quickly but couldn't do so previously due to lack of development resources."
The Micro and Micro-LTE with autonomous operation is suited for prospects who have an existing platform that cannot accommodate the use of the MercuryAPI but want to implement an RFID solution. Additionally, this mode of operation results in decreased power consumption because the "read on power up" mode allows the reader to only consume power when it is on. There is no power consumption if the device is off, making it an ideal solution for a battery-operated device such as a handheld reader.
Pricing and Availability
The Micro and Micro-LTE module firmware update is available now. For information on pricing and volume discounts, please contact ThingMagic sales at: sales@thingmagic.com or +1-866-833-4069. International calls +1 617-499-4090. You can learn more about the Autonomous Operation Configuration Tool by viewing our User Guide.

D-Link's Latest Switch Expands Popular EasySmart Gigabit Ethernet Switch Family
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Dec. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- D-Link today announced a new addition to its EasySmart line of affordable Gigabit Ethernet smart switches, the DGS-1100-24P twenty-four port PoE+ switch. Enclosed in a rugged metal housing and easily installable in a standard 19 inch rack, the DGS-1100-24P is a robust, reliable and built-to-last PoE switch suitable for all types of networks.
With Power-over-Ethernet capabilities on the first 12 ports, the DGS-1100-24P simplifies deployments with IP cameras, VoIP phones, wireless access points, and other standards-compliant powered devices. The DGS-1100-24P complies with the IEEE 802.3at PoE+ standard (up to 30W) and has a 100W power budget, which can be allocated across the 12 PoE ports in any manner necessary.
Managed via an intuitive, browser-based Graphical User Interface (GUI), all D-Link(®) EasySmart switches support essential L2 switching features such as a 802.1Q VLAN, QoS, bandwidth limiting, Link Aggregation and IGMP Snooping. The EasySmart management interface also provides administrators with a convenient way to monitor and control PoE functions, including displaying real-time PoE power usage and remotely rebooting IP cameras or access points from anywhere on the network, including over the Internet.
"With 24 Gigabit Ethernet ports, the DGS-1100-24P is a solid switching solution for any business," said Steven Olen, director of product marketing, D-Link Systems, Inc. "It can power up to 12 PoE devices such as IP Cameras, and still has 12 additional Gigabit ports for connections to other devices, such as non-PoE cameras, NVRs, VMS systems, or other network switches."
About the DGS-1100-24P
The DGS-1100-24P is compliant with IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE), consuming less energy by reducing power consumption when traffic volume is low. By deploying EEE devices, users can cut operating costs and even decrease the need for cooling equipment, helping small-and medium-sized businesses stay within their budgets. In addition, the switch features loopback detection and cable diagnostic troubleshooting tools, which help administrators quickly identify network issues so they can be corrected, minimizing downtime.
Additional benefits include:
-- Auto Surveillance VLAN: Ensures real-time video quality for monitoring
and control without compromising the transmission of conventional
network data
-- Bandwidth Control: Network administrators can reserve bandwidth for
important functions that require more bandwidth
-- D-Link Network Assistant Utility: Allows administrators to discover
multiple D-Link Smart Switches within the same L2 network segment,
making initial setup of the Smart Switches quick and easy
-- Limited Lifetime Warranty: The DGS-1100-24P carries a Limited Lifetime
Warranty, furthering D-Link's commitment to product quality and
long-term customer confidence
Availability
The DGS-1100-24P begins shipping in January 2015. It carries a list price of $389.99, and will be available throughout D-Link's vast network of channel partners, including value-added resellers, distributors and online retailers. Detailed specifications are available online at D-Link's website.

inLighten Introduces Whitebox(TM) Line of Audiovisual Components
Digital Signage Leader to Offer Industry-Best Warranty on Professional AV Equipment
CLARENCE, N.Y., Dec. 17, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- inLighten (http://www.inlighten.net), a leading manufacturer in the field of digital signage, self-service and environment audio solutions announced today the introduction of its Whitebox line of commercial-grade audiovisual components.
The Whitebox product line is the result of a multi-year development effort by inLighten, whose digital signage and audio products have been deployed in tens of thousands of locations over the past 25 years. According to CEO, Dan Snyder, "The thousands of installations performed by our audiovisual division have given us unique insight into the differences between high-quality AV components that enable commercial applications to perform consistently at a high level and those that aren't up to the task. All too often, we've come across cases where clients that decided to take on their own installation or use a third party find themselves with splitters, amplifiers, baluns or other under-performing AV components that need to be replaced a year after they were installed."
Snyder continued, "inLighten has built its reputation for excellence, in part, by standing behind its products and making ongoing warranty assurance and dependable support a central part of every client relationship. Nothing is more uncomfortable for us than explaining to a client that the failed part they or their installer used isn't under warranty and that they'll have to pay to have it replaced. In recent years, a growing number of clients have asked us if we planned to provide audiovisual components made to the same exacting standards as our digital media products. As the requests became more frequent, it became clear to us that there was an unmet need for a high-quality line of audiovisual components and equipment backed by superior warranty coverage, service and support. More than two years ago, inLighten made the strategic decision to produce these items, and since that time we've been working intently to deliver a collection of splitters, amplifiers, adaptors, baluns and other components built to operate under the most rigorous conditions of commercial use."
inLighten VP of Operations, Jeff Taylor, who has been involved in the performance testing process for inLighten's componentry initiative, described how Whitebox products will not only set a new standard of excellence for performance, but will also offer the best assurance to clients who use them. "The audiovisual componentry that has been available within the industry, even the best of it, typically provides end-users a 90-day warranty or, on occasion a 1-year warranty. Well, that's about to change. We're so confident of the quality that's been built into these components, we're providing a 2-year warranty on all Whitebox products."
According to inLighten SVP, Doug Braun, "We initially contemplated leveraging Whitebox products as another point of competitive advantage by making them available exclusively to inLighten clients, but upon careful consideration we decided that undersupported A/V parts and equipment shouldn't be the weak link that hinders the continued growth of our industry. We know that when our industry expands there's more opportunity for everyone. That's why we're making Whitebox products available to the providers of all digital signage solutions, as well as installers, integrators and other audiovisual professionals, for use in their applications."
Braun added that Whitebox audiovisual components will be available for purchase beginning in the second quarter of 2015 with an initial offering of 50 core products.
inLighten is an innovator in networked digital media solutions including digital signage, self-service kiosks, on-hold and environment audio services and speech privacy solutions that empower clients to effectively and securely communicate with their audiences. Industry-leading consulting, installation, technical support and creative services deliver a superior customer experience and provide a single point of accountability for all aspects of implementation, day-to-day management and continuing network operation. inLighten's headquarters are in Clarence, NY.
Isabella Products, Inc. Previews Tablet for Children Amidst Recent Findings of 200 Percent Increase in Children's E-book Purchases
Publishing Industry Expert and Teacher Highlight Children's Digital Content Trends to Publishers and Industry Experts at Boston Event
CONCORD, Mass., Dec. 17, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Isabella Products, Inc. this week showcased their anticipated children's tablet to publishers at a pre-launch event in Boston, Mass. The preview comes simultaneously with new industry research on children's increased engagement with digital content and field research on tablet-based learning.
At the private event for publishers at the Boston Public Library on December 15, 2014, expert publishing analyst and industry strategist, Kristen McLean, presented findings from the 2014 Nielsen Children's Book Industry Report that underscored the rapidly growing trend in tablet use and its impact on empowering children to read, learn, and play. The new findings showed:
-- Juvenile e-book purchases are on the rise. In 2011, seven percent of
children's books purchased were electronic compared to 2014, where 21
percent of children's books purchased are e-books. (Source: Nielsen
Books & Consumer USA, 2011-2014)
-- Children are reading e-books at a younger age. Children ages zero to six
now start reading e-books at a mean age of 4.84. Children who are
currently age seven to 12 started reading e-books at a mean age of 7.19.
(Source: Nielsen Children's Deep Dive USA, Fall 2014)
-- Children read longer & have a better vocabulary when incorporating
screen time. Children ages three to five read longer and have a better
vocabulary when incorporating touch-screen technology into their
learning. Further, 24 percent of boys read stories on-screen longer than
they read print books; girls of the same age read 12 percent longer.
(Source: National Literary Trust (UK) & Pearson Education: Children's
early literacy practices at home and in early years settings, 2014)
-- Tablet play rates have skyrocketed. Tablet play rates for children ages
six to 12 were at five percent in 2010, however in 2014, they are at 48
percent. This represents a 960 percent increase in four years. (Source:
Nielsen Entertainment, Annual Games 360 Report, 2014)
McLean said of the industry, "Tablets are clearly where it's at when it comes to kids and digital content. Their portability, accessibility, and visual interface make them the perfect platform to empower and inspire children." She also spoke about the relevance of Fable, noting, "With its durable design, thoughtful content, and multi-media features, I think Fable fills an important need in the marketplace for an affordable, well-designed tablet that inspires children."
Also speaking at the event was Everett, Massachusetts Public School elementary school teacher, Furnell McGrath, who uses Fable tablets in her second grade classroom. McGrath participates in Isabella Products' in-school Fable pilot program. She provided an in-depth look at her experience with Fable tablets - first in a science-based summer school program and now regularly during the reading portion of her curriculum.
McGrath, who uses the tablet not only for reading, but workbook practice, educational games, and more said, "The children know they're doing class work, but they are more engaged and feel privileged when they're working on Fable tablets, versus solely pencil and paper-based activities," she remarked. "Fable is very user-friendly, and can be customized to the different ability levels of my students."
The Fable pilot program continues to expand as the Isabella Products team prepares to announce additional school districts that have signed on to use Fable in school.
"Industry research and feedback from education professionals have been instrumental in the continued development of Fable," said Isabella Products Founder and CEO, Matthew Growney. "Seeing how deeply engaged children are to learn and play using a tablet has strong implications for the publishing industry in developing digital content and for promoting literacy. Our team is further convinced that Fable is a unique and important tool to help manage and focus content in order to meet the needs of children as they develop and grow in school and at home."
A second event with publishing industry speakers and the ability to see Fable pre-launch is expected to take place in New York City in February. For more information, contact Brooks Wallace at brooks@hollywoodpr.net.
Fable will be available for purchase online at VizitMe.com and at select retailers in March 2015.

"New functionality like Amazon's Twitter-enabled Cart and Wish List programs are a great example of where the world of eCommerce is moving," said Norty Cohen, founder and CEO of Moosylvania. "This is a frictionless experience that we believe will become the expectation of shoppers going forward. Social commerce is easy and may at some point make shopping at the mall look a lot like dial-up internet. As marketers, we need to be aware that influencers have a lot of tools at their disposal and this one is ripe for the picking and, perhaps, the ultimate shopping experience."
As part of the Amazon program, every time a consumer sends a message with the hashtag #AmazonCart or #AmazonWishList, the linked product is added to his or her Cart or Wish List, respectively, accelerating the purchasing process. Consumers receiving product tweets in their Twitter timelines have the option to retweet, populate their carts, and purchase items either later or on-the-spot. The ultimate benefit is that consumers do not need to leave their social feed to save a product for later.
Thus far, PostPogo has collected more than 150,000 Amazon-posted items - ranging in price from $1 to $495,000. Everything from Botox injection kits, women's stretch pants and Dr. Seuss's Wacky Book of Opposites to Rolex watches and the famed oil painting, The Dockside Liverpool at Night, were fair game. If all the items mentioned in the tweets were laid side by side, they would stretch the length of 14,070 shopping mall Santas or 1,111 Rockefeller Center Christmas trees. A list of the more unusual and most popular products appears in a real-time tally at http://moosylvania.com/wishlist-watcher/.
Cohen said PostPogo provides a variety of marketing and promotional functions for marketers and their brands.

Broadcom Announces Industry's First 40/50/100GbE PAM-4 Physical Layer Device
Drives 40/50/100GbE over Direct Attach Cable, Optics and Silicon Photonics
IRVINE, Calif., Dec. 17, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM), a global innovation leader in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, today announced the industry's first high speed 4-level Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM-4) Physical Layer transceivers (PHYs). The new PAM-4 PHYs enable transmission rates of 40/50 gigabits per second (Gbps) serially over multiple physical media, including direct attach cables (DAC) and optical fiber. For more news, visit Broadcom's Newsroom.
To support the rapid rise in video and data traffic, there is growing demand for higher speed and more bandwidth over currently deployed infrastructure. As a result, system OEMs are looking at ways to optimize 40/100GbE connectivity. Based on PAM-4 technology, Broadcom's BCM82040 and BCM82004 devices are the first in a line of 40/50/100GbE devices optimized to meet these requirements.
"Our new PAM-4 PHYs provide the ideal solution for OEMs and data center operators looking for cost and performance optimization," said Lorenzo Longo, Broadcom Vice President and General Manager, Physical Layer Products. "This latest addition to our product line-up demonstrates our commitment to pioneering new technology developments such as PAM-4 and further solidifies our position as the industry leader in wired physical layer devices."
The 28 nanometer (nm) BCM82040 and BCM82004 PHYs support higher data throughput over existing low bandwidth channels by transmitting more bits per symbol. PAM-4 enables the transmission of 40 Gbps at a baud rate of 20Gbaud, resulting in improved signal integrity while re-using existing channels for higher data throughput and enabling the use of lower cost cables and optics. The PAM4-line code in the new PHYs require half the bandwidth of Non-Return-to-Zero (NRZ) line code, resulting in higher throughput and lower total system cost and power consumption.
Both devices are designed to transmit and receive 40/50G data over two pairs of media versus eight pairs of media using existing 4x10G quad small form-factor pluggable (QSFP) cables. For 40G optical applications, the BCM82040 reduces the number of optical components and optical fibers required by a factor of four, eliminating expensive components and further reducing cost and power.
Key Features:
-- Single 40/50GbE PHY drives 40/50G serial over various media
-- Supports a variety of DAC reaches from multiple suppliers
-- Enables SMF/MMF optics and silicon photonics
-- Low-power 28 nm CMOS design
-- Small 7x7mm package fits within QSFP+ form factor, cable assembly and
optics modules
Availability
Broadcom's PAM-4 PHYs come in two device options. The BCM82040 is optimized for transmitting 40/50 Gbps over optical fiber and the BCM82004 is optimized for transmitting 40/50 Gbps over direct attach cable (DAC). Both devices are now sampling.

Obsidian announced today that its Longbow(TM) InfiniBand range extenders successfully interfaced HPC traffic with 100Gbits/s optical wavelengths, crossing the Pacific on Tata Communication's TGN-IA subsea cable, spanning in excess of 20,000km.
The supercomputer industry today is faced with the challenge of increasing supercomputer performance nearly 100x to ExaScale by 2020.
-- Opening the door for global innovations: The success of the InfiniCortex
demonstrated the aggregation of many globally distributed supercomputers
into a hive-mind of enormous scale, bringing to light the scalability
and lasting value of InfiniBand.
-- Enabling international collaboration: Partners from many entities
including Japan's Tokyo Institute of Technology (TITECH), Australia's
National Computational Infrastructure (NCI), Oak Ridge National
Laboratory (ORNL), Princeton, Stony Brook and Georgia Institute of
Technology realized measured application transfer rates approaching
theoretical limits, including:
-- NCI- RDMA-based HPC cloud workflows for intercontinental genetic
sequencing
-- TITECH / Georgia Tech- File migration with Lustre and dsync+
-- Princeton Plasma Research Lab / ORNL- Near real-time plasma
disruption detection using ADIOS
-- Stony Brook University / ORNL- Automated microscopy image analysis
for cancer detection, also using ADIOS
-- Obsidian technology re-defines InfiniBand: Longbow provided
hardware-encrypted WAN links for data and system security, resulting in
a highly deployable communications fabric suitable for demanding
applications in not only scientific computing, but also storage,
datacenter, cloud and enterprise environments. The InfiniCortex also
spanned three independently managed InfiniBand subnets, natively bridged
by Crossbow(TM) R400 devices and configured and monitored by its
enhanced subnet manager, BGFC.
Dr. David Southwell, chief visionary officer, Obsidian Strategics, said: "As data usage continues to escalate, organizations from around the world are looking at new network architectures. Because high throughput efficiencies and deterministic traffic flows are notoriously difficult to achieve at high data rates across long-distance circuits, Obsidian's Longbow devices are a critical enabler in the processing of these extremely large data sets. We are thrilled to see the stunning results from this inaugural demonstration and are proud to have been a part of it."
Dr. Marek Michalewicz, senior director for A*Star CRC said: "I am thrilled and happy with the success of our InfiniCortex demo at SC14. It was an undertaking of enormous complexity, involving some thirty different parties, from international data carriers, national research networks, universities' and labs' research groups and thirteen partner and sponsor vendor companies. We are pleased that all seven applications and the entire InfiniBand network worked perfectly! I'm privileged to be working with an excellent group of technical experts who are dedicated and committed - and I wish to thank them all."
About Obsidian Strategics
Obsidian Strategics(TM) is the developer of Longbow(TM) and Crossbow(TM), a series of InfiniBand products featuring range extension, routing and encryption. Longbow technology allows an InfiniBand fabric - normally a short-range network used in supercomputers and data centres - to be securely extended via optical fiber over global distances. Crossbow technology provides very high performance routing of InfiniBand traffic between many separate subnets, enabling unprecedented scalability and manageability. http://www.obsidianstrategics.com.

SHANGHAI, Dec. 17, 2014 /PRNewswire/Â -- Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation ("SMIC"; NYSE: SMI; SEHK: 981), the largest and most advanced pure-play foundry provider inChina, announced today it has begun operations at itsShenzhen 200mm wafer fab. This fab is the first 8-inch production line to be put into operation inSouthern China, and is also the first domestic IC production line to be launched after the 'National Outline of Promoting the Development of IC Industry' was issued this year.
The current growth of mobile communication devices and new applications such as IoT has created a large market demand that existing 8-inch capacity cannot meet. SMIC's investment in theShenzhen fab's equipment and technology addresses this capacity shortage and further ensures that advanced international 8-inch wafer manufacturing requirements are met. According to the plan, by end of this year, the fab will reach an installed capacity of 10,000 wafers per month; by end of 2015 it will reach 20,000 wafers per month, and will continue to expand its capacity to meet the growing demand. The wafer production will mainly be applied to image sensors, logic circuits, power management IC and other consumer and communication electronics.
Shenzhen has China's largest electronic information industry base, drawing on hundreds of IC design houses and ODM/OEMs, and the local industry makes up over 30% ofChina's IC sales revenue. However, the Shenzhen area is still weak in IC manufacturing. The existing IC manufacturing base cannot keep up with the market demand due to a limited number of manufacturing companies in the area and a lack of 8-inch (or larger) wafer manufacturing capabilities. SMIC's new 8-inch fab will help bridge this gap inShenzhen's IC industry supply chain and fill the void for an 8-inch production line and above inSouthern China. Shenzhen's existing abundance of upstream and downstream IC enterprises provides SMIC with a geographic advantage to establish closer links with clients and manufacturers, as well as offer more convenient and efficient services to help customers reduce time to market.
Dr. Tzu-Yin Chiu, SMIC's Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director, attended the commissioning ceremony and said, "Shenzhen is a place of strategic importance forChina's IC industry, as the leader of domestic IC manufacturing enterprises. SMIC's arrival will play an important role in completingShenzhen's semiconductor industry chain. However, ourShenzhen fab will also further strengthen SMIC's capacity and strategic outlook. We look forward to cooperating with local upstream and downstream industry chain enterprises and complement each other's advantages to maximize the benefits available."Â Â Â
